Undefeated Starting Pitcher - 162 Game Season

Even on a stacked team with an above average defense (4th in EFF), I was really excited to get this final result from my ace on my 2020 Red Sox team.

I even risked the status (and my ALDS rotation order) to let him get his 28th win in Game 162. I'm trying to rack up individual performances in my current league, and this is exactly the kind of notable thing I've been hoping to find, at least until I've played long enough to groom some HOFers.

What is that, ten losses in his 120 major league starts? Impressive.

What was your team record? Back in the Ootp 7 days I had a Randy Johnson like pitcher win 28 games on a 130 win team. He actually lost a couple though and he only spent two years on my team before retiring.

Yep. It wasn't actually the most dominant of the teams Knight has played on, he just happened to have his best season while the offense just happened to bail him out at just the right times. Or, I just happened to pull him at just the right times. I resisted the urge to be overly twitchy about taking him out with a lead early in games to ensure that he could not take a loss, he stayed undefeated on his own merits, and those of his teammates.

I have never had an undefeated pitcher. I have had 3 30-2 guys, including Kyp Durron and one 21-2 guy.

I had a guy go 30-0 in a 162 game season once. Of course, the team went 150-12, so...

A little experiment to see how dominant edits could make a team. Answer: Pretty damned. All the records got fouled up from that one, though, so no photographic evidence exists.

1st in the AL, 2nd overall in MLB. Only Kershaw's 8.4 in the NL was better. This is a league that I started in OOTP13, so with all those draft classes the talent level of the league is pretty high. His FIP was also 3.28, so he got some help from the defense.

I once did a historical sim where one pitcher went 20-0 in one season.

That was also the sim where Curt Schilling had 8,000 strikeouts.

We had a guy in the PEBA go 23-0 in an online league (even more amazing). Team won 106 games and didn't even win their division.

Best I had was Paul Hoffsteiter a PCL guy who was picked up by the St. Louis Browns (they won 2 World Series in a row, go figure)

He went 22-2 and 18-3 and even when the Browns started going downhill, he would have an amazing Spud Chandler W% 17-4, 16-2

Irrelevant is an exaggeration. They just aren't the most important stat, like they used to be.

In my own league the Houston Astros had a starting pitcher who while very good, was hardly a top 5 pitcher in the league. But he started his first 20 games going 17-0 with a sub 2 ERA (early 90s era stats) pitching like a mad man then got hurt for the season. First start of the next season he lost.

Yeah, I definitely use FIP, WHIP, BABIP, and K/9 to evaluate my pitchers for roster decisions instead of W-L records, but there's still a certain mystique to getting 20 wins (or 30 someday!), an undefeated season, a batter hitting .300 instead of .299, and so on. That's before getting to long hitting streaks or hitting .400. I know AVG is more or less a useless way to evaluate hitters, but there's still a certain attraction to hitting milestone in that otherwise minimally useful stat.
