Ideal salary cap?

I would normally play with no finances because I don't want to deal with anything other than escalating salaries, free agency, draft contracts, etc, but I am wondering what an ideal salary cap would be for a league where there is another evolution from season to season. In other words, the salary cap stays the same every season. It would come down to players either seeking "top player" money, or once they got to that level it would come down to what team they wanted to play for. Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions? Let's assume my never-changing league existed in the 80's era.

I tend to go with 30 times the average salary when I'm setting up leagues. I don't know if it's ideal, but it seems to work okay.
