I wondered this myself, but since the explanation "walks plus inninings pitched" I think the lower the WHIP number, the more of a "power pitcher" you have. For instance, if you have a pitcher with a sub 1.00 WHIP, then generally he's a fireballer who walks less than one batter per inning he pitched. Like Roger Clemens, Curt Shilling or Randy Johnson. Power pitchers, ya know?

Not necessarily. I have a relief pitcher that has consistently put up sub-1.00 WHIPs, but he's hardly a power pitcher. He strikes out a reasonable amount, but he doesn't throw hard at all. He has a low WHIP because he gives up less hits than IP and he walks extremely low amounts of batters. Like in the single digits in over 80 IP. It helps a lot if a pitcher strikes guys out because that means less contact and most likely less hits, but it's not necessarily the mark of a power pitcher. It's the mark of an effective pitcher.

i don't know that it necessarily denotes a power pitcher. I would think a low WHIP is simply produced by keeping runners off of the bases. A pitcher with good control and good stuff should produce a nice WHIP regardless of velocity or strikeout counts.

I apoligize if I'm was wrong on this one. Is WHIP an officially counted stat? If anyone can point a website that counts it as a stat for pitchers that would be cool.

A low WHIP means they don't let that many runners on base.
WHIP is a very good stat for determining how good a pitcher is.

WHIP is a very important stat for the girls you date in manager mode.

A good WHIP rating does not make a good power pitcher..it basically is the stat that determines how many walks and hits a pitcher gives up per innings pitched.
