Draft Scouting Question

Do you guys use the "request scouting report" when looking at potential draftees? If so what impact does it have, if any?

Also what criteria do most of you guys use for selecting amateurs in the draft?

I typically sort the draft pool by potential rating from the OSA, then ask my scout to file a report on the guys that he disagrees significantly with the OSA on. Once in a while I'll see my scout improve his potential rating of a prospect.

As for what I look for in a prospect, I think that's all subjective. It depends on what skills you value.

Hmm. Never thought to check OSA ratings... Unfortunately reports aren't that helpful if you had a good season and thus a low draft position (i.e. why were there 30 teams checking out Johnny Football when 20 of them have no shot to either draft him or trade up that far).

As for what I look for, a pulse is high on the list . I'm usually pretty lazy and go by my scout's reported potential, although I really should cross-check individual ratings of guys who "drop".

Most of my real winners come from plucking winners out of other teams' minors after they've done the picking, weeding, and grooming for me...

My scout's ratings are pretty good, and I've seen some huge disparities in what he thinks and what the OSA thinks. And since asking him to send a report on guys in the draft pool doesn't take him away from other tasks, I figure why not? It can't hurt to get an update and see if anything changes.
