Veteran players
Does having veterans on the roster help develop some of the younger players?

I don't think so... If you want to develop young players, hire managers with high "handles rookies" stats and increase your player dev. budget.

Aside from what wishesgrantd just said, I also recommend having a few players who are high in leadership on the team. According to the manual, this helps player development (see below).
But the relative ages of players on the team is not on the list of items that affect player development, according to the manual.

I try to have one or two on the roster at any point, simply for immersion purposes. Even if it doesn't have any tangible effect on the young guys, I like to pretend that it does.
