FOrmer SOM Player, considering OOTP
Does the game allow you to do drafting of all players from all seasons? So I could draft George Brett 1980 and Frank Thomas 1994 to be on the same team?
I limited in the number of teams per league? Are there playoffs automatically after the end of the regular season or do I need to make a separate league for that? Thanks in advance! |

Brett, I too am an SOM player (C&D) and I use OOTP to do computerized strat stuff, like building a league with all teams in the 42 Old-Timers' set. I can answer your question and I will send you a PM when I get on my computer.

What in the name of electronic baseball is SOM and why would anyone play any computer-based baseball game except OOTP?

Strat-O-Matic. Started as a card game.

I've only played the card version of Strat, not the computer version. Great deal of fun, but takes WAY longer than OOTP. Forget replaying an entire season, unless you have more time on your hands than God himself, or at least are much better at time management than I am!

It is still a card game. Yes there is a computer version, but I can't see any reason to play it when OOTP is available. BUt for face-to-face, Strat is great. I am in a keeper league that has been running for something like 35 years now...

I think that is one of the best compliments you can give Markus and Co. OOTP has come such a long way when it comes to historical play. I think with a little more attention, this game could really attract more and more of the replay crowd, but I'm not entirely sure that's a direction the game wants to go.

Echoing David Watts contribution.
This is the only game I've replayed to reply historical baseball since 2003. |

Other option is to manually import players either one at a time or using a notepad txt. You can import players from any year. I have a team of my top 25 favorite players. i import them all from their rookie year. Players like Thomas, Maddux, Farnsworth, Bart Johnson, Joey Cora, Baines, etc. In my main league I import real players and turn them into clones which cancels out how they are recalculated and has them develop more like a fictional player and then I rename them. On my last RD league I had 36 yr old Rajah, 22 yo Say Hey Kid, 25 yr old Yankee Clipper, 31 yr old Konerko & 25 yr old Big Train to name a few. i used a cistom database that had negro league players, ***. PCL and others in it. 1st Ammy draft had Satchel Paige, Buck Leonard, Jack McDowell, Sam McDowell & Corey Patterson.
