John Veney
The photo caption for the attached called the man "Former Homestead Grays team member John W. Veney." He was a catcher.
Last edited by Cusick; 08-10-2020 at 09:19 AM. Reason: Determined that both John and Jerome Veney were on the Homestead Grays simultaneously. |

Benjamin Landon Banks
Ben Banks is listed in the Negro Baseball Register in THE NEGRO LEAGUES BOOK as a second baseman who played with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1952. The attached photo accompanied an obituary story in January, 2014, which mentioned that Benjamin Landon Banks played for the Philadelphia Stars and Indianapolis Clowns, but was silent about the Monarchs. The article indicated that he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1953, and at one point or another, he was in the farm systems of the Pirates, Braves, and Cardinals. Baseball-reference.com only presents the record of him in the Cardinals' system, and by that time, he was an outfielder. He is shown in the attached photo in the basketball uniform of the Chambersburg (PA) High School Trojans.
Ben Banks, second baseman, was the brother of Ernie Banks, and is a different player. Last edited by Cusick; 06-19-2016 at 10:11 PM. Reason: Clarify that this is a different Ben Banks from the Kansas City Monarchs Ben Banks. |

William R. Bell, Jr.
William R. "Lefty" Bell, Jr. was a pitcher with the Kansas City Monarchs and Birmingham Black Barons during the 1949-54 period. He is shown on the left in street clothes, wearing a Minnesota Twins cap. Bell was drafted by the Twins in MLB's honorary draft in 2008. On the right is an obit photo showing him as a younger man. That photo is from SABR's Negro Leagues Research Committee Newsletter of June, 2021. He died on March 6, 2021 in Des Moines, IA.

Willie Bennett
The Negro Baseball Register in THE NEGRO LEAGUES BOOK, edited by Dick Clark and Larry Lester, indicates that Willie Bennett was a shortstop and outfielder with the Kansas City Monarchs from 1952 to 1955. In Brent Kelley's book, I WILL NEVER FORGET, Negro Leagues player Marvin Jones mentions that a player named Willie Clyde Bennett was with Kansas City. The Negro Baseball Register also lists a second baseman with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1952 named Clyde Bennett, which overlaps with Willie Bennett's stint. I think that Willie Bennett and Clyde Bennett are the same player -- Willie Clyde Bennett.
