March 1914

Calvin Brock 29-2 (23) vs Matt Skelton 28-5-1 (24)

Calvin continued to surge, out-boxing Skelton for two rounds before dropping him early in the third with a hook and then pouring it on until the ref stepped in. He has secured a long deserved title shot against Tony Thompson in May.

Seth Mitchell 49-9 (41) vs Fabio Maldonado 33-3 (25)

A slow opening round gave way to a brawl in the second when Fabio staggered Seth twice with right hands only to catch a counter hook that hurt him in the waning moments. Mitchell capitalized in the third, dropping Maldonado early with a combo and then twice more with right hands for the automatic stoppage.

Tommy Zbikowski 42-9 (26) vs Vladimir Virchis 19-2 (15)

Virchis was able to work more consistently and hold his own in violent toe to toe rounds like the fourth(17-15), sixth (15-19) & seventh(20-16) that had the crowd going crazy. Zbikowski faded a bit down the stretch and Vladimir pulled out the important UD. 93-97 & 94-97 x2

David Rodriguez 22-0 (21) vs Vinny Maddalone 18-2-1 (12)

Vinny looked prime for an upset when he hurt David with an uppercut in round five and busted open Rodriguez left eye in the sixth with a right hand. Rodriguez remained composed and he floored Vinny with a right hand in round eight and went on to take the UD. 98-92, 97-93 & 96-94

Derek Bryant 16-0-1 (10) vs Justin Whitehead 41-18-2 (16)

Bryant looked very impressive, flooring the veteran Aussie twice in the opening round before he knocked him out cold in the second with a three punch combo.

Ray Austin 20-0 (16) vs Emilio Zarate 34-20-2 (14)

After a slow opening round, Zarate scored with a couple nice hooks in round two before he inexplicably drilled Austin with a brutal uppercut South of the border and he was promptly disqualified

Ismael Kone 16-0-1 (5) vs John Turlington 15-19-5 (8)

Kone dropped Turlington late in the first with a right hand and quickly put him down for the count in round two after a sharp hook.

Audley Harrison 22-3 (20) vs Mariusz Wach 27-13-2 (17)

Harrison boxed very well in the early going, using a strong right jab to set up left hands that had Wach's right eye swelling by the end of round four. In the sixth, Audley dropped him twice with left hands and then three more times in round eight for a dominant victory.

Steve Cunningham 25-1 (5) vs Kubrat Pulev 49-12-1 (23)

Cunningham used his jab to keep Pulev on the outside and he tossed in enough right hands to keep the Bulgarian honest. 'USS' was just too quick and disciplined and that led him to the wide UD win. 99-91 x3. After the bout Pulev announced that it would be the last fight of his sterling career.

(WC) Mike Perez 52-10-3 (35) vs Mark De Mori 36-7-3 (15)
(3rd Defense)

Rematch: D12

The scene shifted to Cuba, but the fight was once again nip and tuck. Perez staggered the challenger in the fourth with a 3 punch combo and Mark rocked the champion in the sixth with 3 strong right hands. Other than that, every round was tightly contested in the first half.

Both men tired over the second half and the action slowed to a crawl. The rounds were still competitive, but the greater skill of Perez showed and he won a UD. 117-113, 116-113 & 115-113

Marco Huck 33-7-2 (22) vs DaVarryl Williamson 25-3 (23)

DaVarryl dropped Huck in the opening round with a right hand and his power allowed him to forge an early lead. The second half of the fight was a different tale as the German scored with his own clubbing right hands that busted open Williamson's left eye and Marco scored a dramatic knockdown in the tenth round with three seconds remaining that helped him secure a draw. 95-93 & 94-94 x2

Luis Ortiz 46-11-2 (26) vs Hector Ferrevro 22-7-1 (14)

The red hot Ferrevro got a shot under the bright lights and Ortiz vanquished him with impunity, dropping Hector with a cross a minute into the fight and pounding Ferrevro until the ref stepped in late in round one.

Sinan Samil Sam 20-0-1 (9) vs Edmund Gerber 43-11-3 (22)

The landscape of the division continued to feature changing of the guard as Sam dropped Gerber twice in round two and again in round nine on his way to a tidy UD. 99-89, 98-90 & 97-91

Derek Bryant 17-0-1 (11) vs Travis Walker 33-7 (26)

Travis staggered Bryant with a hook in the second round but Derek rebounded by flooring Walker in round four. After a dominant fifth by Bryant, Travis started penetrating his southpaw stance with lead right hands that bloodied and swelled up Bryant's left eye, then in round nine a sizzling left cross dropped Travis for a nine count and Bryant went on to win the UD. 96-92, 95-93 & 95-94

Alonzo Butler 22-0-1 (20) vs Jean-Francois Bergeron 17-1 (5)

Bergeron exhibited a stiff jab and good survival instincts, but Butler's more powerful blows caught the judges eye enough to garner him a UD in a bout where their styles just didn't mesh. 97-94, 96-94 & 96-95

Faruq Saleem 17-0 (11) vs Edgars Kalnars 15-9-1 (7)

Saleem dropped Edgars early in the opening round with a hook and a minute later he put him down for the count with a nasty combo.

Ismael Kone 17-0-1 (6) vs Markus Tomala 46-16-1 (26)

Kone dropped Tomala with hooks in rounds three and four and survived a late rally by Markus to earn the UD. 97-92 x2 & 96-93

Tomasz Adamek 16-1-1 (13) vs Albert Sosnowski 16-1 (11)

This was a huge match up in Poland and it turned into a war. Adamek controlled the early going with movement and combos, but his larger foe staggered him with a right in round four and Sosnowski sent him down for a seven count with another right hand in the fifth.

Adamek looked up against it in the next two rounds, struggling to get past the larger mans power shots. In the eighth Tomasz rocked him with a right hand and closed the stanza flurrying with Albert pinned on the ropes. Sosnowski showed grit and came back to take round nine. Feeling desperate, Adamek delivered in the final round; flooring Sosnowski with a right hand and then hammering away with both limbs until Albert began to sag down the ropes and the ref stepped in with one second left in a fight that Sosnowski was ahead on all 3 cards by 3 points. That was awesome.

(IBO) Tony Thompson 28-0-1 (17) vs Calvin Brock 30-2 (24)
(6th Defense)

After a feeling out opening round without much to report, 'The Tiger' connected with a short uppercut early in round two that buckled Brock's legs and Thompson opened up a can of whoops ass, firing uppercuts from both wings and left hands and short right hooks that left Calvin utterly defenseless and forced the referee's hand. Tony jumped up on the turnbuckle and pounded his chest. He also pulled no punches in the post-fight interview saying he was the best Heavyweight in the world and he was immediately relinquishing his IBO title to issue a challenge to either Mike Perez or David Haye to settle things in the ring!

Seth Mitchell 50-9 (42) vs Luis Ortiz 47-11-2 (27)

I was shocked to see that these two had never met. Better late than never and Ortiz made up for lost time with a strong opening round that saw him wobble Seth with a right uppercut. they traded heavily in the second but a right hand opened a nasty gash under the Cubans left eye and Mitchell hammered him with right hands over a dominant final minute.

The war waged on in the third when Seth staggered Luis with a right hand, Ortiz fired back and they went toe to toe until Mitchell dropped a right hand flush on Ortiz' chin and Luis promptly fired back with a wild right and left that tagged Seth flush and put him flat on his back for the count.

Magomed Abdusalamov 47-9-2 (34) vs Steve Cunningham 26-1 (5)

Cunningham used his superior speed and skills to navigate the bull rushing Russian in the early going, staggering Magomed in the third with a hard hook. Abdusalamov patiently closed the distance and he floored USS in the sixth with a punishing hook. They traded violently over the second half of the bout but Magomed's huge edge in power led him to the UD. 116-113 x2 & 115-113

Tyson Fury 38-9-6 (26) vs Chazz Witherspoon 38-6-2 (26)

Witherspoon looked destructive, hurting Tyson in the opening round with hooks that ballooned his right eye and then he dropped him with a right early in the second before unloading with both hands until the ref stepped in.

Martin Rogan 33-6-1 (19) vs Audley Harrison 23-3 (21)

Near the end of a feeling out opening round, Audley dumped Rogan on the seat of his pants with a straight left hand. Harrison was dominant in the second with hard jabs and left hands but a flurry from martin late in the stanza produced a nasty gash over the Brit's left eye.

His corner closed the cut, but after a slow third Rogan stunned Harrison with an overhand right early in the fourth and dropped him later in the round for a five count courtesy of an uppercut. Audley looked unsteady entering the fifth and martin exploded with a right hand that drove Harrison into the ropes, Rogan was digging in with both hands when harrison unleashed a vicious uppercut that put Rogan down for the count for a thrilling victory for the enigma that is the 'A Force'. Audley earned a shot at the vacant IBO title against Luis Ortiz in August.

Ray Austin 21-0 (16) vs Garret Simon 42-18-2 (24)

The shopworn Simon started well and he dropped Austin for a five count in round three, ray regrouped and returned the favor in round five with a brutal right hand. Austin used his jab over the second half of the fight and secured a tougher than expected UD. 98-92, 96-93 & 95-94

Faruq Saleem 18-0 (12) vs Eric Fields 37-12-3 (24)

This bout was abysmal, but the aging Fields was more active and he snatched away Saleem's '0' with a UD. 94-97 x2 & 95-96. While the bout wasn't good, Eric decided to go out on a high note and he announced his retirement in the ring.

Nice move by Thompson going after Haye/Perez .

Some great wins by some of the veterans. Perez, Huck, Ortiz and Abdusalamov.

Harrison-Ortiz, that's a tough call.

I was going to do a Ortiz/magomed rematch, but I figured Audley got himself into enough position by beating a top 15 guy in a war.

(WBO) David Haye 30-0-2 (19) vs Chazz Witherspoon 39-6-2 (27)
(8th Defense)

Another challenger struggled to provide Haye with a stern challenge as his speed and movement befuddled Witherspoon until Chazz tired and then david moved in with powerful combinations. He dropped Spoon early in the twelfth with a hook and then moments later with a right hand for a nine count, it only took two right hands for the ref to step in and end the one sided contest and Haye tied the all time record for title defenses.

Chris Arreola 33-5-1 (28) vs Dereck Chisora 36-10-5 (23)

Chisora took the fight to Chris in the opening round, scoring with chopping right hands and banging to the body. Early in the second an uppercut staggered Dereck and Arreola took advantage with an onslaught of right hands and uppercuts that forced the ref to intervene and put Arreola back in the title picture.

Sinan Samil Sam 21-0-1 (9) vs Dominick Guinn 23-2-1 (10)

Two of the young guns met and it was an entertaining affair, Guinn had a big speed advantage and he used it to build an early lead. Dominick didn't let his hands go enough and the tenacity of Samil began to take over as he forced Guinn to the ropes and worked the body. Dominick climbed off of the deck in round nine and mounted a late rally in the final three rounds that fell just short as Samil won a tight SD. 114-113 x2 & 113-114

Alonzo Butler 23-0-1 (20) vs Thomas Hayes 27-5 (15)

The streaking Hayes came in the winner of ten in a row and he gave the unbeaten Butler a war. Hayes right hand had Alonzo's left eye swelling by the end of round three, but in the fourth and fifth Butler slammed Thomas' body with crushing hooks and snapped back his head with uppercuts to the head.

After a toe to toe seventh round(15-16), Butler found himself on the canvas courtesy of a huge right hand from Hayes, he got up at eight but Thomas dominated round nine and both had little left in the final frame. Two of the judges left Butler with his '0' and sent Hayes home gravely disappointed. 97-92, 94-95 & 96-93

David Rodriguez 23-0 (21) vs Solomon Haumano 26-5-1 (15)

Rodriguez controlled Haumano with huge right hands that closed his left eye and floored him three times, but Solomon refused to be stopped and stuck around to hear the judges announce David the UD winner. 99-89 x3

Ismael Kone 18-0-1 (6) vs Jason Campbell 42-17-3 (18)

Kone fell in love with his new found power and he landed two hard right hands before walking into a flush hook from Jason that put Ismael flat on his back for the ten count.

Denis Boytsov 37-5-1 (25) vs Vladimir Virchis 20-2 (15)

Virchis' jabs and hooks had Boytsov's right eye badly swollen after two rounds. In the third Boytsov staggered Vladimir with a right hand early in the third and unloaded with bomb after bomb in one of the largest scores I've ever seen without a KD(35-3). Virchis rebounded and they went toe to toe, round after round with both of Denis' eyes swollen when a right hand floored Boytsov in round eight. the pace understandably stalled in the last two rounds and Virchis emerged with a grueling SD. 92-95 x2 & 95-94

Tye Fields 22-1 (17) vs Samuel Peter 26-7-1 (19)

The underachieving Peter stunned Fields with right hands in each of the first two rounds before settling into a grappling contest that flattered neither man. Just when a decision seemed a certainty, Sam unloaded a massive overhand right in round nine that face planted his gigantic rival for the ten count.

July 1914

(WC) Mike Perez 53-10-3 (35) vs Tony Thompson 29-0-1 (18)
(4th Defense)

After a slow opening round Perez tagged the challenger with several hard combinations in the second round. In round three Thompson dropped the champion for a five count with a nasty uppercut and he opened a gash over the Cubans right eye with another uppercut in round four. Mike took the fifth and was controlling round six until a short hook from 'The Tiger' floored Perez for another five count late in the round.

Thompson dropped the champ for the third time early in round seven with a hook and pounded Perez until the ref stepped in and called a halt. Tony minced no words after the fight, specifically telling David haye to man up now that he had three belts to Haye's one.

Sultan Ibragimov 31-2-1 (21) vs Shane Cameron 33-5 (21)

Ibragimov floored Cameron in the second and seventh rounds with left hands and kept the Aussie at bay with hard jabs that ballooned his left eye and despite the judges having it closer than it looked, Sultan took the clear UD. 116-108 & 115-109 x2

Robert Helenius 44-13 (30) vs Eddie Chambers 25-2-1 (11)

A huge right hand dropped Eddie for a five count in round two, but Chambers immediately responded by dominating the third and flooring Robert in the fourth with a counter hook. Despite a swollen left eye, Chambers busted open Robert's nose and boxed his way to a convincing UD over his much larger foe. 115-112 & 116-111 x2

Tomasz Adamek 17-1-1 (14) vs JD Chapman 28-5 (21)

On the heels of a war with Albert Sosnowski, Adamek used his Boxing skills to make for an entertaining, but less brutal bout, flooring Chapman with a right in
round eight on the way to a UD. 97-92 x2 & 96-94

Derek Bryant 18-0-1 (11) vs Carl Davis Drumond 39-9-1 (22)

The often lackadaisical Drumond, showed up in full force and used hard right hands to keep the formerly unbeaten Bryant at bay and win a crucial UD. 97-93 x3
