Ottawa Senators - Rebuilding

Just got the game today, and figured I would jump head first into it. I have played EHM 2007 so I am somewhat familiar with hockey sims. I decided to GM my favourite team, the Ottawa Senators.

Offseason:

Trades

Ottawa traded Craig Anderson to Toronto for James Riemer.
Ottawa traded Jean-Gabriel Pageau, 2014 4th Round Pick to Calgary for G Joey McDonald and 2014 5th Round Pick

Free Agent Signings

G - Clark Anderson (22 year old) - 2 yrs (Two way contract)
Year 1 - $600,000 (NHL) $109,000 (Minor)
Year 2 - $600,000 (NHL) $109,000 (Minor)

LD - Trey Lewis (20 years old) - 3 yrs (Entry Level Contract)

G- Jose Theodore (37 years old) - 1 year (Standard NHL Contract)
- $2,060,000

Re signings

G - Robin Lehner (22 years old) 4 year contract (Standard NHL Contract)
Year 1 - $1,750,000
Year 2 - $1,850,000
Year 3 - $2,050,000
Year 4 - $2,550,000

*When I traded Anderson for Riemer, I envisioned a Riemer/Lehner duo. I offered Riemer the same contract I offered Lehner's re signing contract. But Riemer decided to see if he can get offer sheeted. So I signed Theodore and traded for McDonald.

About to start my season.

I probably got boned on these trades but it's a learning curve.

Capital Bunzs

James Reimer gets traded to Edmonton

Reimer made it known that he won't be signing any contract extension with the Ottawa Senators. GM Beauchamp has been hard on the phones, trying to find a dance partner. But since Reimer is an impending RFA this offseason, there wasn't any urgency to trade him.

"Obviously, we would have liked to sign James to an extension. I believe with (Robin) Lehner, they would have made a good duo," Ryan remarked on Tuesday night. "Even if we didn't trade him, we had the option of waiting it out and see if anyone would have offer sheeted him."

But that wasn't the case. Ottawa found a dance partner in Craig MacTavish, who was reportedly interested in Jason Spezza. Edmonton trades 21 year old Tyler Bunz.

"James is a great goaltender, who has a connection with Dallas Eakins," MacTavish said.

In addition, MacTavish finally breaks the silence on the rumors about Spezza becoming an Oiler.

"Like any other GM, I've inquired about the services of Jason Spezza," he remarks. "But the asking price was a little to high for me. They wanted Jordan Eberle, Darnell Nurse, and Anton Lander."

BREAKING NEWS:

@NHlInsder Rumors have it that Spezza has been traded. Updates to follow

@NHLtrades Spezza dealt to the Avalanche. Information still coming in.

@Sensofficial Spezza for RD Tyson Barrie, LD Ryan Wilson, and RW Steve Downie

@Sensofficial Unrelated trade with @Coyotes - Stephane Da Costa for 2014 2nd round pick.

So Riemer's not on the team then? I'm still a bit fuzzy on how NHL contracts work.

He was, but at the same time, I didn't play him. If he wants to get offer sheeted before playing a game with us, he can ride the bench :P

Ahh.. okay. Now I get it. So what are you going to do with him? Try to move him? Craig Anderson's not looking too bad right now.

Though a Lehner/Theodore combination doesn't look too bad either.
