Annapolis Admirals Preview

In this league the Annapolis Admirals would be considered the "Evil Empire" with the #1 budget ($216,000,000) and the #1 payroll ($193,080,000) they seem to be able to buy who ever they want (or need). Owner Ramon Vazquez, Jr. is a very lenient and Charitable owner, and all he wants is a Championship, something that has eluded the Admirals as of now. In their 6 years, the Admrials have won their division 4 times and have amassed a career winning pct of .578 (577-421). The are predicted to win the division yet again this season, but are currently 2nd after a slow April.

The Admirals are managed by Ken Moore. Ken has been with the Admirals since 2015 and is in his 5th year. He has never won less than 93 games and holds a .591 (398-276) winning pct as a manager. Before coming to Annapolis he was the bench coach for the Milford Clippers.

The Admirals are the home to one games most dominate pitching stars. Signing a 6 year/$108,100,000 deal during the off-season, leaving Wilmington, Marcos Estrada has the ability to take over and dominate any game. He is the only pitcher in the game with 100 wins and 1500 K's, and at the age of 31 there doesn't seem to be an end near. He is a 2x time 20 game winner and 2x Golden Arm award winner. Off to a hot start this season (3-1 2.94), he looks to be well on his path to another dominate year. For his career Marcos is 112-49 2.61.

The Admirals also opened up their pockets and brought in the games premier slugger. One more HR to go and Abraham Thomas will be the first man in DBL history to reach the 300 HR plateau. Abraham signed to play in Annapolis for 3 seasons for a total of $59,600,000. The Admirals are Thomas' third big-league club, following the Richmond Cardinals and Washington Senators. He has lead the league in HR's 4 times, RBI's 4 times and Total Bases 3. Last season could of been one of the best seasons of all time, when Thomas hit .321-60-155. I still surprised he didn't win the batter of the year.

The Admirals also have man who beat Thomas out of that Silver Slugger award, Glenn Jenkins. Jenkins is now in his 2nd year in Annapolis after signing a 3 year $55,800,000 contract. He repaid the Admirals by hitting a record .383 last year, which saw him post an OBP of .505! Jenkins and Thomas are one of the most feared 3-4 hitters in the game.

With the money to buy the players they want its not surprising that the Admirals only have an average farm system (12th out of 20). They won't need any young guys filling voids as long as the older guys can stay healthy. This team will get on base and score a lot of runs, could they be the next 1000 run team? Quite Possibly. Do they have enough pitching? That is the big question.

Roberto Perez collected 2 hits, and drove in 3, including a 2-run HR (6). Kent Davis, Jeff Lewis Mauro Candelaria and Augusto Rodriquez each added 2 hits. Ed Duke added a 3-run HR (5). The Cav's defense turned 4 double plays.

Off Day: May 1st

Game 27: Norfolk 1, Annapolis 2
Miguel Contreras (ND) battled Marcos Estrada to a 0-0 tie through 7 innings. Migule went 7, striking out 7, allowing just 8 hits. The Cav's scored one in the top of the 9th, but Dalton Whitaker couldn't get the game closed, blowing the save and taking the L (1-1, 2 BS). The Cav's collected 8 hits off of Estrada, 9 for the game with Jeff Lewis, Ed Duke and Mike Ford all with 2 each. Mike Ford singled in Jeff Lewis in the 9th for the Cav's only run.

Game 28: Norfolk 9, Annapolis 1
Matt Hollis (5-1) continued his strong season start, going all 9, allowing 6 hits and 1 run, while walking 3 and striking out 9. The Cav's collected 12 hits, with Roberto Perez leading the way with 3 of them. Jeff Lewis and Kent Davis each had 2. Joe Chambers (2), Javier Janchez (1) and Ed Duke (6) all went deep for the Cav's. Lewis and Perez each had 2 RBI's.

Game 29: Norfolk 6, Annapolis 8
Arturo Ramirez (ND) took the ND, going 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 6 runs. He struck out 6 and gave up 3 HR's. Vaughan Griffith (1-1) took the loss, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs in 2 innings. Vaughan struck out 4 and gave up 2 HR's. The long-ball was not nice to our pitches today. Roberto Perez again collected 3 hits. Jeff Jewis, Cody Johnson and Joe Chambers each had 2 hits. Ed Duke hit a 2-run HR (7) and Augusto Rodriquez hit a solo-shot (2).

Transactions: Ivan Pineda was activated from the DL and sent down to AAA.

Game 30: Norfolk 9, Annapolis 4
Shawn Brock (4-2) helped us earn a series split, going 6.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 4 runs. He walked 7 and struck out 4. Ron Reilly collected the save going the final 2.2 innings, allowing only 2 hits. Roberto Perez, Ed Duke and Maik Wassink all had 3 hits, the Cav's had 11 total. Perez scored 2 runs. Ed Duke went deep again (8), and Wassink drove in 2 with a triple.

Line-up Adjustments: Reilly pitched a little relief this week, as Jamie King was given a start to give Reilly a rest. Not by my choice, but the manager overrode my decision to keep Reilly as the #5. He will be back there after Kings start, however.

Around the League:
  • Jose Mata of the Ocean City Tourists hitting streak reached and ended at 20 games.
  • Jose Colon of the Annapolis Admirals will be out 4 months with a broken bone in his elbow. The 33-yr old 2B was hitting .229-0-8 on the season.
  • Raul Torres of the Milford Clippers will miss 4 months with shoulder inflammation. Torres has 4 saves in 10 G, posting a 0-2 record and a 3.97 ERA
  • Maximo Sanchez of the Washington Senators will miss 6 weeks after he sprained his elbow. Sanchez was hitting .272-5-14 so far this season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Brad Jones, Newark Millers, 22 K's, 13.2 IP, .184 OBA, 2-0 0.00
MarVa: Roberto Perez, Norfolk Cavaliers, 14-28 1 HR, 6 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (143.0)
2) Baltimore Barons (121.0)
3) Milton Brewers (121.0)
4) Milford Clippers (116.0)
5) Ellicott City Express (107.0)

GM Notes: That wraps up a 15 game road trip, then we head home for 4 and back out for 8 more. Oddly enough that doesn't translate to a lot of home games to end the season, as we are only the road 8 of our last 12. We finished that road trip 11-4, but it will be nice to have some home games... Ed Duke is warming back up, which is nice he hit a wall there for a a couple of weeks. Crazy what one bad week does to your stats... Augusto Rodriquez is now hitting .216, as he is starting to hit the ball better. I don't expect Augusto to hit .300, but he should at least hit .250... King Brock comes back next week, which means Joe Chambers will be heading back down to AAA. Chambers hit .303-2-6 with the Cav's, scoring 9 times. The best part about Chambers is in 42 innings at SS and 43 at third, Chambers was flawless. Making me wonder if I should trade Perez off now and keep Chambers up here... The draft pool was released its not that deep, with only 11 players 4* or better.

Ocean City Tourists Review

The Ocean City Tourists have always been that team that just misses, as they have finished 2nd 4 times. They have just had the bad luck of being in the same division as the Admirals. In 2015 the Tourists won the division, their only playoff birth, and haven't been able to get back again. The Tourists have a career winning percentage of .539 and have one 90 or more games 2 times.

The Tourists have the 9th biggest budget ($148,000,000), and the 9th highest payroll ($131,310,000), so they aren't afraid to spend money to get better. They are under the control of 2nd year manager Brody Grant. Grant come to Ocean City in 2017 as the Bench Coach, after spending 4 years managing the single-A squad of the Milton Brewers, the Boise Wranglers. He won the single-A title in 2014. Last season Brody lead the Tourists to a 2nd place finish and 84 wins. This year they look to increase on that and knock Annapolis out of the top slot. They have the offense, the big question is do they have the pitching?

Their Minor League System is rated 18th out 20. They just don't have much help coming up the chain with their top prospect ranked #63 on the top 100 list. And James McIntosh (20), 2.5*, .222-3-13 (A), isn't a whole lto to write home about. The time for the Tourists is now, with a thin minor league system and a nice young core of players.

Their top hitter is Francisco Reyes, 29, who is singed thru 2022. He is a pure power hitter, he has hit over 45 HR's 4 times in 7 years. He is your typical #3 or 4 hitter, who drives the ball and knocks in a lot of runs. He is a lifetime .296-272-779 hitter. Currently he is the starting LF, but at one point in his career he was a gold glove 1B. He is the rare guy who has spent his whole career with just one team, he was drafted in the 26th round of the inaugural draft.

Another guy on their offense who is making a lot of noise is rookie catcher Ray Key. He is 25 years old and putting up solid numbers, .331-10-27, which lead to the rookie of the month award last month. Key and Reyes form a solid foundation for a line that will put up a lot of runs for years to come.

James McLaughlin signed last season to be the ace of the Tourists staff. He spend the previous 5 years with the Newark Millers, posting a 92-48 3.11 career record. He won 20 games in 2015 and consistently puts up 10-15 wins a season. He first year in Ocean City he put a solid 17-11 4.01 record, and this year he has set his sights on 20 wins. James is a true team leader and someone the younger kids on the staff can look up to as a mentor.

The idea was the McLaughlin and Steve McClellan would make a formidable 1-2 punch, but went down early last season (2018) with shoulder inflammation and just couldn't regain his stamina. In 2017 Steve went 16-10 4.27 and has 54 career wins. With the injury Steve has taken over the closer role and has locked down 7 out of 8 saves so far this season with a 2.93 ERA. He has adjusted well to the role. Its not where the Tourists would of liked him, and is in a contract year it will be interesting to see what happens to him at the end of the year.

The Tourists have a win-now attitude and would love to knock Annapolis from the top slot. Its going to be a tough task, but there is a lot of hope in Ocean City and the fans back this team. With a thin minor-league system the clock for this team to win is running short. The time is now and they know it.

Ellicott City Express Review

Last season the Express finished with 80 wins, the most they have ever had. This team has struggled with payroll problems and wins over the years. They were plagued with bad management decisions, such as their highest paid current player, who takes up 28% of their payroll and is playing in AAA. Jorge Sanchez had a huge first year in the DBL then signed a 6-yr deal with the Express, and he hasn't lived up to any expectations or hype. He has been a payroll drag on this low-budget (#15th in the league @ $108,000,000), low payroll team (16th @ $81,895,000). Sanchez still has another year left on his contract!

Santiago Ortiz has been managing the Express since 2015 (246-338 .421 overall), after spending 2 years as the bench coach for the Richmond Cardinals. Has turned this team into a 2nd place team, at least that is what he believes he can do. Ortiz is in the last year of his contract, and he is hoping his performance this season will earn him an extension. Last year 80 win, this year 2nd place. Its not his fault that he plays in the same division as the Cavaliers!

The one thing this team has going on for them is their youth! Lead by 2017 rookie of the year Will Riley, who has put up consistent numbers his first two seasons in Ellicott City (.291-19-85 & .295-17-77). Riley was the #1 prospect in baseball in 2017 and he didn't disappoint. Its nice having a 23-year old catcher that you can build around, since top-notch catchers are hard to come by.

Riley, along with Doug Dook, who at 25, gives the Express and 3-4 punch that can last a few years. Dook doesn't hit for average, but he does play above average defense and he can hit the long-ball, hitting 25 two years ago and 30 last season. Dook is a player to watch, he can put up some big numbers and if the Express can continue to get runners on base Dook should be able to consistently drive in 100+ runs.

Their pitching staff has some solid young arms in it as well, with second year player, 25 year old, Pete Holbrook (7-17 6.24 last year) looking to gain on his experience last season and develop into the teams #2 man, and so far he it looks like he is well on his way 4-3 4.53 this season. And 22 year old rookie, Raimonod Bernasconi who is off to a 4-1 4.89 start this year. Between Bernasconi and Holbrook this staff looks to be developing into a solid rotation that will be feared in the future.

They are young and they have a below average minor league system, coming in at #13 in the latest rankings. Their top prospect falls in at #51 and is close to coming up to Ellicott to start throwing. He is currently in AAA, posting a 3-3 7.34 record. The Express management would like to see see Randy Pearce work on his control, which in-turn will lower his ERA and at 21 they have some time to let him grow and develop.

Overall this Express team hasn't had a lot of success over the years, but this year they have a goal of winning at least 82 games. Can they? Is it possible? The team is young so yes anything is possible... and you know someone in the front office is counting down the days when Jorge Sanchez comes off the books and 20+ million becomes available! The future is bright in Ellicott City...

Week 6 (2019)

Current Week: 4-3 (27-10 (+6))
Next Week: 1 @ Ellicott City Express, 4 @ Richmond Cardinals, 1 vs Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 89
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 229 (1st)
Avg: .310 (1st)
HR: 34 (8th)
SB: 63 (1st)
Runs Against: 129 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.36 (1st)
Pen ERA: 3.23 (2nd)
Def Eff: .730 (1st)

Transactions: King Brock has been activated from the DL. He will be placed in the line-up and Joe Chambers will be sent down to AAA. Joe really impressed me during his short time with the Cav's and makes me feel like 3B will be in good hands when Roberto Perez leaves.

Game 31: Ocean City 2, Norfolk 6
Jamie King (1-0) got the start today, giving Ron Reilly an extra break, and he pitched suprisingly well, going 7 innings, allowing just 2 hits. Dalton Whitaker struck out the side in the 9th in a non-save opportunity. Roberto Perez lead the way for the Cavaliers offense going 3-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI's, including a HR (7). Javier Janchez added 2 hits and King Brock added 3 RBI's, on a bases clearing double.

Transactions: Elmer Hawkins was activated from the DL after an 11-day stint. Luis Gonzalez was the odd-man out getting shipped back down to AAA. Luis only pitched in one game, going 3.1 innings and taking a loss.

Game 32: Ocean City 3, Norfolk 1 (11 Innings)
Miguel Contreras (ND) had some tough luck and took home the no-decision, allowing 1 run on 6 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 5. Dalton Whitaker blew the save (3) in the 9th, allowing the tying run. Vaughan Griffith (1-2) took the loss, getting roughed up in the 11th, unable to record an out, Vaughan gave up a walk, 2 hits (both HR's) and 3 runs. The offense was quite, collecting 6 hits, all singles, with Cody Johnson, an 8th inning sub, and Ed Duke each getting 2.

Team News: Roberto Perez contacted me and said he has really enjoyed his time in Norfolk and he wants to stay. He is looking for a 9 yr deal for $171,000,000. That isn't going to make it in Norfolk, way out of our budget. At 29, I could possilby see 9 year deal, but I'd rather stay away from that long of a committment. My offer is 6 years, $95,000,000. If he does sign, he will move to the DH roll, and King Brock will head to 1B making Mike Ford expendable. Joe Chambers is the 3B of the future no questions... he didn't even let us leave the table, he did however lower his $ amount 9 yrs / $168,660,000. Something we will revisit.

Game 33: Ocean City 4, Norfolk 2 (11 Innings)
Matt Hollis (ND) went 9 strong innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 8, but left in a tie. Elmer Hawkins (1-1) took the loss, allowing 2 runs in the 11th, on 1 hit and 2 walks. The offense was dormant once again collecting only 8 hits, 1 for extra-bases. Javier Janchez had 2 hits, including a double and Jeff Lewis added 2 hits, and stole 2 bases.

Game 34: Ocean City 2, Norfolk 12
Arturo Ramirez (4-1) won again, throwing 92 pitches, over 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 4. Dan Nelson went the final 3 innings, allowing just 2 hits for the save (1). The offense woke up a little bit today, collecting 17 hits. Lead by King Brock who had 4 hits and 3 RBI's, including 3 doubles. Kent Davis added 3 hits and 3 runs. Jeff Lewis added 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI's and Javier Janchez collected 2 hits.

Game 35: Norfolk 7, Ellicott City 2
Shawn Brock (5-2) continued his strong season, going 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 6. Ron Reilly, got a little work out of the pen, going 3 innings, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 3 for the save (1). The offense collected 13 hits, and left 10 runners on base. Roberto Perez lead the way with 4 hits. Bryan O'Neil showed he was happy to be back up with the big club, going 3-3 with 2 runs. Maik Wassink added 2 RBI's on a double before leaving injured.

Injury News: Maik Wassink has been diagnosed with a quad strain and will miss about 5 weeks of games. He has been placed on the DL. For the season Maik was hitting .323-0-10 in limited time... After a long debate inside my head, I decided to bring up Emilo Gonzalez, instead of Joe Chambers. If Chambers isn't going to play every day, I don't think its wise to have up him with the big club.

Milestone: Abraham Thomas becomes the first DelMarVa Baseball League player to reach 300 HR's. Thomas knew it when he hit it. He raised his hands in the air, then ran the bases like a high school player, clapping and grinning. He told reporters in the postgame interview, "I was acting goofy running the bases... but it was my 300th home run."

Game 36: Norfolk 5, Ellicott City 3
Ron Reilly (4-0) went 5.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 4. A total of 5 relievers held the Express to 1 hit over the final 3.2, with Dalton Whitaker going the 9th for the save (10). Kent Davis lead the way with 3 hits, inluding a double, the only Cavaliers extra-base hit. Augusto Rodriquez added 2 hits and 2 runs.

Injury News: Ron Reilly complained of shoulder pain, and was removed in the 6th inning. After an evaluation it looks like he will miss his next start, so he has been placed on the 11-day DL with "Shoulder tendinitis". Vaughan Griffith will move into the #5 starter slot and we called up Luis Gonzalez. Reilly is 4-0 on the season, but it might be getting time to send him away. He is a possilbe Free-agent at the end of the season and is looking for about 3-yrs/5 million. With my depth in pitching, maybe its time to see whats out there. Prospects? Something to think about.

Game 37: Norfolk 9, Ellicott City 12
Miguel Contreras (ND) got roughed up in 3.1 innings of work, and was lucky enough to take home the ND. Miguel gave up 6 hits and 1 walk, which lead to 7 Express runs. Luis Gonzalez went 1 innings in relief giving up 5 hits and 5 runs. Dan Nelson stopped the bleeding with 2 innings of shut-out releif. The Express scored 7 in the 4th and 5 in the 5th! The Cavaliers offense was lead by 4 players with 2 hits each: Kent Davis, King Brock, Mauro Candelaria and Ed Duke. Ed Duke and Jeff Lewis each drove in 3. Lewis also scored 3 runs.

Injury News: King Brock was pulled from todays game when he pulled up a lame running the bases. His diagnosis is pending. No changes will be made yet, Cody Johnson, Bryan O'Neil and Emilio Gonzalez will DH in the meantime.

Around the League:
  • Keith White will miss about 4 weeks with elbow Soreness. The New Castle Colonials starter is one of the games best when healhty, nad recently that hasn't been much. NC needs him to compete this year: 4-2 2.45 8 GS.
  • Marcos Netio will miss 2 weeks, as another injury hits the Colonials. Neito over-extended himself on his comeback trail from a sprained ankle: .245-2-4
  • Bill Downey of the Milford Clippers will miss 2 months with a torn triceps. The closer of the Clippers will be missed. 2-2 2.78 3 SV's.
  • Mr. Post Season, Jack Clow will miss the rest of the year with a torn-flexor tendon in his elbow. It will be about 11 months before we could see Jack pitch again. The Georgetown Sixteens are now in the market for a new closer: 1-2 1 SV, 7.36.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Ricardo Flores, New Castle Colonials, 13-24 4 HR's, 8 RBI's
MarVa: Ray Key, Ocean City Tourists, 11-21, 4 HR's, 11 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (132.4)
2) Milton Brewers (131.6)
3) Baltimore Barons (121.8)
4) New Castle Colonials (106.2)
5) Newark Millers (105.2)

GM Notes: Injuries, injuries and more injuries. I can't remember a year that the Cavaliers have been this fragile. Its always been one or two "big" ones, but not a bunch of small annoying ones. If King Brock goes down for a long period then Joe Chambers will be my 3B and Perez will move to DH. I am pretty much sold on the fact that Perez and the Cavaliers won't come to an agreement on an extension. I am also set that I will not be trading him. He is coming along for the ride, and the way he is hitting the ball so far this season, he could be well on his way to third MVP award... We keep on winning, but this was a bumpy week. I hate the close games followed by the blow outs. Makes me feel like my offense is falling asleep... We are losing ground in the HR's category. Not sure what to do, we can win without them, right? I think we can, we have in the past, it is, however nice to have that guy that you fear every at bat, right now I don't think we have that... Miguel Contreras hasn't had any luck this year and he has got hit around a little bit more than I have seen. Is he intimidated by Hollis and his success??... Its getting a little tense around the Cavaliers front office, with all the injuries, the lack of winning extra inning games (0-3), poor management decisions (see Ron Reilly). Hopefully things will settle down. Alistair maybe wearing out his welcome...

Francisco Gonzalez

The credit for the Cavaliers winning has always gone to manager Alastair Turcotte, who took over the team in 2014 and has lead them to 4 titles. But behind their scenes there is someone who never gets enough credit, his name Francisco Gonzalez. Known has Franky to the players and staff he has been in Norfolk since 2013 and has flow under the radar. Who is Franky? He is the team trainer, he has helped players of all skills get back to health and not miss as much time as they had expected.

He has come under some fire this season, however, due to the rash of little injuries, something that the Cavaliers have never had to deal with in the past. Since spring training there have been 14 injuries that have taken out players from 3 days to 3 weeks; Something we'd like to see end in Norfolk.

Franky has earned himself the tag as one of the games best, but this season has put him under the microscope. He calmly sits in his office and tells people to relax, everything is going to be alright... but is it? With one of the offensive power houses King Brock down again, this could throw up a red flag. Was King rushed back? Is Franky losing his edge?

One of the only 2 members of the original Cavaliers staff (Alastair was the bench coach in 2013 before taking over as manager in 2014) he is well liked and well respected, but that doesn't mean you still don't have a job to do. For the rest of 2019 Franky will be looked at a little closer the he has in the past.

Scott Smith an Ex-Cavalier who bounced back from 2 ulnar collateral ligaments, missing a total of 20 months over a 3 year period believes if it wasn't for Franky that he wouldn't of hurt himself a second time. In 2013, Smith missed 12 months with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, then after a full year in 2014, he suffered almost the exact same injury that sidelined him for all but 2 games in 2015. He believes that Franky gave him the ok to pitch on a full schedule way too soon, and the 134 innings in 2014 were just too many. "I don't know, I am just a pitcher and at the time I was 23, I didn't know any better. But looking back, I think 134 innings was too much for my 'new' elbow." Currently he is pitching with the Baltimore Barons (his 4th team in 5 years) out of the bullpen. Last season he threw 68 innings over 52 games with Wilmington, the most he has been used at the big league level. Now at 28 years old Scott still thinks he has some usefulness, despite a slow start in Baltimore. Since his second elbow injury and his trade from the Cavaliers (2016) he has missed a combined 8 weeks with injuries.

Mauro Candelaria, an original Cavaliers player, who has had his share of injuries, missing time 7 times in 7 years due to various ailments, including missing 3 months last year with a partially torn laburm, and 7 weeks in 2014 with a fractured finger. But he has also played in 155+ games 4 times, including 162 in 2017. And he gives Franky a lot of credit for his health and ability to play that many games. "Look what happens in that trainers room is something that you guys don't get to see, I can't tell you how many times I have had my ankles taped, my wrists ice, ice baths, heating pads, massages, whatever it has been, he has made sure I have been able to get out to the field and play. Injuries happen, you can't blame Franky when someone slides funny and sprains their ankle, or gets hit by the ball and breaks their thumb. Without him we wouldn't have had the same amount of success... "

Many people have mixed feelings about Franky, including the General Manager... Is this the end of the story or just the beginning?

General Manager Tony Luke didn't have much to say about the rumors coming out of Norfolk "Franky and I have been here since 2013 we have a good working relationship and we are lucky to have him here, that is all I have to say."

Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 263 (1st)
Avg: .305 (1st)
HR: 42 (7th)
SB: 75 (1st)
Runs Against: 146 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.24 (1st)
Pen ERA: 3.06 (2nd)
Def Eff: .725 (1st)

Game 38: Norfolk 9, Ellicott City 1
Matt Hollis (6-1) continued to win games, as he shut down the Express over 8 innings. Allowing just 3 hits and 1 run, while striking out 7. The offense was lead by kent Davis who had 3 hits and Ed Duke who went 2-2 with 2 HR's (10) and 3 RBI's. Mike Ford and Cody Johnson also added 2 hits. Roberto Perez hit a 2-run HR (8).

Injury News: After the game Francisco Gonzalez let us know that King Brock will miss about 2 weeks with a mild hamstring strain. He will be sent to the DL and Joe Chambers will be called up to play 3B. Roberto Perez will head to the DH slot.

Game 39: Norfolk 3, Richmond 2
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 6 strong innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, striking out 6, before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Will Rose (1-0) pitched 2/3 innings of shutout ball and Dalton Whitaker took home the save (11). We beat Don Sweetapple again, thanks to an error by the Cardinals SS and a 2-run HR by Ed Duke (11), the only extra-base hit for the Cavaliers. Jeff Lewis and Mauro Candelaria each added 2 hits. The Cav's had 5 total hits on the day. Joe Chambers committed his first error of the season.

Game 40: Norfolk 2, Richmond 3
Shawn Brock (ND) pitched well enough to win, but the offense couldn't back him up. Brock went 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs (1 ER). Dalton Whitaker (1-2) struggled with his control in the bottom of the 9th, allowing 2 walks before giving up the game winning hit. The Cavaliers offense was sluggish to say the least, collecting 6 hits, with Jeff Lewis accounting for 2 of them. Lewis and Kent Davis each had an RBI.

Game 41: Norfolk 6, Richmond 7
Vaughan Griffith (ND) struggled over 6.2 innings, allowing 9 hits, 3 walks and 6 runs. The bullpen kept it close till Luis Gonzalez (0-3) gave up a walk-off double. Augusto Rodriquez had 3 of the 10 Cavaliers hits. Joe Chambers added 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Other than that the offense didn't do a whole lot.

Game 42: Norfolk 6, Richmond 4
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs (2 ER) while striking out 5 on his way to yet another no decision. Jamie King (2-0) gave up a run on a hit an 2 walks to give up the lead, but was lucky enough to get credited for the win. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th for the save (12). Mauro Candelaria lead the offense with 3 hits. Kent Davis and Roberto Perez each added 2. The big blow however was a pinch-hit 3-run HR for Bryan O'Neil (1) to give the Cav's the lead in the 8th.

Game 43: Virginia Beach 0, Norfolk 8
Matt Hollis (7-1) was one out shy of collecting another complete game, going 8.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and striking out 11. Jamie King retired the last batter to end the game. Ed Duke lead the offense going 3-3 hitting 2 HR's (13) and driving in 4. Kent Davis also had 3 hits. Jeff Lewis hit a 2-run HR (5).

Around the League:
  • Cristobal Diaz of the Lewes Braves will miss the next 9-10 months with a torn labrum. On the season in 7 starts Cristobal was 2-3 3.20. Diaz is 20 years old, with a bright future.
  • Anthony Dundee, the ace of the Georgetown Sixteens, will miss the next 12 months with a torn labrum. He was off to a great start this year in 9 starts posting a 5-1 2.21 record.
  • Todd Eldridge of the Newcastle Colonials is out 3 weeks with a strained hamstring. In 9 starts this season Eldridge is 2-3 4.19.
  • The Ellicott City Express traded Dylan Clark to the Milford Clippers for 19-year old prospect Armando Vazquez (4*). Clark was hitting .336-4-18 for the Express at the time of the trade.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Leonard Davis, Lewes Braves, 10-14, 4 HR's, 8 RBI's, 7 Runs
MarVa: Ed Duke, Norfolk Cavaliers, 8-20, 5 HR's, 10 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (135.8)
2) Milton Brewers (118.2)
3) Ocean City Tourists (114.7)
4) Georgetown Sixteens (114.7)
5) Ellicott City Express (108.7)

GM Notes: Ron Reilly, Maik Wassink, King Brock and BH Chong will be back next week, which is pretty awesome, getting this team close to full strength... I have been in talks with the Newark Millers regarding a trade for Ron Reilly and with Reilly about to roll off the DL, that trade could happen. I am looking for a swap of first round picks #5 vs #20 and a prospect. Not sure how it will go. Reilly is going to be expensive next year and his injury troubles seem to be popping up again. Plus we have 2 starters that are ready to go now, and one on his way to being the ready in 2020... Ed Duke seems to be back on track, having one of those weeks. Book-ending it with 2-HR games. Its something I need more of, we just seem to go into big power slumps at times. Especially with double-machine King Brock on the bench... I am happy we are back to playing the Surf Dawgs we seem to just pound on them, gives the offense some confidence. Its good to see... Our bullpen has shown signs of weakness. Will Rose still has an ERA over 6. Luis Gonzalez is really struggled. Vaughan who has been strong out of the pen is now in the rotation. If I do pull of a trade for Reilly, expect Vaughan and Takayuki Iemochi to take over the #5 slot. I like what Vaughan has done out of the pen.

Virginia Beach Review

The Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs were an expansion club in 2017 and have struggled to find their footing. This their 3rd year in the league is quite possible going to be their worse. After losing 107 games in 2017, the Surf Dawgs lost 118 in 2018 and so far this year they are on pace to lose over 120! They are struggling with the bat (team .224 average) and are on the way to breaking ERA records (team 6.50 ERA). Owner Dan Foster has the GM's hands tied with a $86,000,000 budget (19th in the league) and a payroll of only $65,115,000 (18th), and the worse part of it all is he is a very controlling owner. That doesn't give much hope to the fans of the Surf Dawgs, nor the GM Brill Brown and Manager Lee Jackson.

Lee Jackson returns to managing this year, after spending the past 4 years as the bench coach in Washington. He managed the Newark Millers in 2013 and 2014, and has a career record of 100-154 (.394). He believes that this team can win games, and based on the leagues worst attendance numbers he may be the only one.

The Surf Dawgs have some hope in the future, but it won't be for a few years. They have what is rated teh 10th best minor league system, with 2 of the top 20 prospects. At #14 they have 20-year old Wayne Weaver a 5-star 5-tool propsect is playing in A-Ball, during his second year in pro-ball (1st Round pick in 2018). And at #17 Henry Hammer is 19-years old and playing A-ball in his 2nd year in pro-ball (2nd Round pick in 2018). Both players are struggling so far this season, but have bright futures and give the fans in Virginia Beach something to look forward to.

For the time being they fans of Virginia Beach will have to root for 2 grossly overpaid talents, Kenny Lee and Jose Villa. Both players signed huge deals in 2017 to be the big draws in Virginia Beach and both haven't done what was expected of them. Kenny Lee was coming off a career year in 2016 where he hit .304-18-72. then he signed a 6 year / $112,800,000 contract and hasn't come close to those numbers again. His best year was in 2017 where he put up .281-16-81, and since then he has fallen off the map. At 33-years old the Surf Dawgs expected much more from him. This season he is off to a slow start .230-4-12 and is currently sitting on the DL.

Jose Villa signed a 7 year / $99,600,000 deal to play with the Surf Dawgs, making the most of a career season in Annapolis (15-12 3.92). Villa had a solid year in 2017 12-14 3.88, then last year couldn't get any wins thanks to 2.4 runs per game. Villa went 6-21 5.14. He is off to another disappointing season this year (2-4 5.59 10 GS), but its hard to blame him.

The only positive this team has going for them is their bullpen, lead by closer Rudy Richards. Rudy has 7 saves and has posted a 1.17 ERA so far this season. Rudy came over in a trade before the season this year and has been very impressive. He is up for arbitration next season, so it will be interesting to see how the Surf Dawgs handle him and his contract.

This team is just in bad shape. There are 2 free-agents out there that could help this team, but they are are afraid to dish out any kind of money. Till then they will be last in hitting and last in pitching, but something needs to be done or last seasons 118 losses will look like a good season...

Week 8 (2019)

Current Week: 6-1 (37-13 (+8))
Next Week: 4 vs Chesapeake Blue Crabs, * End of Month *, 2 vs Salisbury Ports
Power Ranking: 1

Runs Scored: 310 (1st)
Avg: .307 (1st)
HR: 44 (7th)
SB: 83 (1st)
Runs Against: 160 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.07 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.96 (2nd)
Def Eff: .722 (1st)

Game 44: Virginia Beach 1, Norfolk 13
Arturo Ramirez (5-1) went 5.2 innings of 2-hit ball, allowing 1 run (solo HR) and striking out 8. Luis Gonzalez went 3.1 perfect innings for the save (1). The Cav's love hitting against Virginia Beach and today was no exception, as they pounded out 16 hits. Mike Ford and Jeff Lewis each had 3 hits to lead the offense, Lewis drove in 2, Ford 2. Javier Janchez had 2 doubles and 2 RBI's. Joe Chambers, Augusto Rodriquez and Roberto Perez also added 2 hits.

Game 45: Virginia Beach 3, Norfolk 10
Shawn Brock (6-2) went 5.2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 5 walks and 2 runs, while striking out 5 before leaving hurt. Jamie King went the final 1.1 to pick up the save (1). The Cav's had another 16 hit performance, with Kent Davis leading the way with 4 hits. Mike Ford had another 3 hit day and Jeff Lewis and Javier Janchez added 2 each. Mauro Candelaria and Roberto Perez each drove in 2.

Injury News: Shawn Brock left today's game early with an undisclosed injury. He will spend some time with Franky to see whats going on. Takayuki Iemochi was recalled and placed into the rotation.

Transactions: Ron Reilly is ready to come off the DL. He will be placed on the active roster, sending Luis Gonzalez (0-3 7.56) back down to AAA. Vaughan Griffith will get another start (tomorrow) then Reilly will replace him the rotation.

Trade Talks: This injury diagnosis may end up putting the kibosh on a deal that was going to send Ron Reilly to the Newark Millers. We are in discussions with the Millers sending them our #1 and Ron Reilly for their #1 and a catching prospect. Not sure if we can handle going down another SP right now.

Game 46: Virginia Beach 1, Norfolk 8
Vaughan Griffith (2-2) went 7.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, while striking out 7. Will Rose retired the final 4 hitters. The Cavaliers collected another 12 hits with Joe Chambers leading the way with a 2-3 day, including a HR (3) and 4 RBI's. Cody Johnson, Ed Duke and Jeff Lewis each collected 2 hits.

Game 47: Norfolk 4, Baltimore 2
Miguel Contreras (ND) is going to start being called Mr ND as he took another one after yet again a solid start. Miguel went 6.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run before leaving the game. Elmer Hawkins (2-1) took home the win with 2/3's of a shut-out inning and Dalton Whitaker got the save (13) striking out the side in the 9th. The Cav's scored all 4 runs in the top of the 8th, thanks to an RBI single by Augusto Rodriquez and a 3-run HR by Javier Janchez (2). Cody Johnson and Javier each had 2 hits.

Injury News: Shawn Brock has officially been diagnosed with a bone spur in his elbow and will miss about 4 months. He is scheduled for surgury tomorrow. He missed 4 months last season as well with a partially torn labrum. His chronic elbow issues are becoming concerning. Brock was 6-2 4.30 on the season.

Game 48: Norfolk 7, Baltimore 3
Matt Hollis (8-1) didn't have his a-game, but had enough to get the win. Hollis went 6.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and 3 runs, but he did strike out 8. Dalton Whitaker threw the 9th for the save (14) striking out 2. Kent Davis lead the offense with 4 hits. Ed Duke and Mike Ford each had 2. Duke, Candelaria and Joe Chambers each drove in 2.

Transactions: King Brock is coming off the DL. He will move to the DH spot, meaning Roberto Perez will head back to 3B. Joe Chambers is hitting the ball too good to be sent down (.322-3-17), and will be the back at 3B, SS and 2B, getting a lot of PT. Emilo Gonzalez was sent down to AAA.

Trade Talks: The Newark Millers GM didn't think our deal was good and was wondering if we were open to more discussions, they really want Reilly. We are going to pull out of the deal since the injury to Shawn Brock. Reilly is here to stay, at least for now.

Game 49: Norfolk 1 , Baltimore 4
Arturo Ramirez (ND) had to leave the game after 2 pitches. Rick Kelly (2-1) ended up taking the loss going 2.2 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. Elmer Hawkins went 2.1 innings and gave up 2 runs as well. The Cav's offense had 10 hits, and left 8 runners on. Mauro Candelaria and Kent Davis each had 2 hits.

Injury News: Arturo Ramirez will miss 1 week with a strained forearm. He will be sent to the 11-day DL and Ivan Pineda will be called up to replace him on the roster. Vaughan Griffith will move back into the rotation to take the next start or two.

Game 50: Norfolk 4, Baltimore 0
Takayuki Iemochi (1-0) didn't disappoint in his first big-league start, going 8 shut-out innings, allowing just 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. The offense was lead by Augusto Rodriquez who drove in 2. 7 different Cav's had 1 hit, 4 different Cav's scored runs.

Transactions: Byung-hyun Chong has been activated from the DL and sent down to AAA. He is in line to replace Byran O'Neil on the roster, but O'Neil is hitting the ball too well to lose his back-up slot. Chong who has struggled so far this season can use the extra swings.

Around the League:
  • Barney Butler of the Christiana Blue Hens will miss about 3 weeks with a strained back muscle. Butler the ace of the staff has been having an impressive year for the Blue Hens: 6-2 1.43 10 GS.
  • Dave Moore, the 39 year old shortstop of the Lewes Braves, is out 4 weeks with a herniated disc. Moore was having a rough start to the season and this doesn't help: .203-4-21
  • Victor Mateo of the Wilminton Iron Pigs will miss 2 weeks with shoulder tendinitis. As a starter this season Mateo is 3-2 6.15 in 8 games.
  • Steve Jackson one of the young guns of the Ellicott City Express, is set to miss the next month with shoulder teninitis. The 25 year old 3B was hitting .290-0-5, since coming back off the DL.
  • Mark O'Higgins of the Chesapeake Blue Crabs will miss 4-5 months with a strained hip muscle. O'Higgins was hitting .296-0-9 in 71 AB's so far this season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Charles Culligan, Lewes Braves, 11-25, 4 HR's, 9 RBI's
MarVa: Tom Anderson, Ellicott City Express, 9-21 2 HR's, 8 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (140.2)
2) Milton Brewers (118.2)
3) New Castle Colonials (116.0)
4) Ellicott City Express (110.4)
5) Georgetown Sixteens (109.4)

GM Notes: This was a solid week for the Cavaliers. Losing our #4 starter hurt, but having the depth to bring up someone to take his spot without missing a beat makes the injury a lot easier to take. I really like Shawn Brock, but elbow injuries in back-to-back seasons really makes me lose faith in him. Now I have to think about Brock or Reilly, this off-season one of them is going. There will be some other factors, Arturo Ramirez and his stamina, the development of Paul Brown and Vaughan Griffith. Next year I will have an abundance of starting pitching... Its nice to have King Brock back, but I am disappointed with the playing time for Joe Chambers. I can't get trade Roberto Perez at this time, so do I keep him up or send him to AAA to get some swings? He has proven he is ready for the bigs... The only thing this team is missing is power, we just have no one that can hit HR's. One thing about Francisco Gallegos is he is a true power hitter, but I am not sure he will be able to hit enough to stay on the big club, maybe I will be able o sign someone this off-season (not sure where I will put them however)... I am liking how we are playing, just need to get and stay healthy!

May (2019) - In Review

Players of the Month:
Delaware Conference:

Batter of the Month: Peter Peters, New Castle Colonials
May's Best Batter Announced: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 26-year-old Peter Peters put together a solid offensive month for New Castle and was crowned May's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .380 with 5 home runs, 17 RBIs and 22 runs scored. So far this season Peters is hitting .326 with 10 home runs, 35 RBIs and 40 runs scored. He has 61 hits in 187 at-bats and a .453 OBP.

Pitcher of the Month: Jorge Moran, Milton Brewers
Milton Starter Named De Conf's Best Pitcher: Veteran Jorge Morán put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Milton Brewers, earning himself the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. Morán racked up a 5-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 1.91 ERA over 33 innings and striking out 33. In 11 starts this season, Morán has picked up 9 wins while suffering no losses. He has pitched 75.1 innings, allowed 44 hits, struck out 75 and posted a 1.91 ERA.

Rookie of the Month: Sozen Kawamura, Christinia Blue Hens
Delaware Conference Names Rookie of Month: Youngster Sozen Kawamura emerged as the latest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Christiana deserved the honor, batting .269 with 6 home runs and 21 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Kawamura enjoy the limelight. This season Kawamura has hit at a .235 clip and produced 34 RBI, 12 home runs and 27 runs.

MarVa Conference:

Batter of the Month: Ed Duke, Norfolk Cavaliers
Duke Wins MV Conf's Best Bat Trophy: Ed Duke has made a definite impact on the baseball world by snatching MarVa Conference Batter of the Month honors for May. In 23 games the Norfolk batter hit .329 with 8 home runs, 25 RBIs and 18 runs scored. This year Duke has hit at a .305 clip with 48 RBIs, 13 home runs and 28 runs scored.

Pitcher of the Month: Matt Hollis, Norfolk Cavaliers
Hollis Nets MV Conf #1 Pitcher Award: Matt Hollis hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice. In May the Norfolk starter earned a 5-0 mark in 6 starts. He threw 50.1 innings, struck out 52 and compiled a solid 1.97 ERA. This season Hollis has a 9-1 record with a 2.11 ERA in 11 starts.

Rookie of the Month: Valentin Valdes, Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs
MV Conf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Valentín Valdés's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Virginia Beach second baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .317 with 5 doubles, no triples and 7 home runs. Valdés also scored 12 times and drove in 16 runs. Posting a .276 batting average to date, Valdés has 11 home runs and 25 RBIs.

League Leaders (as of June 1st, 2019)
Delaware Division:

AVG: Alonso Reyna (Milton Brewers) .375
HR: Jorge Alonso (New Castle Colonials) 17*
RBI: Alonso Reyna (Milton Brewers) 49
SB: Pedro Galavan (Dover Generals) 25

ERA: Brad Jones (Newark Millers) 1.23
W: Jorge Moran (Milton Brewers) 9*
K: Brad Jones (Newark Millers) 88
SV: Carlos Rodriquez (Lewes Braves) 18

Marva Division:
AVG: Kiyonobu Matsuura (Annapolis Admirals) .377*
HR: Francisco Reyes (Ocean City Tourists) 19
RBI: Abraham Thomas (Annapolis Admirals) 52
SB: Kent Davis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 27

ERA: Matt Hollis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 2.11*
W: Matt Hollis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 9
K: Matt Hollis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 85*
SV(t): Dalton Whitaker (Norfolk Cavaliers) 14
SV(t): Andrew Pompey (Ellicott City Express) 14*

Southern Division: Predicted Winner: Lewes Braves 103-59
The Molton Brewers and Georgetown Sixteens are looking to be the top teams in this divison, as the Lewes Braves are going to have to fight to keep up this month thanks to injuries and the Dover Generals are starting to fade out. If Jorge Moran continues to pitch the way he has been the Brewers may take the division for the first time since 2013.

Northern Division: Predicted Winner: New Castle Colonials 96-66
The Colonials are starting to pull out from the rest of the group. Leading the division by 3 games and it looks like Peter Peters is back in full swing. With him hitting and Jose Matos on the bump this team can go a long way. The biggest surprise is the collapse of the Wilmington Iron Pigs. The Blue Hens are looking to become the first 2017 expansion team to not finish in last.

Eastern Division: Predicted Winner: Annapolis Admirals 91-71
The Barons have cooled off and the Admirals have turned it on. This looks to be the Admirals division to lose. You can't count the Barons out just yet, but the way the Admirals are playing June could be an important month for Baltimore.

Western Division: Predicted Winner: Norfolk Cavaliers 119-43
The Cavaliers are slowly pulling away. The way the Express are playing it should be a lot closer race than it was last season, but it looks like the Cavaliers may hold their own. Injuries have tried to take them down, but they have continued to battle and pull ahead.

Ex-Cavaliers of Interest:
Jesus Rivera: New Castle Colonials: Batting Lead-Off: .274-6-26, 37 Runs, 8 SB
Jose Matos: New Castle Colonials: #1 Starter: 12 GS, 6-3 2.98, 3.4 WAR
Cooper Mananghaya: New Castle Colonials: MR: 12 G, 0-0 3.46, 13.0 IP, 12K's, 0.2 WAR
Derek Campbell: Washington Senators: #4 Hitter: .320-10-32, 28 Runs, 2.6 WAR

300 Career Stolen Bases
SB: Roberto Perez - 75
-- Ron Alder the only other player with 300 SB's, reached last season. Alder has 311 currently

200 Career Saves

Norfolk Recap

We didn't win 20 this month, which is the first time in a long time (we did every month last year) that we haven't. Be injuries or what, but it was a shocker, since I feel like we are playing much better ball now than we have been. We won 8 of our last 10 games in May.
April: 21-5
May: 19-9

Injuries and inconsistent hitting seems to be our biggest issue so far this year. Our pitching staff has been solid, and the young guys we have asked to fill in holes have come up big. The team is still leading the league in Average and Runs Scored, but it just doesn't seem like we can put it all together when we need it. One game we get 13 hits, the next 4...

Ed Duke tore it up last month, winning the POM award and making it look like we have a legit HR threat. After a hot start, then a couple of sluggish weeks he has come around. The biggest change was putting in John Phillips ever 5 days to get keep Duke fresh. Looks to be working. Javier Janchez has been a little disappointing and probably should come out of the leadoff slot. Last month he hit .229 and only got on base .282. Mauro Candelaria who hit only 2.50 but had a OBP of .374 would probably fit the leadoff mold better, may get some more PT there. Take some pressure off the young kid.

It is nice to see Will Rose warm up after a rough April. And overall our pitching has just been lights out. Vaughan Griffith has struggled, but he has also been shifteda round bullpen/starter/bullpen/starter, so I won't blame him. He never complains either, which is a good thing. Luis Gonzalez had one solid outing, but outside of that one game has been really off. Matt Hollis was lights out, and Miguel Conterars almost went the whole month witout a decision, collecting 5 ND's. I will have to keep an eye on things, it seems like the bullpen is being utilized very inconsistently again. Rick Kelly only appeared in 2 games, yet Hawkins, Rose, King and Whitaker got 10+... hmm...

After two months I am happy with where we are, but we could use some improvement. More consistent hitting, better use of the bullpen and some runs for Miguel Contreras.

Our minors are looking good, we only have one time leading a division, but all of them have winning records. As long as the players are getting their swings and innings and that leads to wins and player development I wont' complain. The players we consider prospects are performing nicely for us, which is looking good.

Yokohama Baystars (AAA) 26-23 .531 (-11.5)

The History of the # 1 picks

With the 2019 1st Year Player Draft coming up next, I thought I'd take a look back at the previous 6 #1 picks, and where they are now...

2013 - Jorge Moran, Starting Pitcher, drafted #1 by the Chesapeake Blue Crabs out of Columbia U. He signed for $4,750,000. After signing in 2013 Jorge was placed on the active roster and has pitched as a starter and MR for the rest of the year. Jorge has been a full-time starter since 2014. He won 21 games in 2015, 20 games in 2016. He was traded to the Milton Brewers in 2018 and has been the anchor of their staff every since. For is career he is 98-49 3.22. At 29 years old, he is one of the games top LHP.

2014 - Gabriel Santos, Starting Pitcher, drafted #1 by the Norfolk Cavaliers out of highschool. He signed for $4,500,000. In 2018 he was rated the games #45 top prospect, but in 2019 he fell off the list. He is 23 years old and has never developed into the "ace" everyone predicted. Currently he is pitching for the Baltitmore Barons AAA Squad and has been converted to the closer role. 2019 marks his 3rd year at AAA and possible his last. He should be making his big-league debut soon. This season he is 3-0 8 SV 1.33 ERA in 17 games.

2015 - Phil Carlson, Starting Pitcher, drafted #1 by the Lewes Braves out of high school. He signed with the Braves for $9,060,000. In 2016 he was traded to the Milton Brewers. Carlson is now 22 years old and is in his 2nd season in AA. He has control issues that many believe he will never overcome. Last season he posted a 12-6 4.53 record in 27 AA starts, this season he is 3-1 5.03 in 10 starts. He is well on his way to being the biggest bust for a #1 pick.

2016 - Will Riley, Catcher, drafted #1 overall by the Ellicott City Express out of Vanderbilt U. Signed a $9,190,000 signing bonus. After one year in the minros, he was named the #1 prospect in baseball. In 2017 Riley made his big-league debut and took home the Newcomer of the Year Award. In 2017 Riley hit .291-19-85. Currently he is the #4 hitter and offensive leader of a young and exciting Express team. For his career he has played in 328 games and hit .290-47-197.

2017 - Cornell Pearson, SP, drafted by the Seaford Blue Jays with the first pick in 2017, out of Creighton. He signed a $8,250,000 deal. Rated the #6 prospect in baseball in 2018. In 2018 he climbed the ladderf rom AA to AAA to the bigs and ended up in the Blue Jays starting rotation. He is listed at the Blue Jays #3 starter, but has the ability to be an ace once he full develops. Probably could use some more time in the minors, but the Blue Jays are desperate for pitching. This season he is 1-4 5.49 in 8 GS.

2018 - Pablo Garcia, SP, Salisbury Ports, was drafted out of Oral Roberts University and signed for $7,700,000. He started his career in 2018 in single A and dominted down there. Finishing the year going 5-1 1.70 in his last 7 starts. He has it all and could end up being the ace for the Ports for many year to come. The only question is does he have the stamina to be a real 'ace', that will be determined. In 2019 he was rated at the games #1 prospect, and a solid spring training meant a roster slot on the Ports. In 11 starts he is 4-3 with a 3.36 ERA. He should content for the Newcomer of the year award, but playing for a lost place team might hurt in the long run.

Of the 6 #1 picks, all but 2 are in the big-leagues now and only 1 could really be deemed a "flop". I am surprised that Gabriel Santos hasn't made the big's yet as he has developed into a pretty solid pitcher. I traded him to Baltimore along with Tony Soto for Roberto Perez. Perez went on to win 2 MVP awards, so I am going to say I got the best of that deal. The 2019 draft is up next and I am not overly excited for it. It doesn't look like its going to be a very deep draft, and we don't pick till #20.

2019 First Year Player Draft Results

2019 First Overall Pick:
With the first pick on the 2019 First Player Draft the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs have picked Shunen Koyama, out of the Univeristy of New Mexico. Shunen is a 20-year old CF with a 4* talent. He is fast (Speed: 13, Stealing: 15, Baserunning: 17), plays great outfield (LF: 18, CF: 12, RF: 17, Range: 15, Error: 14, Arm: 16) and should be a solid hitter in the future (Contact: 7/11, Gap: 10/14, HR: 6/12, Eye: 4/8, K's: 5/11). If the Surf Dawgs and Shunen come to an agreement it will be interesting to see where he starts his minor league career, but don't expect him to spend too much time down on the farm.

--------
2019 Norfolk Cavaliers Draft:
1) Round 1: Pick 17: 17th Overall: Mark Bolton, Catcher (Normal)
Our scouting director, Antonio Diaz, said we shoudl go for Kevin Snyder, a 22 year old, hard thrower (99-101 MPH), who has 5* talent. He is listed as a MR and has one pitch (FB: 14/16) that is solid and another one that needs to be developed (SL: 6/13). His stamina is 20 and overall he looks like a solid pick. He was drafted and didn't sign last year as the #15 pick overall... BUT his injury history is fragile! Why would I want to pick a middle reliever with a fragile injury history? I don't... So with our first pick, I went with 21 year old catcher, Mark Bolton, out of St. Johns U. He is a top defensive talent (C: 17, Ability: 13, Arm: 13) and has some room to get better. Rated 1*, Potential 4*. He should be an easy sign and will give us some backup catching help in the future:
Contact: 8/10, Gap: 7/9, HR: 6/10, Eye: 7/11, Avoid K: 6/11

2) Round 2: Pick 16: 44th Overall: Steve Combs, SP (Extremely Hard)
With our 2nd pick I went with Steve Combs, a HS SP, who is 18 years old out of Baltimore MD. He has 3.5* potential, throws 93-95, gets 56% grounders and has the potential for 10+ control. He might be a tough one to sign, but I have faith we will be able to work things out.
Stuff: 6/11, Movement: 10/13, Control: 5/10

3) Round 3: Pick 19: 63rd Overall: Ignacio Gallo, SP (Easy)
Ignacio Gallo a Lefty from UNC, who has 3.5* potential. He throws low 90's, gets 56% grounders, hold runners on well and has 15 stamina. He is listed as a MR, but I am going to get him some reps as a starter to see how it works out. He did start while at UNC. One reason I went with Igancio is he is very itelligent and has a very high work ethic. Can't go wrong there.
Stuff: 9/11, Movement: 8/8, Control: 7/12

4) Round 3: Pick 24: 68th Overall: Carl Spence, IF (Extremely Hard)
Carl Spence, is our second HS kid from the Baltimore area. He is rated a 1* prospect, but he is a solid fielder (SS: 15, Range: 19, Error: 18) with good speed (Speed: 14, Steal: 13, Base running: 13), but there are questions about his bat. Currently he has very little potential, but we hope he can grow and learn, he is list at 6'1" 175, so we know there is room.
Contact: 2/5, Gap: 6/8, HR: 2/4, Eye: 6/12, K's: 2/8

5) Round 4: Pick 20: 88th Overall: Jason Doyle: IF (Extremely Hard)
I went with the guy with the highest potential, and that was Jason Doyle and middle infielder out of HS. Most teams shied away from him, believing he wont' sign no matter what. We will see what happens. Doyle is very similiar to Spence, with speed and a glove, he is also 18 and measures in at 6'0" 170. We will see if we can him on.
Contact: 5/9, Gap: 4/8, HR: 2/5, Eye: 4/10, K's: 1/5

6) Round 5: Pick 20: 108th Overall: Frank Combs: OF (Normal)
With the pickings getting slim, we went with another speedster/defensive talent, but this guy is an outfielder. Frank Combs out of LSU. He is 20 years old, 6'0" and 190 pounds. He wasn't overly impressive at LSU this past season, but we think he could bloom.
Contact: 6/8, Gap: 6/8, HR: 1/1, Eye: 4/6, K's: 3/7

7) Round 6: Pick 20: 128th Overall: Will Wallace, SP
With our 7th pick, we went with a lefty out of a small university (Lebanon Valley), Will Wallace. He throws 4 pitches, has decent stamina and should be able to hold his own in the minors. Since the competition level of his college was poor, we really don't know how he will transition. We have faith that he will be able surprise, and if not no harm done.
Stuff: 6/7, Movement: 8/8, Control: 4/6

8) Round 10: Pick 20: 208th Overall: Glenn Young, SP/UTL (Extremely Hard)
With our final pick and the last pick in the draft we went with high schooler Glenn Young. Glenn is listed as a pitcher, but he may end up playing the field. He had the highest contact and avoid K's potential on the board. He didnt' get to swing the bat much in HS only getting 36 AB's, but he did hit .417. We will convert him to a fist or third baseman and see what happens. The joy of the last pick.
Stuff: 4/6, Movement: 7/7, Control: 4/9
Contact: 4/9, Gap: 6/9, Power: 1/1, Eye: 4/6, K's: 4/11

Now its time to try to sign these guys...

GM Notes: Vaughan Griffith is really liked around here, but his days as a starter might be slipping away. He just doesn't have the movement on his pitches that a starter needs, and that is leading to way too many long-balls. Last season he posted 1.08 HR/9 this season that is up to a whopping 2.27 HR/9. This may a) make him tradeable or b) turn him into a reliever... Our Defensive Eff dropped to #2, and we lost .006 points, that doesn't make me happy, especially since we have had the same team on the field most of the season... Mauro Candelaria has suffered some growing pains learning out to play 2nd base, committing 6 errors and posting a ZR of -6.5. Last season he only committed 2 errors all season playing 1B. His rating at 2B is 10, been creeping up all season... I am not going to make a move with Janchez yet, I am going to keep him in the lead-off slot. If I do move him there will be more changes necessary. If I just swap him and Mauro, then I will have 3 lefties in a row... Vaughan Griffith will get one more start, then Arturo will be back in the rotation. Takayuki Iemochi will stay in the rotation, as well as he has pitched in his first 2 starts it will be hard to move him out. Vaughan will head back to the pen.

Week 10 (2019)

Current Week: 6-0 (48-14 (+13))
Next Week: 4 vs Annapolis Admirals, 3 @ Ocean City Tourists
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 89
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 400 (1st)
Avg: .311 (1st)
HR: 62 (6th)
SB: 95 (1st)
Runs Against: 206 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.20 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.84 (2nd)
Def Eff: .718 (2nd)

Game 57: Salisbury 1, Norfolk 10
Miguel Contreras (5-0) won for the 2nd straight time, goin g8.1 innings, allowing just 1 hit and 1 run, while striking out 6. Joe Chambers was the offensive star going 3-4 with 2 runs and 4 RBI's, including a Grand-Slam (4). King Brock added a 2-run HR (7) and Jeff lewis had 2 hits.

Injury News: Javier Janchez will be out around 5 days with an intercostal sprain. I thought about putting him on the DL, but I am not going to. Instead I am going to send Ivan Pindea back down to AAA and bring up Sergio Galvez to play left field. Galvez has been learing 1B in AAA and his putting up solid offensive numbers. He will lead-off and play left for the next 5-6 days.

Game 58: Salisbury 2, Norfolk 6
Matt Hollis (10-1) didn't have his best stuff, throwing 104 pitches over 5.2 innings. He only allowed 4 hits, walked 3, no runs and struck out 4. Dan Nelson went the final 3.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, and was credited with the save (2). Roberto Perez had 3 hits. Kent Davis had 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Augusto Rodriquez added 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI's, including a HR (3).

Transactions: Arturo Ramirez is eligible to come off the DL. Dan Nelson will be sent down to AAA to make roster space for Arturo. Vaughan Griffith will start tomorrow then Ramirez will assume his roll in the rotation.

Game 59: Norfolk 6, Washington 2
Vaughan Griffith (3-3) went 5.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 runs, walking 3 and striking out 7. Dalton Whitaker struck out the final batter of the game for the save (15). Roberto Perez and Jeff Lewis each had 2 hits. King Brock hit a 3-run HR (8). Cody Johnson added a solo-HR (3). Mauro Candelaria drove in 2.

Draft News: Glenn Young isn't happy with the $150,000 we offered. Mind you he was the last player drafted in the draft and is demanding 2 million. He can go back to school, we won't negotiate any further.

Game 60: Norfolk 5, Washington 4
Takayuki Iemochi (ND) went 6.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs (1 ER), while walking 3 and striking out 5. Jamie King (3-0) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball for the win and Dalton Whitaker went the final inning for the save (16). Sergo Galvez pinch hitting for the injured Kent Davis went 2-2 with his first 2 big league hits. Ed Duke (both doubles), Mauro Candelaria and Bryan O'Neil each added 2 hits. King Brock drove in 2.

Draft News: Our 3rd round pick Carl Spence isn't happy with what we had to offer and is asking for $300,000. We will boost our offer to his demand and see what happens.

Game 61: Norfolk 11, Washington 7
Ron Reilly (6-0) went 7.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 6 runs (5 ER), while striking out 6. Elmer Hawkins recorded the final out for the save (2). Augusto Rodriquez lead the way with 3 hits and 2 RBI's and Mike Ford added 2 hits and 3 RBI's. Cody Johnson, Roberto Perez and Sergo Galvez each had 2 hits. Perez drove in 2, scored twice and made 2 errors.

Draft News: Mark Bolton our #1 pick has signed for $1,200,000. He will be sent down to A-ball to get his career started. We are very excited to see him develop.

Injury News: Kent Davis is out, diagnosis pending. Javier Janchez is back healthy, and will move into the CF slot until we find out what is wrong with Kent.

Game 62: Norfolk 15, Washington 7
Miguel Contreras (6-0) went 8 innings, allowing 7 hits and 7 runs while striking out 5. He was the benefactor on an offense that collected 23 hits. Ed Duke lead the way with 3 hits, including a Grand-slam (15), and drove in 7. Roberto Perez added 4 hits and 2 runs. Mauro Candelaria added 2 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBI's. Jef Lewis added 3 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBI's. King Brock added 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI's. Mike Ford and Javier Janchez both added 2 hits. Every Cavalier starter, but Augusto Rodriquez who had 1, had at least 2 hits!

Draft News: Jason Doyle our 4th round pick isn't happy with the $150,000 we offered and is looking for around $260,000. We will bump the offer up, not quite to his demand, but close $230,000.

Off Day:
Injury News:
The off-day news wasn't good as we were informed that Kent Davis will miss 3 weeks with a pinched nerve. He was sent to the 11-day. Javier Janchez will assume CF details and Sergio Galvez will remain in LF. Dan Nelson was recalled and will be back in the bullpen for the Cavaliers.

Draft News: Carl Spence decided he didn't want to play in the Norfolk organization and has broken off further negotiations... Frank Combs our 5th round pick wasn't happy with the $150,000 we offered him and is looking for $260,000. I will offer him $225,000.

Around the League:
  • Todd Eldridge the #2 starter for the New Castle Colonials will miss another week after suffering a set-back during his recovery of a hamstring injury.
  • Steve Jackson the young 3B for the Ellicott City Express will be out 2-3 weeks when he suffered a set-back during his rehab for shoulder tendinitis.
  • The Ocean City Tourists and Annapolis Admrials pulled off an interdivisional trade, with the Tourists sending Catcher Jacob Chaney (.234-2-5) to the Admrials for 35 yr-old RF Juan Salas (.299-5-20).

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Melvin Riley, Lewes Braves, 8-16 2 HR's, 6 RBI's
MarVa: Valentin Valdes, Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs, 11-20, 1 HR, 3 RBI's, 4 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (155.4)
2) New Castle Colonials (120.3)
3) Georgetown Sixteens (115.3)
4) Milton Brewers (110.3)
5) Lewes Braves (108.5)

GM Notes: We did what we are supposed to do against the not-as-good teams in our division. Sweeping both the Salisbury Ports and the Washington Senators. For the week we didn't lose and again 5 games on the Express. Up by 13 games, we are starting to pull away... We start off next week with a big 4 game series with the Annapolis Admirals. This should be an interesting series, since it most likely will be us vs them in the playoffs (once again)... Roberto Perez shouldn't be playing third, but I have no idea where to put him. King Brock is entrenched as the DH, Mike Ford is raking at first base and I need Perez's bat in the game. But this week he committed 4 errors. One thing Joe Chambers will offer next season is a huge defensive upgrade. I still find it hard to believe that Perez actually won a Gold Glove at 3B... I am not a big fan of removing Vaughan from the starting rotation, but there are only 5 slots and I don't think going to a 6-man is the right thing to do. Next season is going to be even a harder decision, since we will have 7 solid starters...

Week 11 (2019)

Current Week: 6-1 (54-15 (+16))
Next Week: 1 @ Ocean City Tourists, 4 vs Ellicott City Express, 1 vs Richmond Cardinals
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 89
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 426 (1st)
Avg: .305 (1st)
HR: 66 (6th)
SB: 103 (1st)
Runs Against: 224 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.16 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.73 (2nd)
Def Eff: .717 (2nd)

Game 63: Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1
Matt Hollis (ND) threw a great game holding the Admirals powerful offense to 8 hits over 7.2 innings, while striking out 10. Dalton Whitaker (3-2) pitched a shut-out 9th for the win. The Cav's won on a walk-off single by Jeff Lewis, which knocked in Sergio Galvez who lead the 9th off with a double. The Cav's only had 5 hits, 2 in the 9th.

Game 64: Annapolis 4, Norfolk 1
Takayuki Iemochi (2-1) suffered his first loss, going 6 innings, allowing 11 hits and 4 runs. He did walk 4 and struck out 6. Dan Nelson pitched 1 hit ball over the last 3 innings. Augusto Rodriquez and Jeff Lewis each had 2 hits. Javier Janchez hit a solo-HR (4) for the Cav's only run.

Draft News: Our 2nd round pick Steve Combs agreed to our offer and is headed to Single-A. We are still in talks with our 4th round pick Jason Doyle and our 5th round pick Frank Combs.

Game 65: Annapolis 1, Norfolk 2
Arturo Ramirez (ND) threw a solid first outing back from injury, out pitching Marcos Estrada. Ramirez went 7.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run. He walked 4, struck out 5 and threw 100 pitches. Will Rose (2-0) took home the win pitching 2/3 innings of shut-out relief. Dalton Whitaker got the save (17) with a shut-out 9th. The Cav's only had 7 hits, with Sergo Galvez collecting 2 of them. King Brock and Joe Chambers each had an RBI.

Game 66: Annapolis 7, Norfolk 8
Ron Reilly (ND) went 6.2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks. Jamie King (4-0) took the win in relief throwing 1.1 innings of perfect ball. Dalton Whitaker rockily (2 H, 1 R) closed the door for the save (18). The Cav's bats hit the ball well today, collecting 11 hits, with 3 each coming from Mike Ford and Jeff Lewis. Jeff Lewis added 4 RBI's, including a 2-run HR (7). Cody Johnson added 2 hits, and Augusto Rodriquez added a 2-run HR (4) and 2 runs. King Brock's career high 20-game hit streak comes to an end.

Injury News: Maik Wassink suffered yet another set-back during his rehab for a strained quad. He will be out around 1 more week, if not longer.

Draft News: Jason Doyle our 4th round pick has signed. I had him written off, didn't think he'd come aboard. Our late push worked out and he is off to A-ball.

Game 67: Norfolk 5, Ocean City 2
Miguel Conteras (7-0) won for the 4th straight start, going 8 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run. He struck out 7. Vaughan Griffith picked up the save striking out the only batter he faced (1). The offense was lead by Mauro Candelaria and Jeff Lewis each with 2 hits. Javier Janchez went deep (5) and scored 2 times.

Game 68: Norfolk 5, Ocean City 2
Matt Hollis (11-1) went 8 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 11. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th, loading the bases, for the save (19). Jeff Lewis had a 3 hit day to lead the offense. Roberto Perez, Sergo Galvez and Mike Ford all had 2 hits. 5 different Cav's drove in runs, and 5 different Cav's scored.

Game 69: Norfolk 4, Ocean City 2
Takayuki Iemochi (3-1) got the win, pitching 7 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs. Vaughan Griffith pitched the 9th for the save (2). King Brock lead the offense with 2 hits. King Brock and Mike Ford both scored a run and drove in a run.

Injury News: We have been dealt some bad news. Will Rose has damaged his elbow ligament and will miss the next 13-14 months! Rose has been our left-set-up man for the past 4 years and he will be missed. He is under contract thru the 2020 season, and we look forward to getting him back. This season Will has pitche din 27 games, 21.2 innings, with a 2-0 record and 3.74 ERA. He will be sent to the 60-day DL... Derek Carter has been recalled to take Will's roster slot.

Around the League:
  • Francisco Durango, one of the offensive starts for the Baltimore Barons will miss 3-4 weeks after hearniating a disc during a game earlier this week. Durango has been a key part to the Barons offense hitting .314-12-33 on the season.
  • Kyle Stanford of the Salisbury Ports has thrown in 26 games this season, posting a 3-0 5.40 record, but his season is coming to an end. He has been shut down with a torn back muscle and is expected to miss 4-5 months.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: George Waller, Milton Brewers, 15-27, 1 HR's, 5 RBI's
MarVa: Jorge Sanchez, Ellicott City Expresss, 10-20, 5 HR's, 10 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (153.9)
2) Georgetown Sixteens (117.2)
3) Milton Brewers (111.6)
4) Baltimore Barons (108.3)
5) Lewes Braves (108.3)

GM Notes: I reached out to Roberto Perez and made him an offer. He was looking for 9 years @ 19 million per year, so I approached him with a 6 year @ 16.5 million per year deal. He said he would think about it. Ever have buyers regret? Well I am pretty sure I will if he signs this deal. If he does sign, then you can expect us to move Mike Ford, shift King Brock to 1B and have Perez DH. Guess we will sit back and see what he has to say... This was a successful week, taking 3 of 4 from the Admirals, but it showed how close we are in talent as all four games were close... It was good to see ex-Cav Joe Gould to have a solid start during game 1. He was happy we traded him away... Vaughan Griffith is turning himself into quite the reliever. I would like him in the starting rotation, but he may have to wait till next year. Ron Reilly will be moved in the off-season, especially if Perez resigns... Sergio Galvez has been impressive during his short stint with us so far, its nice having this young talent coming up. Sergio Galvez and Javier Janchez are both under 22 years old, they may be our outfield of the future... Even if we don't get Frank Combs to sign, I would have to say our draft-signings were a success. We got our #1 draft picked signed, which is always a big deal, our #2, one of our #3 and our #4. Thats a success... Mark Bolton is 2-20 in his first 5 games in A-ball. Hopefully he starts hitting the ball... I am hoping that Will Rose injury isn't going to hurt us as much as I feel it will.

Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 458 (1st)
Avg: .304 (1st)
HR: 68 (t-6th)
SB: 107 (1st)
Runs Against: 240 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.14 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.61 (1st)
Def Eff: .717 (2nd)

Game 70: Norfolk 10, Ocean City 2
Arturo Ramirez (6-1) continued his hot streak with 5.2 innings of 6 hit ball. Allowing just 2 runs and striking out 8. Elmer Hawkins went the final 3.1 innings allowing just 2 hits. The Cav's offense exploded for 10 hits, including a 5-hit day by John Phillips. Phillips also added 2 runs and 2 RBI's. Mike Ford and Augusto Rodriquez each added 3 hits. Rodriquez led the offense with 3 RBI's.

Game 71: Ellicott City 5, Norfolk 6 (12 Innings)
Ron Reilly (ND) went 7.1 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits. He struck out 7 and gave up 4 long-balls. Dalton Whitaker (4-2) got the win striking out the only 2 batters he faced. Augusto Rodriquez lead the offense with a 4-hit day. Ed Duke added 3 hits, including a 2-run HR (16). Joe Chambers also had 2 hits.

Draft News: We have come to terms with Frank Combs, our 5th round draft pick, on a signing bonus and Combs will be sent down to A-ball to hopefully learn how to hit. He has the speed and glove just a lot of questions about his bat.

Game 72: Ellicott City 2, Norfolk 6
Miguel Contreras (8-0) won again, this time going 7.1 innings, allowing just 1 run on 6 hits. Vaughan Griffith continued to be solid in the pen, going 1.2 innings, allowing just a solo-HR. Joe Chambers lead the way with 2 hits. Six differnt Cav's had an RBI and Six differnt Cav's scored runs.

Game 73: Ellicott City 1, Norfolk 0
Matt Hollis (11-2) took the L, but pitched a wonderful game, going 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 8. The only blemish was a solo-HR in the 4th. Dalton Whitaker pitched a perfect 9th. The Cav's offense was quiet, getting just 7 hits, all singles. Roberto Perez lead tehw ay with 3 hits. Mike Ford added 2.

Signing News: We have come to terms with Roberto Perez that will keep him in Norfolk for the next 7 years (7 yrs/$115,000,000). It might not of been the "best" idea, but he is a 2x MVP and a fan favorite. At 29 years old he should have a few more good years ahead of him.

Budget Implications: The signing is a good signing in regards to keeping an all-star/MVP on our team for the next 7 years. However, in 3 years we will run into some issues financially. This team is set-up for the long-haul with Kent Davis signed through 2025, Matt Hollis: 2025, Miguel Contreras: 2022, Jeff Lewis: 2024 and a lot of young kids who are under team control through 2023-2025. In 2021, a move will HAVE to be made to free up some money for our arbitration players. Jeff Lewis and/or Perez are top candidates to get moved... The signing was great for stats, but short-sighted financially. I think the GM (yes that is me) feel asleep at the wheel there.

Game 74: Ellicott City 3, Norfolk 5
Takayuki Iemochi (4-1) went 8 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, he added 6 K's. Dalton Whitaker pitched 9th, allowing 3 hits and a run, for the save (20). The offense was lead by Augusto Rodriquez, who went 2-3 with a HR (5) and 3 RBI's. Mauro Candelaria added 2 hits and Mike Ford added 2 runs.

Injury News: Maik Wassink is finally ready to come off the DL. He will be sent down to AAA to get in some rehab swings. A decision will be made if he shoudl join the team or not in a few weeks. Maybe Joe Chambers will go back down to AAA to get more swings until we can figure out what to do with him.

Game 75: Richmond 3, Norfolk 5
Arturo Ramirez (7-1) has been solid since coming off the DL, today he went 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks. he struck out 7. Dalton Whitaker went the 9th for the save (21). Sergio Galvez lead the offense with a 2 hit day. Mauro Candelaria lead the way with 3 RBI's and Roberto Perez added 2.

Around the League:
  • Wilson Acosta is out 2 weeks with a strained hammy. He is the Annapolis Admrials closer and has locked down 15 saves in 29 games, posting a 2-5 record and 3.56 ERA.
  • The Ocean City Tourists will be without one of their young middle relievers for the rest of the season. Al Stoner is out with a torn rotator cuff and will be on the shelf for 4-5 months.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Alberto Trujillo, Milford Clippers, 10-22 4 HR's, 9 RBI's, 7 Runs
MarVa: Jack Dooley, Baltimore Barons, 11-15 1 HR, 1 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (151.6)
2) Milton Brewers (115.4)
3) New Castle Colonials (107.6)
4) Lewes Braves (107.6)
5) Baltimore Barons (107.2)

GM Notes: In what would fall into the category of "odd" news, the Georgetown Sixteens called us up and what us to take Pablo Freitas back! The kicker is they won't our starting 2B, one of our top MR and 2 prospects. We traded him away for a reason and we certainly don't want him back... One thing the Roberto Perez signing did was get the fans in an frenzy! The Fan Interest jumped 10 points to what could be the highest I have ever seen in Norfolk. I wonder how long it will stay at 99... I feel bad for Matt Hollis taking his second loss of the season and it happens becuase that is the day the team decides to take day off with the sticks... Our pitching is heating up, and we have only one "free agent" to be on the staff, that would be Elmer Hawkins. I'd like to keep him around, but at 31 and with a pluthera of young talent ready to make the jump it doesn't make sense. Then again, I have done a lot of things that don't really make sense (see Perez signing)... Just about 1/2 way through the season and everything is looking good for us (knock on wood) the young guys are playing well (Galvez, Janchez and Chambers) the pitching staff is on fire, we just need to stay healthy. This has to be one of the deepest teams in Norfolk that I have lead, and the little nagging injuries haven't been bad. Its the big ones (Will Rose 13 months) that we need to avoid.

Roberto Perez

Friday - June 21st, 2019
We received an email from Roberto Perez notifying us that Roberto Perez has agreed to our deal.

3B Roberto Pérez: Contract Signed: After discussing it with my family, I think I'm going to sign your offer and play for Norfolk. I look forward to remaining a member of the Cavaliers. See you on the field!

Roberto Pérez

This deal was a shock to the owner and front office, even me the GM, who offered him the deal. After talking Perez 2 times before I was certain he wasn't going to budge from his 9 year/19 mill per demand. So I had a discussion with his agent and said, "Look we really want Roberto here, but there is no way we can meet his demand." So I have him an offer, which I thought was somewhat of a low-ball offer, one I never really thought he'd sign. I decided to continue to talk with Roberto for 2 reasons 1) good faith and 2) he is an all-star.

Our offer 7 years. Years 1 through 5 $16,000,000 per, year 6 $17,000,000 and the final year, a player option for $18,000,000. I came in a lot lower and 2 years less, and it worked out. Maybe its because he owns a night club in Norfolk, maybe his family is happy with the schools, maybe he just likes winning and winning is what we have done ever since he has been here. Whatever the reason, he agreed and it shocked us, and it pumped up the fans!

The official press release followed later in the day:
Pérez Signs for 7 years: Team officials triumphantly announced that the Cavaliers and superstar third baseman Roberto Pérez have closed a deal that keeps the 29-year-old in a Norfolk uniform for another 7 years. Pérez will earn $115,000,000 as part of the settlement. Currently Pérez is batting .317 with 10 home runs, 43 RBIs and 66 runs scored.

Perez had been an awesome asset for us, since he joined the Cavaliers mid-season in 2015. He is a great team leader and a great example to the young guys. Perez is constantly one of the first players at the stadium and one of the last ones to leave. The Cav's traded for him because their lineup lacked an offensive player that other teams would "fear". He has power and speed and all he has done since joining the Cav's is bring home 2 MVP awards and put up 2 30/30's. You can't go wrong with having him on your team.

The signing of Perez may end a flurry of long-term deals that will tax the budget in 2022 and 2023. The best part is its still 3 years away, the worse part is having to trade one of big-name guys, such as Perez or Jeff Lewis. At least we have 2 years to think about it.

We would like to join the fans in giving Roberto Perez a big congrats on signing this deal!

2019 All-Star Game

This is the 7th annual all-star game of the DelMarVa Baseball League. The All-Star Games have never let the fans down when it comes to drama, we have had a walk-off, extra innings, close games, blow outs a little bit of everything. Even if the the Delaware Conference has owned the All-Star games, winning 5 of 6, the games have always been a hit with the fans...

All-Star Game History:
2013: MarVa 5, Delaware 6
2014: Delaware 6, MarVa 5
2015: MarVa 7, Delaware 1
2016: Delaware 8, MarVa 3
2017: Delaware 5, MarVa 3
2018: MarVa 1, Delaware 3

This years all-star game looks to be a close battle once again, with both rosters stacked with starting pitching. The Delaware Conference is lead by Jorge Moran, of the Milton Brewers, who has put up one of the best first halves ever for a pitcher, going 14-0 with a 1.69 ERA. The MarVa Conference has one of the games premier power hitters, Abraham Thomas, of the Annapolis Admirals, who is putting up MVP type numbers, hitting.289 with 23 HR's and 70 RBI's.

Lets take a look at the Rosters of the 2018 All-Star game...

2019 Norfolk All-Stars

The Cavaliers will be sending 8 players to the All-Star game, 4 hitters and 4 pitchers. With only one player being a 1st time All-Star, that player surprisingly is Matt Hollis. Hollis won 19 games 2 years ago and 21 last season hard to believe he didn't do good enough to get himself chosen as an All-Star.

Roberto Perez will be making his 7th appearance, the only player on the Cavaliers to play in ever All-Star game. Miguel Contreras will be making his 6th appearance. Dalton Whitaker will be in his fourth straight all-star game, every year since he was handed the closer role. Jeff Lewis will also be making his 4th appearance, his second as a Cavalier. And Ed Duke and Arturo Ramirez are making their 2nd appearance. Kent Davis was voted in for the 5th time, but since he is on the DL won't be playing (at least I don't think so) this season.

King Brock .301-10-49 and Mike Ford .324-4-38 were left off the Roster, but both could of made the team. Brock was hurt for part 3 weeks, which probably hurt his chances and Ford doesn't put up the "power" numbers you'd like to see from a 1B.

Overall having 8 representatives is pretty awesome. Now its time to get the game played and hopefully see a MarVa victory...

2019 All-Star Game

The Story of this All-Star game was the HR's. A beautiful day in Washington with the 10 MPH wind blowing out to RF.

Top 1st: Delaware: Grant Wright lead the game off with a solo-HR.
Bottom 3rd: MarVa: Ed Duke tied it up with a solo-HR of his own in the 3rd.
Bottom 4th: MarVa: Abraham Thomas hit a 2-run HR in the 4th to give the MarVa a 3-1 lead.
Bottom 5th: MarVa: Francisco Reyes singled up the middle scoring Dav McGill. MarVa leads 4-1.
Top 6th: Delaware: George Waller cuts the to 1, with a 2-run HR.
Top 8th: Delaware: Rocardo Florez singles up the middle, Grant Wright, who walked, scores the tying run.
Bottom 8th: MarVa: Jack Dooley gives the MarVa Conf the lead in the 8th with a double to right.
Top 9th: Delaware: Pinch-Hitter Pablo Freitas hits a 433ft 2-run HR to give the Delaware Conf the lead.

Just a fun game to watch. MarVa took the lead, but just couldn't hold on to it and the Delaware Conference continues to own the All-Star games. The lone home-town representative of the Washington Senators was Derek Campbell. Campbell played the whole game and went 1-3 with 2 walks.

Cavaliers:
Jeff Lewis 1-3, 1K
Roberto Perez: 0-3, 1K
Ed Duke 2-4, 2B, HR, 1 RBI, 1 Run
Miguel Contreras 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 K's
Arturo Ramirez 1 IP, 1 K
Dalton Whitaker (BS) 2/3 IP 1 H, 1 R, 1 K
Kent Davis - DNP

After Dalton Whitaker got roughed up in the All-Star game last season he struggled to regain his form, hopefully he will be able to put this behind him and move on.

All-Star Game History:
2013: MarVa 5, Delaware 6
2014: Delaware 6, MarVa 5
2015: MarVa 7, Delaware 1
2016: Delaware 8, MarVa 3
2017: Delaware 5, MarVa 3
2018: MarVa 1, Delaware 3
2019: Delaware 6, MarVa 5
