Talent coordinators
I'd like to assign former ballplayers to be talent coordinators for my organization. Roving "pseudo-coaches" that you assign to work with your minor league affiliates to help build specific skills, improve developmental learning, and reinforce the organization's goals.
They work independently of your scout, and provide a 2nd opinion about how well a player is developing. They set timetables for improvements and hold the minor league's manager and coaches accountable for bringing up the level of play.
Obviously, I think we should be able to select which former players from our organization, or others for that matter, should fill the roles. It's important that the coordinator position be designed so that the information we receive from them isn't just copied from the scouting reports we receive now. It should be based on our expectations of improvement.
For example: If I set a goal for a select number of players in A ball, to improve their fielding percentages over the course of a season, my coordinator's job is to visit the team, stay with them for a while, return later on to see how things are going, and report back to me. If I see some players improving and meeting my expectations, I now have a more thorough understanding of the rate of development.
Right now, we see ratings rise or fall, and we can look at numbers and decipher them for ourselves. But I think we should be able to introduce a performance threshold into the game that tracks expectations beyond ratings and stats.
