Setting up Active Rosters

So, this is one of the things I am the most suck in. And that is setting up the active roster properly and making it as deep as possible.

It's simple, but I can't work it out, so i'm asking all of you for some help :P

How many batters do you take, how many pitchers do you take? What is the best mix in your opinions?

Well, depends on your settings and the historical era of your universe. The game suggests a conventional configuration when setting up a league, with 12 pitchers and 13 batters for non-DH leagues, and that's my rule of thumb as well. My 13th batter will occasionally get swapped out for a pitcher depending on what's going on in my season - a long stretch without a day off or a struggling pen.

It also depends on how good your pen/ Staff is I sometimes carry 11 pitchers and a defensive guy and usually do in the playoffs, but some seasons my staff isnt pitching well or If dont have the deepest one so I carry 12.

Normaly 12 pitchers
2 c
2 1B I carry 2 for d replacement/platoon or to be DH
2 2B (can also play 3rd ss but doesn't have to )
1 3B
2 SS
1 LF
2 CF (better to have them play all OF)
2 RF (i like a good hitter in RF so if he dosnt have good D 2 have a replacement)

The replacements are varied depending on how your defense is, I like defense replacements for my weakest to medium defenders if possible

For a modern-day environment, I almost always try to structure my roster as follows:
  • 5 SP
  • 6 RP (including the Closer)
  • Starting 9 (including DH; if no DH then the extra spot usually goes to another IF)
  • Backup Catcher
  • Backup Corner IF
  • Backup Middle IF
  • 2 Backup OF

It obviously helps when you have guys in your Starting 9 that can play multiple positions, but with that basic setup, you should rarely get in trouble when it comes to depth.

I don't have any set criteria besides "who can help me the most." Sometimes that leaves me with just one backup infielder, sometimes that leaves me with just one backup outfielder. I often have 3 or 4 first basemen on my team for DHing, platooning, and pinch hitting. I platoon a lot. I bounce between a 6 and 7 man pen depending on how rested they are. The more involved you are, the more aggressive you can get with lack of positional flexibility and a short pitching staff. That is, if you play every game yourself, you can do a better job of avoiding putting guys in places they shouldn't be playing than the AI. If you sim a week a time though, you want to make sure that the depth chard goes 2 and likely 3 deep at each position

If you play in a Golden Era setting (20's-60's)

10 Pitchers
3 Catchers

I really wish Markus will implement the amount of C on a team for historical simulations one day

I usually run a 7-man pen.

Starting 8 (I generally don't play with DH)
Backup C
Backup SS
Utility IF
Two outfielders, at least one more who is proficient at least in CF.
