How to edit the injury file?

Thought maybe this would get them most looks here

I wanted to add 'death/career enders' for deadball/early baseball

Such as Bright's Disease,suicide

And I cannot find the FAQ to add injuries to the injury.txt file, and the header is a jumbled mess.

Could someone point me in the right direction? Or give me an easy run down?

Thank you

If you can just decode the header, all the information you need is there. I don't have a copy of the file here at the moment, but if you can paste the header here, I can help with anything you have questions about. Probably the easiest thing to do is to find an 'injury' already in the file which is most closely comparable to the injury you're trying to create. Copy/paste the line, rename the 'injury', and change the injury time to whatever you like.

There's no way to make an injury automatically career ending, incidentally. You can only specify whether an injury has the potential to end a career. From the way the game selects injuries from the injury db, there's no way to create injuries like 'player dies'. You can't even do this by creating an injury with a 1000 year injury duration. The problem is that the game decides the duration of an injury first, then looks at the file for a suitable candidate injury. So if you create an injury in the injury database with too long a minimum duration, the game will simply never use it at all.

At least that's how things worked two or three versions ago, but I have no reason to think anything has changed.

If you open the injuries.txt file in a spreadsheet (which in my opinion is the best way to edit it), it won't be so jumbled and you can easily figure out what the headings mean as they're pretty much self explanatory. You can change the .txt to .csv if you have probs. opening it.

Great Advice

I changed the file to .csv made my changes as it was all thing in the headers
Suicide would be

365,455(highest you can go),0,1(career ending likely),0,0,0,0,1,4,suicide,suicide,1

Saved it and changed the file format back to .txt in right click-->rename so hopefully no errors

Yep, now I hope it really IS rare

Like once in 10 years type of rare

I have
Suicide
Homicide
Bright's Disease
Cancer
Brain tumor
Car accident
Tuberculosis
Alcohol poisioning
Lead poisioning (not career ending, in there for Nap Lajoie)

The top player killers from 1871-1960
I simply overwrite their history from retirement to whatever happened and re write the news article

Now if only the AI didn't make them coaches w/o notifying me

The injury file will enable this to happen.

But ... you may want to consider having the Storylines engine handle this. As any of those events should trigger a newspaper story along with the event. In fact, it should trigger several stories over the period several days as news gradually comes out --why did he commit suicide? were there underlying medical/mental issues? has the family made a statement?

Look at Paul Oliver's suicide from the San Diego Chargers as a base from which to model. How many real newspaper articles came from it? Over how long a period of time?

The problem is that the Storylines file is a lot harder to work with. I've messed around with it without success. Yeah, I could a single story to run, but not quite the extended, season-long ones I was hoping -- ie. persistant rumors of steroids, owner/manager infighting, performance loss due to dating Madonna and joining Kabbalah. There is precious little documentation on how to edit the Storylines.

Bright's Disease caught my eye. My great grandmother died of Bright's Disease in 1878.

From what I read, seems it was related to Diabetes and was a horribly painful death

Jimmy Sebring and Ross Youngs are the notable deaths but Ty Cobb also had it

I have to change the file in the 20's as it seems plane crashes started in 1925 as the primary cause of death

I also need to add Menigitis (Addie Joss type scenario) and Hit by pitch (Ray Chapman,John Dodge scenario)

Can I overwrite HBP death so that it doesn't happen after 1920? Yet still retain the news story that a player was killed by a pitch? Or should I zero it out in the file?

It's actually kidney failure or clinically Nephritis. It was common in Diabetics probably due to issues with blood chemistry.

I'll give you another one Encephalitis Lethargica. It was epidemic in Europe UK and the US from 1919-1930 but overshadowed by the big flu.
