2014 Player Ratings
Hello all,
Ive been really getting into OOTP recently. Obviously there was a lot of time put into the creating of the MLB rosters. I would like the community to help me out with something, though. Anyone responding is appreciated. What players have you found, with the real-life season 50% completed, to be over/under rated at this point? I'm not asking so that the rosters be changed with a patch....but simply so that I can personally edit some players on my own. I can't keep up with every single team and every single player....so I'm asking some of you to help point out players you may be more familiar with who may have been over/under rated by Baseball Prospectus (and therefore underrated in OOTP). I'm looking for any suggestions that people implement themselves. Even down to fielding/position ratings. Thanks for anyone who offers some of the own thoughts and opinions! |

What level of performance (better or worse) over 60% of a season by a real life player would objectively qualify as proving a player is improperly rated? What happens if that same RL player flip flops his performance over the last 40% of this season? I believe that there are statistical measurements that may indicate the significance of a variable performance. I'd be suspicious if a part season was deemed sufficient to prove that say a 5-8 year veteran is improperly rated vs his career averages. Baseball reality is that short term-inconsistency of results is the norm. There are so many non-ratings based reasons that could cause a player to have a better or worse season. New team new park new league new division. Better/worse team, better/worse batting lineup, better worse place in the order ie batting 3rd vs 7th. Strength of schedule, opposing pitching, day to day injuries (some can last all season; ask Melky Cabrera 2013). Last but not least getting older (better) and getting older (worse) I'm not suggesting that player ratings are perfect. I'm interested in a technically correct way of calculating it given the mountain of variables in play.

I wouldn't go changing player's ratings too drastically. In the end the players end up pretty much where they do in real life. Plus, it's impossible to replicate the real 2014 MLB season to some degree. OOTP does a very, very good job of coming close.
The only thing I change or add is positions for players in real life that end up playing significant amounts of time at a position that isn't reflected in OOTP. Red Sox player Mookie Betts is one that I know needs OF ratings added. He's played exclusively in the OF this season for the Sox, but OOTP only has his IF ratings that he played in the minors. Same thing for Brock Holt of the Red Sox. |

Back-up catcher Jose Molina never plays SS for the Rays. Can you give him a negative rating so that the AI won't use him there after a late-inning PH-job?

If someone has a better candidate than Wade Davis based upon the first 100 games this year, I will be stunned.
