I have a full minor league system, though I keep it fairly sparce and am willing to let the rosters get bare and use ghost players if nobody interests me as a prospect with at least one good tool. But on the other end of things, I control all of the lineup decisions for all minor leagues and I handle any promotions, so as guys move up from Rookie to Short Season A or from Short Season A to Low Single A, they become known to me. By the time a player is in High A, he's pretty much locked in my mind in terms of skills and a little bit of background.

I only have three minor league teams below me and try to keep Triple-A and Double-A at 25-players all season long, cutting ones that I've given up on and replacing them with younger minor league free agents. The bottom level I have about 40 guys and keep that number pretty consistent.

Needles to say I originally didn't track all of my prospects, but I do now. I don't have that many to keep track of and it's really cool when you have a guy that you thought had no potential become a big-league starter and surprise you. Like I said, I've had a late round draft pick turn into an ace almost overnight. I drafted him out of high school throwing 89-91 and he now throws 99-101.

I enjoy following all of my prospects because you never know who might turn out to be something. It's rewarding for me and gives me something to do when I'm not browsing my big club.

I think a lot of people overlook how much impact we as GM's have on player development. There are so many little factors that go into it that most people overlook; like how having a lot of guys with 'very high' leadership can aid in the development of others players on his team. If you add up all the little things you can to develop players, you can make a difference.
