Feeder League: Unsigned drafted player repeatedly entering draft

Running a test league and am seeing players not drafted in HS and going to COL, that is fine, then entering the draft while in COL and not being drafted and then repeatedly entering the draft as opposed to being undrafted free agents or at least unsigned undrafted free agents after they complete COL.

My draft pool with default feeder setup in a 16 team league with full minors has grown to over 2500 players.

What I'm seeing in player histories...these 2 players are now 25 and not played COL ball in 2 seasons. After being released from COL in '77 after they were drafted for the 3rd time he failed to sign then was drafted in '78 even though he wasn't back in COL.

Is this how it should work or should at some point the player just enter the FA pool and be available to be signed?

Weird. That's definitely not how it should work.

I agree. My Amateur draft pool has grown to over 2500 players with only 88 HS feeder teams and 20 COL feeder teams.

Also seeing players enter the draft while in COL and going undrafted and going back to COL with a different COL instead of staying in the same school.

I wouldn't mind that so much, I'd actually like it, since many players do switch colleges quite a bit irl. The first issue you posted about is really bizarre though. I wonder if the two are somehow related?

I'm betting you'll need to submit league files as well.

They already have them, I submitted them for the "lagging" issue that is not supposed to be fixed in the next patch.

As for the going to multiple colleges; I think that would not happen often as transferring colleges generally means the player has to sit out a year,

It depends on the level. Transfers to JC's, D2, D3 or NAIA schools don't have to sit out a year and so there are always tons of transfers to those schools.

There aren't nearly as many transfers to D1 schools since those guys do have to sit out a year.

I know there are instances where a player gets drafted a few times (like Mark Appel did for instance) but that's overkill if you ask me....LOL is it a bug of some sort??

San Diego Padres' Andrew Cashner was drafted four times - Joe Lemire - SI.com

Matt Harrington, who I was first looking for when I found this article, was drafted 5 times. These players kept meeting the draft requirements so there is no reason why this should be a bug.

Now, if this is happening to a couple dozen players every year, then there should be an AI tweak but I don't think anything needs to change.

The problem is they are 25 year old college free agents and keep getting drafted. I would say that is not how the system is supposed to work.

By default there were no roster limits on the college teams and most of the teams had rosters of at or above 100. This contributed to the oversized draft pool I think. I changed the COL roster limit to 35. Then I saw that the COL teams had reserve rosters of 80-100 players. I manually retired everyone on the reserve roster for the colleges.

HS teams also had not roster size limit. Have now set those to 35 also.

That, in part, explains the 2500 player draft pool. Still doesn't explain the 25 year olds entering the draft for the 4th/5th time.

They can't get into the major leagues any other way. Either they get drafted and sign or they don't get drafted and can become FAs. If they do get drafted, they cannot become an FA because what's the point of a draft if 2 months later you can just become a FA? So that's probably why they're re-entering the draft - because they were drafted but didn't sign.

At least, that's my understanding of how drafts work.

That does make sense but when does the craziness end. At some point the player has to realize he isn't worth what he is asking for doesn't he? At what point do the teams realize the kid is full of himself?

Maybe not so much a bug as AI logic that needs to be tweaked.

Started a new league and simmed ahead 5 years.

Had 200+ 24 year old players still in the draft pool that were not drafted/failed to sign the previous year. Then this year were not drafted and all but 5 retired at 25yo before the next years draft.

Not 100% sure why these 5 didn't retire but their birthdays are scattered throughout the year. It may be that the ones that retired weren't drafted since it looks like the 5 remaining all were drafted/failed to sign. (the ones who retired had their histories wiped).

We will see what happens to these 5 next season.

One guy's persistence paid off as he was undrafted out of HS then was drafted/failed to sign 3 times out of COL before finally getting a team to give him $2.2mil on the 5th try in the draft.
