RIP Tony Gwynn

Just heard this on radio. Very sad; he was only 54.

I had no idea that he was even sick. What an absolute shame.

Man, one of the great hitters of my youth, gone too soon. Only Wade Boggs rivaled him as a pure old-school hitter from the 80's-90's era, IMO. Even though I'm a Cardinal fan, this hits me even harder than Stan Musial's death, since Stan at least lived to a ripe old age. RIP, best Padre ever.

Great guy, great ambassador for the sport, and with a work ethic second to none. He will be missed.

One of the best pure hitters the league has ever seen. Combine that with his loyalty to San Diego knowing that he left millions on the table to play for "his team" and you have one of the best players to ever play the game. RIP

I swear I saw him bang a single the opposite way one handed, while using the other hand to eat a hot dog.

Yeah, he always seemed like a class act. I remember his ESPN conversations with Ted Williams. Good stuff.

He had mouth cancer, which can be attributed to tobacco use. He had part of his jaw removed a few years back to get rid of it. Last year, during the post-season, he revealed that it had come back, and was hopeful he could beat it again.
