Hey, no nicknames! (None, not merely hidden)

I'm not talking about the new option to hide them. I erased all of the nicknames in nick_names.txt and re-imported the name and ethnicity database. This new draft pool of 256 players - no nicknames!

Now I can assign the nicknames that I want, based on my own warped sense of humor, and not have to edit out the default nonsense (or hide all nicknames, using that new option). Do you think this is working now?

You will start getting duplicate nicknames.

Aaargh, you're right about that one, Wolf. The nicknames I did see were duplicates of the ones I created "last year" (I thought they were the same players who were returning to the draft but no, they're new players who are bizarrely linked up with nicknames that have nothing to do with the bits of whimsy that I had put together for the last draft class). Let me advance a year in the next few days and see what the next draft looks like.

And turn off league evolution while you're at it.

For one thing, in my semi-historical MLB league (historical league, fictional players), I must have it on to accomplish what I want to do. However, being only in 1914 so far, I don't know if it will work according to history.

This is what I like doing, so I am reluctant to give up nicknames altogether. Does anybody appreciate this subtlety? Sublime, is it not?

Not sure what's going on there Bru - I do the same as you except I never re-import the names db. I have always emptied the nicknames file so it's blank, then just use my own nicknames while playing.

Not sure what the duplicate thing is about. If you're the only one assigning nicknames, how are they duplicating?

If you have user created nicknames for players, the game will duplicate those nicknames, sometimes repeatedly, and assign them new players. I discovered this after cleaning the nicknames out of a fictional league, emptying nicknames.txt, assigning some nicknames of my own to players, and then creating a bunch of players. Some of the created players had duplicate nicknames of the ones I had assigned.

The best thing to do about nicknames is to just turn them off.

The same ghing happens with names. Give somebody a new, never before seen, name in your game, and I gurantee it will come up again sooner or later.

Wolf handles your second question, whose answer I confirm:

As for your first "question" (or statement), BN, I think the common consensus with nicknames is, if you clean out nick_names.txt PRIOR to creating a new league, you will have none in your game. However, once the league is created with the original file in place, those nicknames are imported into, I guess, players.dat and stay there.

That is until recently, I hope. What I thought I saw for my last draft class, after I had erased nick_names.txt and reimported the names database, is no nicknames (but then I saw repetition of my "invented" nicknames which I had overlooked as they appeared familiar to me but actually were "prior" custom nicknames that had been applied to new players in a highly bizarre fashion).

Now I'm not sure what I saw, so I am waiting for my next draft class to see if any of the default nicknames still appear. I just finished my season and am about to start ST so I should be able to report back soon.

Ok, that's probably what I'm doing different. I always empty the nickname file immediately upon install or any patch update, before creating any leagues. I manually assign a nickname here and there, very rare, and there's no duplicates.

I've been doing that for quite some time now, probably several versions back.

That's because any new name/nickname entered in the game is automatically added to the names/nicknames file the game uses to create names. So if you've deleted all nicknames, then all that's left in the nicknames file will be whatever few nicknames you've added, thus they'll repeat pretty often.

Didn't see this before my response above. That's interesting.

I wonder why you don't get the duplicates. Based on Markus' explanation to me as to the workings of the names files, I'd think you would get duplicates no matter when you deleted the nicknames if you later added any nicknames manually.

Dumb question on names/nick names

I'm using questdogs name files with blank nick names. Since installing the game has been patched. Do I need to reinstall those?
