are the "stars" in stone?

Greetings Baseball Execs. Re: the players' ability, listed in yellow stars...followed by their "potential" in grey stars.

If a starting pitcher has a potential two star rating...is it possible for that pitcher to "surprise" the scout by exceeding normal two star productivity, or is the player doomed to never rise above two stars?

I am wondering if minor league pitching coaches may impact this, or it's not worth trying.

Thanks for whatever advice you can give from your experience. I appreciate it.

The stars are just a very rough guide to player ability. It's not only possible but even probable that players will perform better or worse than their star ratings would indicate.

Lukas is right, but I think he's understating his point. Player potential is a VERY rough at-a-glance prediction.

It is EXACTLY the same as looking at an MLB yearbook (I'll use The Sporting News for example) that predicts player and prospect stats for the upcoming year(s). It will never be accurate and will often be very wrong despite offering a valid guess that many agree with at the time The Sporting News published their guess. When looking back at that old Sporting News yearbooks's prediction, it is usually quite funny seeing how much different the players turned out to be.

Think of the stars (both actual and potential) being like that quick overview guess. Teams don't win on paper and there's always loads of players that exceed or fall short of expectations. That's the case with the star ratings. Gotta play it out to see how everyone does.

I had a 16th round draft pick win the triple crown and plenty of guys looking like sure-fire HOFers blow out an arm at 24 yrs old only to spend their career as a mop-up reliever.

Like real life, anything can and will happen in OOTP. Let the stars be a guide...just don't be surprised when you get surprised ;-)
