An epic World Cup, with many of the young fighters upsetting the apple carts of the veterans in some amazing action. In the end it came down to the brightest of the young guns against the sentimental favorite for all the marbles. Would the old warhorse have one last stick of dynamite left in that right hand and finally break the curse?

1895 is underway and the Broughton group is the group of death this year, though both Fitz and Dempsey are in the twilight of their careers, with Fitzsimmons already announcing this will be his last year as an active fighter.

The final round of qualifying is complete and as expected Bob Fitzsimmons announced his retirement and will not appear in the World Cup, leaving the door open of Pat Killen, who gets in despite the loss.

Final Rankings for 1895 heading into the world cup. Rumors abound that Jack NP Dempsey may retire after the World Cup, which would open another promotion spot. Pancho Galeria was a career local circuit fighter, who just missed making the World Cup qualifying pools in 1893, but then went on to go 0-8-1 in his final 9 fights.

Whoever the victor, we would have our first two-time champion and with his countrymen cheering him on, Jackson dropped Ryan in the 1st rd.Ryan rallied despite a swelling right eye and closed the gap by round 8, but from there Jackson's power was the decider as he dropped Ryan twice in the 14th and again in the 15th - 144-137, 145-136, 145-137

Round 1 of qualifying complete for the 1896 quest for the cup and the retirements of Fitzsimmons and Dempsey have left the void that the newly promoted fighters do not seem capable of filling. Fans around the world are hoping the highly touted youngsters Jack Johnson and Tom Sharkey will earn promotion from the local circuit next year as the current stars are growing long in the tooth.

One qualifying round left for the 1896 World Cup and a big outing from Jack Bonner, who drew Tommy Ryan again this round and gained a measure of revenge holding the former WC Champ to a draw. A shocker in the Figg group as Joe Goddard caught Joe Choynski in the 1st round and is now in a position to qualify.

He could be in position next year, there will be at least 5 retirements from this years qualifying pool, so depending on his group draw and who comes up from the local circuit he could be in a good position.

Right now the only world class fighter sure to come up from the local circuit is Jack Johnson, who only needs 2 fights to meet the 10 fight minimum for ranking. Tom Sharkey is another, but his career has been moving at a snails pace and he still needs to have 4 fights when I run the local circuit for 1896.

Regardless, Armstrong will be in the thick of it as the fighters who have been around since 1888 start to age out.

Final rankings for 1896 and some new blood making their first World Cup appearance in Jack Bonner, Charles Goff and Joe Goddard, with Corbett, Jim Hall and Pat Killen on the outside looking in. A busy Tom Sharkey (6 fights in 1896) is finally set to debut in the qualifiers, while Jack Johnson, inexplicably took the year off to Barnstorm and will now debut no earlier than 1898, if he returns to the ring. We also say goodbye to a couple of World Cup regulars, including former Champion Hank Griffin.

George Cole and Young Peter Jackson see their first foray into the World Cup qualifying sections turn bad, while Tom Sharkey comes out smoking and could be one of the favorites to qualify out of the Cribb group along with 'Kid' McCoy. Jack Fallon has a tendency to be involved on close fights as he opens 1897 qualifying with his 6th career draw.
