Main stats YOU use to decide on your rotation?

So I have been playing for a few months now but I have a conundrum. I have a potential of 7 players vying for a spot in my rotation and by ratings only a couple separate themselves from the pack and even then one of them had my worst ERA on the team last season by far. So I compiled a list of things like ERA, WHIP, BABIP, HR/9, BB/9, K/9 FIP and VORP. I then marked the worst scores in each category and didn't really get any close to making a decision so I am curious as to what you guys base your decision on?

I use WHIP and the rate stats (H/9, BB/9, K/9, etc). If those are more or less even, I go with the guy with more pitches or stamina, or would one guy better suited for bullpen work than the other. If that's all still relatively even, I go with service time. Is one guy out of options?

a few of the players still have options but I also have guys soon to be ready in the minors maybe towards the end of the season and I was thinking of trying to trade the pitcher I least want to improve elsewhere.

I've compared the numbers and nobody really truly stands out as the worst. I just did it in a spreadsheet with the type of stats you mentioned that weren't subjective but just pure numbers and assigned point values, 5 points for best, 4th for second best etc... and one guy stood out as "the worst" but also is the only one making league minimum as the last season was essentially his first full year.

And then remember there's an element of chance and luck involved. A slightly better rated player may have an off year and a slightly poorer rated player may have a good year. That's baseball and that's why we watch and adjust as the season progresses.

Oh ya I definitely try to look and see if that is what happened in any of the situations, nothing drastic that I noticed.

I use W-L record becaue that tells me who wins games. I could care less about all the other nonsense stats. Who wins wins. That's what matters, right?

On a serious note, I look at all the stats to get the big picture but, for me, groundball percentage and defense at pitching is huge because I focus on defense at all infield positions. I sacrifice power & slugging % at all positions in order to prevent runs. I build my team around defense, pitching, speed (but not stealing), and OBP.

It's a lot cheaper than power.

WHIP and BABIP are your friends. K/9 is useful in conjunction with GB% to determine how much solid contact opponents tend to make. ERA should only be considered if the number is extremely high or extremely low. Anything in the 3-5 range is effectively interchangeable, based on the other stats.

FIP and stamina. and I have no problem having a great pitcher in bullpen.. my pen actually always is top 3 in league... no proven closer TM

First off thanks for all the input guys, also just wanted to ask Fyrestorm directly what do you see when you look at BABIP? I play as the Rockies and all my pitchers BABIP's are high plus most things I have read is that batters have more control over their BABIP then pitchers, in other words a pitchers BABIP is mostly based on luck + strength of defense the pitcher themselves have very little control over it.

I always look at BABIP to see if the other number are inflated or deflated because of defense and luck. For me it is the stat that provides context for most of the other stats.

1) Scouts on?
2) Accuracy?

I know you are asking stats but I use ratings more than stats because I don't use scouts.
