GM Contracts
So this already exists in Franchise Hockey Manager, and I really like it so I thought it would be good to have in OOTP 15. Basically, when a team signs you as their GM, they sign you to a contract that lasts for a certain number of years. You can negotiate the length with the team. When your contract is set to expire, the team can offer you an extension, or let you go into free agency, and you will be free to negotiate contracts with other teams.

If, like everything else in this game, it was optional, then I'm all for it.
What if you could also, during "negotiations" somehow tell the AI what you were planning for your first 2-3 years. For example, if I was Sandy Alderson coming into the Mets situation after 2010, I'd tell the AI "rebuilding. patience." instead of if I was coming into the, say... Red Sox/Cardinals/Yankees/Dodgers situation, which would be "Win now. no patience"

Back in the older days of OOTP we had that from when I started in OOTP 5 to 6.5 but when we moved to 7 that was taken out, now in manager mode you could never be come a commissioner and edit something that wasn't working with out retiring (there was a program that you could use but not every body did) and starting again, if there is away to include this plus that teams offered you extensions and you could decline and move to a new team but still have power to be editor maybe with a cost or something attached I would be very interested in this feature.

Just spotted this thread when searching for a topic I was going to post.
Count me in on adding a little depth to the GM/Coaching role and the idea of a contract of some sort. Years would be great, money relative to the finances you have set up for the league would be cool too. I LOVE the idea of also being able to identify how you plan to conduct yourself over the contract as GM, so that you're not blown out during an obvious rebuild situation. An additional idea along those lines might be to rely more heavily on your selection of where the team is during a year - Rebuild - Normal - Win Now! Rebuild should obviously allow you some more time (pending your OWNER of course). But also pay heavily if your selection is clearly not what you are actually doing on where you should be in the life of your franchise, leading to an even more irate owner and higher chance to be fired before the end of your contract. And, if you don't mind me expanding on this concept mid-thread, I would truly love the idea of also having some similar mechanism, optional of course, included in the ONLINE game! I think it would really take OOTP online to another level if the game could evaluate and fire GM/Coaches, then offer or decide contracts from the existing pool OR have current GM/Coaches have the ability to apply for a position with an open team. It would counter the GM-for-life effect in online leagues and maybe add some spice to the game if you have to start a new job (whether your team is a perennial champion that falls on a season or two of tough times OR you want to move to a better team OR if you simply get booted and want to possibly move to a rebuild situation to test your skills all over again). |

It could be a fun option, but the money they pay you has to show up in the budget somewhere so who is going to play hardball with the team at the expense of money you could use for player contracts or other things?
What would be better is if you could renegotiate at the end of your contract not for your money, but for your budget. If I've made the playoffs each of the last five years and my skin flint of a owner is still giving me bottom third money I want to be able to tell the cheap skate to open his wallet or else I am walking. That would be an awesome option. |
