Wednesday, June 27, 1877, at Philadelphia Centennials (11-16 tied for 4th place in the Liberty League)

We swept Philadelphia at our place last time we met. They have lost 4 of their last 5 games.

2B Horace Hays makes his 1877 debut with Philadelphia. He was injured in Spring Training. He batted .294 last season.

CF Bobby Hubbard is back and CF Yale Molloy was sent back to Rochester, even though his batting average is quite a bit better than Hubbard's (.267 to .194).

Abe Everette, Troy (28 L 13-4 1.59) vs. Charlie Moss, Phil. (36 R 11-14 2.14)

Lost - 4 to 3

After 6 innings we were up 3 to 0 and I thought we might be witnessing the first back-to-back shutouts in history. But things turned sour, beginning in the 7th. In a foreshadowing moment, the Centennials scored their first run with the help of 2 errors by Bobby Hubbard in center.

In the 8th they added another run to make the score 3 to 2.

In the bottom of the 9th, PH Ollie Kline led off with a single and 3B Jim Ware bunted him over to second. SS Jimmy Mark then singled with his second hit of the game, but LF John Hagadorn got to the ball quickly and Kline had to stop at third. With 1 out and runners on the corners, LF Dan Mitchell then hit a ground single up the middle, scoring Kline to tie the game. Jimmy Mark decided to risk a try for third base from first and Bobby Hubbard let go of a throw that maybe was meant to head toward third base, but was delivered to a different zip code and Mark scored the winning run. 3 errors in the game for Hubbard. We'll chalk it up to rust. He did throw another runner out at third and made a great leaping catch earlier in the game. He also had a hit and scored a run.

3b Wash Horsfall had 3 hits with a double and scored a run, but also made 2 errors. C Eb Burke had 2 hits and 2 RBIs and threw out a fellow trying to steal a base. Let me go on record saying that Eb Burke has saved our season here in Troy. When Jumbo Tilford went down in Spring Training, I thought we were going to have a hole the size of the Grand Canyon back behind the plate, but Burke has filled it and then some. He's hit a lot better than expected: .271 with 10 runs scored and 15 RBIs. We knew his defense was pretty good, but he has even been better than we thought there, too, especially at thwarting the other team's base running game. 10 players have managed to steal a base off Burke, but 17 have gone back to the dugout disappointed. That's an incredible 63% caught stealing rate.

Other Games:
St. Louis (5) at Pittsburgh (7) - Bones Lane (10-15) over Socks Hawkins (4-2). Lane held the mighty St. Louis bats to only 6 hits. He picked up 2 with his bat, scored a run and had an RBI. St. Louis scored 5 times in the first 3 innings off Lane, but then he got stingy and shut them out without allowing a hit over the final 6 innings. SS Marvin Frank hit a home run for St. Louis.

Boston (2) at Washington (4) - Rufus Lee (3-3) over Charlie Morlock (10-10). Lee had 2 hits. 2b Calvin Biron had 3 hits with a double and scored a run.

Saturday, June 30, 1877, at Philadelphia Centennials (12-16 tied for 4th place in the Liberty League)

Abe Everette, Troy (28 L 13-5 1.62) vs. Charlie Moss, Phil. (36 R 12-14 2.06)

Lost - 2 to 0

Everette only allowed 3 hits, but 1 was a home run to LF Dan Mitchell.

We only got 4 hits: 2 by me and 2 by Dave Taylor, who was giving LF Jim Hagadorn a day off in left. I have decided to put him in right full-time for a while and see how he does. RF Bill Hammack is horrible on defense and has also quit hitting of late.

Charlie Moss tied Everette with his 2nd shutout of the season. They are the only two pitchers with any.

Other Games:
St. Louis (2) at Pittsburgh (4) - Bones Lane (11-15) over Socks Hawkins (4-3). Each team had 12 hits, but Pittsburgh only made 1 error to 6 for St. Louis. C Jake Houghton had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Boston (3) at Washington (11) - Rufus Lee (4-3) over Charlie Morlock (10-11). Boston lost their 5th in a row. 2B Calvin Biron had 3 hits, scored 4 runs and had an RBI and 2 errors. CF John Rodgers had 3 hits and 3 RBIs and 2 errors. 1B Lou Knight had 4 hits with a double, scored twice and made an error. 3B Sandy Perkes came up with a sore shoulder for Boston and is expected to miss about 3 weeks.

Down in the International League, John Bendickson pitched a 4-hit shutout for Rochester, striking out 7. He has allowed only 1 run in his past 2 starts and struck out 11. I think it's time to bring him back and see if he is back to 100%. I know Abe Everette has been excellent in Bendickson's absence, but John is our franchise pitcher and when he was right, he was much better than Everette can ever hope to be. If there's a chance he can get back to his former glory, I am going to give him every opportunity to do it.

I must say, very nice work!

I have two questions for you:

1) How do you get the sortable season stats for all the players in the league (like you did above)?

and

2) How do you have players also be managers?

Thanks!

Wednesday, July 4, 1877, at Philadelphia Centennials (13-16 tied for 4th place in the Liberty League)

The return of John Bendickson! At least for one game and then we'll see where we go. Billy Jenkins was sent to Rochester to lead them to the I.A. championship. I'm taking the day off so I can concentrate on Bendickson and evaluate his stuff.

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 3-5 2.52) vs. Charlie Moss, Phil. (36 R 13-14 1.99)

Won- 14 to 5

The first inning did not go well, Philadelphia smashed 4 hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple. 3 runs.

After that, though, he settled down and only gave up 2 more runs in the 8th when a couple of errors didn't help. I think he earned another start. Our next series is 3 games at St. Louis, our biggest rival for the Pennant and the hardest hitting team in the League. They tattooed Abe Everette last time we played, scoring 19 runs in the 3 games. We'll see if Bendickson can do better.

Another thing about Bendickson is he can hit. He had 2 hits with a double in the game and scored a run.

We had 17 hits as a team and scored in double digits for the first time all season.

Wash Horsfall had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Crazy Kelley had 3 hits with a double and scored twice. The nicest thing to see was CF Bobby Hubbard knock out 3 hits, including a bases-loaded triple in the 5th to give us the lead and bust the floodgates open.

Other Games:
St. Louis (2) at Pittsburgh (1) - Socks Hawkins (5-3) over Bones Lane (11-16). Pittsburgh out-hit St. Louis 10 to 9, but St. Louis did not make an error and Pittsburgh had 3. Hawkins had a shutout going until Pittsburgh scored with 2 outs in the 9th. 26-year-old rookie Rube Ford made his Liberty League debut for St. Louis. He had 3 hits with a 2-run triple in his first at bat in the first inning that accounted for all the scoring.

Boston (4) at Washington (1) - Charlie Morlock (11-11) over Rufus Lee (4-4). Morlock held Washington to 6 hits, but isn't somebody always holding Washington to 6 hits? Morlock had 2 hits, scored a run and knocked one in. C Kip Kraft had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. Rufus Lee held Boston to 8 hits.

Down in the New York State Championship Association, 28-year-old 1B Shadow Kielbasa of the Auburnians extended his hitting streak to 25 games. He is batting .415 on the season to lead the League.

1) Open a report in the browser, copy and paste into a spreadsheet and then do a little manipulation and then use GIMP to make it pretty.

2) All managers and owners are maintained outside of OOTP. I have my own house rules set up for hiring and firing.

There is a drop down menu above the list with a little inverted chevron next to it call "Split". Click on it and choose "Overall" for this season's stats. There is another menu labeled "Scope" that lets you pick the league to display.

Saturday, July 7, 1877, at St. Louis Brown Stockings (19-11 tied for 1st place in the Liberty League)

This game is for sole possession of 1st place. A sweep by either team in this series may prove decisive. So far, the 2 teams are 3-3 against each other, with St. Louis taking 2 of 3 at their place and Troy taking 2 of 3 at Putnam Grounds.

This is the first time the Haymakers have faced Socks Hawkins this year. We were 3-0 against him last season, but he pitched well in all 3 games.

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 4-5 2.71) vs. Socks Hawkins, St.L. (26 R 5-3 1.84)

Won - 9 to 4

If not for the rookie 3B Rube Ford, Bendickson would have had a fantastic outing. As it was, I am very pleased to hold the Brown Stockings to 4 runs. Rube Ford, who went 3 for 4 with a triple in his Liberty League debut in his last game, went 3 for 5 in his second game with a home run and 3 RBIs. Foster was the 3rd player picked in last December's B League draft, right after Washington picked 34-year-old C Bernie Robinson, who as defending League MVP Al Cannon's backup for the Olympics has yet to appear in a game.

We made 3 errors, all of them by LF John Hagadorn. He had a horrible game. He did not catch anything at all.

I had 3 hits, scored a run and knocked in 2. C Eb Burke continued to amaze me with 3 hits, including a double. He scored twice and had an RBI and threw out the only player who tried to steal on him.

Other Games:
Pittsburgh (7) at Boston (8) - Charlie Morlock (12-11) over Bones Lane (11-17). Pittsburgh scored a run in the 9th, but with 2 outs and the tying run at second, C Jake Houghton popped out to 2B Jack Warren. Warren, making his first start for Boston after spending the first half of the year in Lynn, hit 2 triples, stole a base, scored a run and knocked in 2. He also made 2 errors. 1B George Zech had 3 hits and scored a run.

Philadelphia (13) at Washington (3) - Charlie Moss (14-15) over Rufus Lee (4-5). 3B Jim Ware had 2 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Lou Landaal had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. CF John Froom had 3 hits, stole a base, scored twice and knocked in 2. Philadelphia stole 7 bases without getting caught against Gold Glove C Al Cannon.

Well, we shouldn't have highlighted Shadow Kielbasa. As soon as we mentioned his hitting streak it was over. Sam Doty of Buffalo held him hitless in 4 at bats, though Auburn still won the game, 4 to 2.

Monday, July 9, 1877, at St. Louis Brown Stockings (19-12 2nd place in the Liberty League)

Abe Everette, Troy (28 L 13-6 1.65) vs. Roger Lake, St.L. (30 R 1-0 0.00)

Won - 12 to 7

St. Louis pounded Everette for 14 hits. But he did hold rookie 3B Rube Ford to the worst day of his 3 game career: Ford had 2 hits to give him 8 in his first 3 outings as a Liberty Leaguer.

I had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 4 runs. Also had an RBI and an error. Sol Popko had 2 hits with a double, scored twice and knocked in 3.

John Hagadorn has gone cold as ice again, with only 2 hits in his last 6 games. His batting average has dropped over 100 points in the past month. He'll be getting some bench time.

Other Games:
Pittsburgh (8) at Boston (7) - George Dennis (3-1) over John Callaham (5-4). Callaham has now allowed 38 hits in his last 2 starts. LF Silver Borresen had 4 hits, scored a run and had an RBI and was caught stealing. 1B Ed Parton had 3 hits, scored twice and had an RBI. RF Arther Purfield had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and knocked one in. Callaham stunk it up in the pitcher's box, but excelled in the batter's box, knocking 4 hits, scoring twice and driving one home for Boston.

Philadelphia (5) at Washington (8) - Dick Wheeler (2-4) over Charlie Moss (14-16). Washington scored 6 times in the first. Moss settled down after that, but it was too late. C Al Cannon had 2 hits, scored twice and knocked in a run. CF George Kennedy broke his finger and is supposed to be out for about 5 weeks.

Down in the International Association, Rochester lost to the Guelph Maple Leafs, 7 to 6 in 15 innings. Egyptian Hooker picked up the win with 7 innings of 1-hit relief. Hooker is pitching exclusively in relief for Guelph. He is now 3-0 and has not allowed an earned run on the season yet in 26.2 innings. He has allowed 19 runs, overall, though (Guelph makes a LOT of errors).

Thursday, July 12, 1877, at St. Louis Brown Stockings (19-13 2nd place in the Liberty League)

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 5-5 2.63) vs. Socks Hawkins, St.L. (26 R 5-4 1.77)

Won - 6 to 4

Sweep! On the Road! Bendickson again started a little slow, allowing 8 hits and 4 runs in the first 3 innings. But then he shut them out over the final 6 innings, and did not give them a hit after rookie Rube Ford led off the 4th with a single. That was Ford's only hit of the day for the curious. His Liberty League career batting average dropped to an even .500.

Wash Horsfall had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Yours truly had 3 hits with a triple, scored twice and had an RBI. That's my third straight 3-hit game for those counting. I can't complain about the performance of our second baseman when he had 9 hits in the biggest 3-game series of the year!

Other Games:

Pittsburgh (2) at Boston (1) - Bones Lane (12-17) over Charlie Morlock (12-12). Boston out-hit Pittsburgh, 9 to 3. Boston only made 4 errors and Pittsburgh had 3. Pittsburgh scored their only 2 runs in the 5th inning when a single and 2 errors loaded the bases with 2 outs for CF Willie Schommer, who singled home a pair. He had 2 of Pittsburgh's 3 hits. Rookie 3B Sam Clark had the other and scored one of the runs. Boston could not score, though, until the 9th inning. With 1 out, LF Dan Sloan reached on an error and then 1B George Zech tripled him home. But the next two batters grounded out to the pitcher to end the game. Zech matched the Alleghenys hit output himself with 3.

Philadelphia (9) at Washington (10) in 10 innings - Dick Wheeler (3-4) in relief of Rufus Lee over Charlie Moss (14-17). Wheeler pitched 3 shutout innings for the win. CF Barry Kemp had 2 hits, including a 2-out single in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. He scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 2B Calvin Biron strained a back muscle and will miss about 5 weeks. His replacement, Ed Sumerlin singled in the winning run in the 10th. CF John Froom of Philadelphia strained a muscle in his ribs and will miss 3-4 weeks, they say.

Saturday, July 14, 1877, vs. Pittsburgh Alleghenys (15-18 4th place in the Liberty League)

Bones Lane, Pitts. (34 L 12-17 2.93) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 6-5 2.67)

Lost - 5 to 4 in 10 innings

We were up, 4 to 2, going into the 9th, cruising along and then somebody accidentally flipped the rally switch and we started playing like chickens with our heads cut off. 2 errors in the inning, both by guys I put in especially for their defense, and Pittsburgh tied the game. Actually, we tied the game up, they were just the beneficiaries.

CF Willie Schommer had 3 hits for them and scored 3 runs, including the game winner. C Jake Houghton had 2 hits, including a 2-out double in the bottom of the 11th to win it.

I had another 3-hit game, but there is no joy in it. CF Bobby Hubbard, who normally as some trouble against the lefty Lane, had 4 hits, but did not score or drive in a run. We scored 3 runs in the 3rd to go up 4 to 0 and then turned in our bats for the day.

Other Games:

Boston (9) at Philadelphia (6) - Charlie Morlock (13-12) over Charlie Moss (14-18). 2B Bill Thompson had 3 hits, stole a base, scored twice and knocked in 2. 3B Billy Little had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.

Washington (5) at St. Louis (9) - Socks Hawkins (6-5) over Rufus Lee (4-6). CF Washington Macho had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. RF Ed Radle had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored twice and knocked in a run. 27-year-old rookie 1B John Hiscock had 3 hits, scored twice and had 2 RBIs.

How do you set up the schedule so that there is at least one off day between games?

Thanks!

Tuesday, July 17, 1877, vs. Pittsburgh Alleghenys (16-18 4th place in the Liberty League)

Bones Lane, Pitts. (34 L 13-17 2.92) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 6-6 2.65)

Lost - 7 to 2

I took the day off and probably jinxed us. We'll leave it at that, but I ain't taking no more days off if I can help it. Hubbard, Popko and Horsfall each had 2 hits, I had a pinch hit and Ed Morgan had a hit and that was it. Pittsburgh whacked Bendickson around hard all game for 14 hits. He can't blame the defense for this one. LF Silver Borresen had 3 hits, stole a base, scored a run and drove one in.

Bendickson had better pitch a good one next time or he'll be back in Rochester.

Other Games:
Boston (3) at Philadelphia (4) - Charlie Moss (15-18) over Charlie Morlock (13-13). Moss held Boston to 7 hits. Pitchers are striking hitters out a lot more this season. Charlie Morlock led the Liberty League with 72 of them in 1876. Charlie Moss struck out 2 today to give him 73 on the season. We still have 25 games to play in a season 10 games shorter than last year. 2B John Kron had 3 hits with a double and a triple, walked once, scored twice and had an RBI.

Washington (6) at St. Louis (10) - Socks Hawkins (7-5) over Rufus Lee (4-7). CF Washington Macho had 4 hits with 2 triples, stole a base, scored 3 runs, had an RBI and made only his 2nd error in 13 games. RF Ed Radle had 3 hits, stole a base, scored twice and knocked in a run. Rookie 3B Rube Ford had 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

Have to do that one by hand. You can open the schedules in a text editor.

If you have a league who's schedule should match what the Liberty League has played, I can send you mine.

Yes! Please send it.

I'm sending a PM with the reason as to why, as I don't think I should post it here, being a Dynasty thread and all...

Here are the schedules the Liberty League is using in the early going:

1876 Liberty.lsdl
1877 Liberty.lsdl
1879 Liberty.lsdl

Note 1878 uses the same as 1877.

Saturday, July 21, 1877, vs. Pittsburgh Alleghenys (17-18 4th place in the Liberty League)

Lose this game and the whole sweep of St. Louis was pretty much for naught. Bendickson's butt is on the line for this game.

OF Ed Morgan, who I picked up in the B League Draft in December and who I had started playing in right of late has sprained his ankle in an off-field incident that I think he's lying about. He says he was just walking along the sidewalk in town. Anyway, he's out for about 3 weeks, so I brought CF Yale Molloy back from Rochester for reserve duty. Neither John Hagadorn nor Bill Hammack are hitting a lick of late, so I am going to give Wash Horsfall a trial in right. Dave Taylor will play in left against righthanders until he quits hitting. He's hitting .408 in 49 AB, but hit under .200 last year. Hammack or Hagadorn will play against lefties, depending on which one has angered me less at the time.

Bones Lane, Pitts. (34 L 14-17 2.85) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 6-7 2.76)

Won - 8 to 0

4 hit shutout for Bendy! Hope this means he's finally back to 100%.

We had 15 hits and Pittsburgh made 10 errors and we would have scored more runs but we had 3 runners thrown out by outfielders.

RF Wash Horsfall had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. Only one ball was hit anywhere near him in the game and he made an awesome catch on it. 1B Sol Popko had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. LF Bill Hammack had 4 hits, scored twice and made 4 catches in left without dropping any. CF Bobby Hubbard had 2 more hits and scored twice. He is hotter than gravy grease. He has a 7 game hitting streak with 15 hits during the run. He brought his average up from under .200 to .269 quicker than you can blink. C Eb Burke continued to defy the experts with a pair of hits, scoring a run and knocking one in.

We're heading to Boston next where those Red Caps can really swat the horsehide, so I hope Bendickson is up to the task.

Other Games:
Boston (5) at Philadelphia (6) - Charlie Moss (16-18) over Charlie Morlock (13-14). Moss held Boston to 6 hits. Morlock held Philadelphia to 8. 2B John Kron singled with one out in the bottom of the 9th to win it. Charlie Moss had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. LF Jim Leonardi had 2 hits with a double and scored the winning run. CF Deacon Wilson had 2 hits with a double, scored twice and knocked in 2.

Washington (7) at St. Louis (10) - Socks Hawkins (8-5) over Rufus Lee (4-8). 1B Pete Bucolo had 3 hits with a double, scored twice and knocked in a run. Rookie sensation Rube Ford had 3 more hits with a double, stole his first base, scored twice and knocked in 3. Washington's rookie LF Dummy Smith had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 4 RBIs.

Monday, July 23, 1877, at Boston Red Caps (18-18 3rd place in the Liberty League)

We are 2-4 against Boston so far this season. Their abuse of John Bendickson in an 11 to 3 loss where he only lasted 2.2 innings was the catalyst for him being demoted to Rochester. He just wasn't fully healed from his shoulder injury from the year before. But I think, at least I hope, that he is back to 100% and ready to deal with the big bats the Red Caps have in their lineup.

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 7-7 2.55) vs. Charlie Morlock, Bos. (28 R 13-14 3.15)

Won - 4 to 3

Boston did not get their first hit until there was one out in the 5th. But then they got their 2nd and 3rd in the same inning and went up 1-0, because we only had 2 hits through 5 against Charlie Morlock. We ended up with only 6, but one of the was a clutch 2-out 2-run single by Dave Taylor in the 6th that put us up, 2 to 1. Taylor also knocked in our 3rd run in the 8th and we added a fourth to go up 4 to 1. Meanwhile, Bendickson was cruising.

You know one of the things that gets my goat more than anything? When you are playing in the field and have a runner at third base and nobody out and you get up on your toes and do everything you can to keep him from scoring and then you get an out and manage to hold him where he is and then you get another out and he's still there at third and then you relax a little because you don't have to worry about him anymore, all you have to do is get the batter out and then the batter hits a 2-out poke to score the run. I HATE that.

In the 9th inning, the first two hitters singled off Bendy and after a long flyout the runner at second went over to third. 1 out. Up on my toes. The next guy pops out to short. 2 outs. Relax. And then Sandy Perkes drills one into deep right for a triple and suddenly we are only up a run with the tying run 90 feet from scoring. 1B George Zech drilled one hard on the ground towards first and Cupid Doyle scooped it and stepped on the bag to end the game.

A win! But it still soured my apples that Perkes tripled and ruined the pretty line Bendickson was going to have in the scorebook.

As I said, we only got 6 hits, 2 of them by 1b Sol Popko. He and SS Bill Rush scored all of our runs, each crossing the plate twice.

Bendickson gave Boston 8 hits in the end. And here's something you don't see every day: all 3 runs he allowed were earned. We only made 2 errors.

Other Games:
Washington (3) at Pittsburgh (4) - Bones Lane (15-18) over Rufus Lee (4-9). Lee lost his 6th decision in a row. C Jake Houghton scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th after leading off with a single, advancing to third on back-to-back errors and trotting home on RF Arther Purfield's long flyball. Silver Borresen had 3 hits and a double, but got caught stealing and did not score a run or have an RBI. CF Willie Schommer had 4 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored once.

St. Louis (0) at Philadelphia (7) - Charlie Moss (17-18) over Socks Hawkins (8-6). Moss allowed 10 hits and walked 2 batters, but gritted his teeth and toed the line, helped by his defense, that only made 1 error and turned 3 double plays. RF Tom Sturtz had 5 hits with a double, but neither scored nor drove in any runs. 1B Pete Bucolo of St. Louis almost match Sturtz: he had 4 hits with a double, but no runs or RBIs to his name. St. Louis had scored at least 2 runs in every game up until this one.

On Sunday, Heinie Auen, age 53, passed away from acute complications of diabetes. He managed the Providence Grays to the International Association Championship in 1876. When the team withdrew from the International Association and joined the New England League as the Rhode Islands, the team's backers wanted Auen to continue to manage, but he declined the offer due to poor health. He won 42 games and lost 28 as the manager of Providence for a winning percentage of .600.
