How do rosters work? (Spring, 40-man)

So, how does the active roster work in Spring? Am I allowed to invite whoever I want up to play? When do I have to have my roster down to 25? Do the people invited stay on my expanded roster throughout the season, or do they 'not count'? I am confused. I thought baseball teams had 25 players on them, now I find out they have up to 40 but not really, until September, and who knows who will be at Spring Training... I know a lot about baseball but this is all stuff that I just didn't know about, and still don't. So how does the game handle it? If I call up for Spring, are they on a Major League contract/use option years when I send them back down?

Please help me find a place where rosters are explained...

Basically, it's a 25-man "active" roster and a 40-man "expanded" roster. In OOTP14, everybody on your 40-man roster will be on your Spring Training roster (there are no non-roster invites, but those will be included in OOTP15). The active roster must be down to 25 by Opening Day. Additionally, players on the 40-man roster are not exposed to the Rule 5 draft

Players with minor-league contracts are subject to option years, so anybody who is out of options will need to clear waivers before they can be demoted to the minors at the end of spring training. This is the same as it is in real life.

Wikipedia has a good run-down of the various real-life roster rules:

I'm not sure if OOTP deals with the 26th player that teams are allowed to call up for scheduled doubleheaders, although I don't think it does.
