R.I.P. Tom Veryzer. who passed away this week at the far too young age of 61. He is pictured on the previous page in Section 21799.

Okay, TN - I'll take your word for it. You have to admit, however, that these two Tulsa teammates bear an eerie resemblance to one another.

Search continues on Don Bryant

Just circling back to see if anyone might have unearthed a color image of Don Bryant as a Astro from 1969 or 1970...

I appreciate the colorization efforts of Krantzbucks, however if someone has an actual 'standard' color photo that would be great! Thanks!

Is it possible that Don Bryant wore a Seattle Pilots uniform? Ever?

Don Bryant did, indeed, wear a Pilots uniform in the spring of 1970. We not only know this because of his presence on the roster that spring--before the team became the Milwaukee Brewers--but because a Pilots' uniform of Don's was authenticated and auctioned several years back. And, whether or not he ever wore it, we know that a Brewers uniform was created for him. Of course, Don was returned to Houston on April 3, at the end of spring training.

Forget whether pictures of Don in Astro or Pilots gear exists--it seems impossible that there aren't at least a few in the Topps Vault--there are precious few color pictures of Don at any point in his long career. It's really odd how few pictures of him are in circulation.

For Houston hunters, I would point out that the picture of Don used for his 1970 Topps card is almost certainly an airbrushed picture of Don with Houston. Give the man back his star and be done with it.

Appreciate the follow up. Yes, this is the photo that I have that I was hoping for an upgrade on. To your point, it would seem like the folks over at Topps Vault would have this same pic in his original Houston garb....Looks like I'll still be on the hunt.....

Topps Vault

This reminds me of a question that I was looking to ask this forum. Have any of you dealt with the folks at Topps Vault in the past, and if so how has it gone?

The question behind the question would be: Are they open/willing/receptive to fielding requests for bygone players where it would seem that they might have something to offer from their archives? I've had some communication with them in the past and was not sure if I was 'crossing a line' by inquiring about the availability of certain players/images.

Just thought I would ask this group.....thanks in advance!

The Topps Vault

A refresher from somebody who saw the original Topps photo archives from years ago. They filled tens of thousands of envelopes (one per player per shoot) in thousands of hanging folders in a couple of dozen filing cabinets. The organizing was incomplete - only about half the players after "T" in the alphabet had no files. There were also boxes and boxes of unfiled, in searched envelopes.

There had to be at least a million images.

All of this was boxed and moved out of the Topps offices a decade ago and turned over to a satellite office for sale on eBay. The likelihood they could find a given player or shoot ("take requests") is almost zero. On the other hand, at the rate they sell them off they will continue to be doing this for hundreds of years.

BTW about the Don Bryant images. Somewhere there is a copy of his photo on his 1969 Topps rookie card (below) and that 1970 blacked out cap? That's a weak example of a remarkable fact. The Topps graphic artists actually worked ON the negative. So if you blanch at some of those distorted 1975 painted-on Astros cap logos? Those were done on a 2-1/2" by 3-1/2" negative with an airbrush.

I would take a full/larger/clearer pic of just him in his 1969 card in a heartbeat....

Ugh....Thanks for the sliver of hope anyways Merkle....!

Hello again...This is Ian...Jesse Jefferson's son....I'm looking for images of a teammate of my fathers. His son and I played ball on the same high school team. Looking for images of Catcher Harry Saferight. Real nice guy and his family and my family are real close. His son doesn't have too many photos and I wanted to surprise him and see what may be available. Harry caught my father and we all live near each other. Thanks again...Played for the Braves and Pirates.

Here are a few: 1976 Shreveport Captains, 1978 Columbus Clippers, 1979 Portland Beavers and ca. 1979 Pirates.

Don Bryant

From the '69 Topps card. Two versions of it screened, trimmed, otherwise untouched; two versions with some minimal improvements.
