Non-tenders

Instead of automatically renewing every single player who's signed at league minimum (and having to pay the salary if we release them), allow us the option at the end of the season to non-tender players. Just have a list with checkboxes, checked by default, and only the checked players will get renewed.

Tendering and non tendering are arbitration eligible terminology so it may not apply to auto renewal. If you remove players from the 40-man roster they will not get renewed automatically.

How is it done IRL?

A team has the option to just decline to offer the player a contract, making him a free agent, even if they have the right to renew him at league minimum.

As an example, OOTP allows us to offer a player $0 in arbitration, which is declining to offer him a contract and sending him to free agency. I'd basically like to be able to do the exact same thing with non-arb eligible players, without having to deal with DFA'ing players.

I just do a massive purge at the end of the playoffs and before the offseason that way they have not been resigned yet.

I'm pretty aggressive with the waive + DFA to keep everyone possible in the minors, but this is more a realism/accuracy thing for me. I should have the ability to do that, exactly like a current major league team does, but I don't.

i'm trying to see examples how it happens in RL. all non-tender i can find are arbitration eligible players.

i did find guys Outrighted to minors in October, but this would likely require them going through waivers first.

In real life, non-tendering major league players (i.e. those on the 40-man roster) occurs on December 2nd. Over the years that date has gradually gotten closer to the end of the season. In earlier years, the date was Feb. 15th, before being moved to Feb. 1st, then Jan. 15th, and then various dates in December.

For players under their initial minor league contract, the renewal happens from March 1st through March 10th. This timing hasn't changed.

i guess all the cases of guys on minimum salary i looked into were already outrighted or released by that point, this is why i couldn't find one.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure at the end of the season (before free agents file), those with contracts under auto-renew and arbitration eligible players can be released without penalty in the game?

As I was reading through, I was going to say this. It's spot on and works well, you can also do this for your arbitration eligible players too.

for arbitration players, i would actually recommend you use the arbitration page, and enter $0 as a way to remove the player.

the results between that and releasing are the same, however players don't seem to hold a grudge is you just offer $0 through arbitration, if case you want to sign them later when they don't get anything in FA by the end of the off-season

Solid point there, but if you need to clear a roster spot, you could just let him go

White Sox Re-Sign Dylan Axelrod: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Per this entry at mlbtraderumors.com, Dylan Axelrod was non-tendered before he was arbitration eligible and subsequently resigned to a minor league deal.
