But, if you can get yourself a world series win in the first few seasons (especially for a team like Seattle) you probably consider it worth it.
Just ONE world series win will never be enough to make a disgusting contract like Cano got worth it. I know world series wins are hard to come by but you better hope for at least a few WS wins in the first half of the deal. But just one? Nah. You're better off by taking that money and spreading it out filling your most critical needs.

All this would be solved by a hard cap and a salary floor, but good luck ever seeing that.

I'm so glad MLB doesn't have a salary cap. Look at how boring NBA, NHL, and NFL trades have become since those leagues got a cap. No thank you. Luxury Tax? Sure. Revenue Sharing? Absolutely. But death before a salary cap.

To be honest, if there was no salary cap, the $1 billion Leafs(and the rest of the Original Six) would completely dominate the sport.

I think it is amazing to look at the difference in contracts from the late 90's and early 2000's until now. Roger Clemens who was a once in a generation pitcher signed a contract for 4yr/40m in 1998. Imagine what he would get in todays market . Off topic from the thread title, but just something that Cano's contract made me think about.

What would that resolve? In NBA and NFL you still have players complaining about not getting respect, and you still have players not paid according to their talent.

Actually it's way worse in NBA and NFL if you look closer. NBA's player salary cap makes all top talents getting the same pay. How is that fair? Look at the quarterback salaries in NFL, and you'll see the correlation to performance is pretty weak.

MLB actually is the best of all three.

C'mon...We're talking about the Leafs and MLSE here. They'd still find a way to screw things up. The Red Wings, Bruins, and Black Hawks are pretty dominant with the cap in place. The Rangers have always spent a lot without getting much bang for the buck, and the Canadiens have a great legacy, but not so much recently.

To get somewhat back to the original topic.... (as much as I like revenue stream flaming)

The OP's fears are all laid to rest with this news, I'm sure:

These signings blow me away. I feel bad for Roberts and his injury problems, but shouldn't a contract for this guy be day to day?

Man, this is a good year for the Yankees to miss the playoffs, because this year's free agent class stinks. Now, all they can do is either get rid of the "championship every year or bust" attitude (they'll NEVER do that), or sign a bunch of AARP members and set their franchise back 20 years (George Steinbrenner would be proud!)

Now, you've got the dreaded "league of logos" smilie. Ugh.

EDIT: How'd you fix it?

EDIT: Never mind. Mine's fixed too. Thanks to whoever corrected that.

I like the movesthe Yanks are making. If everything works out they should be very fast on the base paths and have enough power to be an effective offense.

I didn't like those all or nothing teams of 2010-12. With their homeruns, strikeouts and low batting avg.

Just need a top shelf starter (Tanaka) and im ready for the Year to start.

Will you please go back and read at least my posts to realize that this thread was not started by me over "sour grapes"?

This may be true of other "spoiled" Yankees fans but if you persist in thinking that is what motivated me, then you have missed the point of the thread and I have failed in communicating it. As a matter of fact, as time passes and reality sets in, and having seen (again, for sometimes his lazy approach to the game bothered me in the past) his bad side, I am becoming quite adjusted to Mr. Cano being far, far away in the Pacific Northwest.

I won't compare him to Jeter. That is too obvious and a cliche and frankly I am tired of people thinking Jeter is a paragon of virtue. Although he is kinda cute in a bromanly way.

No, read my post about Curtis Granderson and the way he has handled leaving his former ballclub. Basically, by keeping his mouth shut and taking care of more important matters than talking to the media about how ill-treated he's been.

Nah, you would see the same thing that is happening in the NBA. A bargain rate for a once in a lifetime talent which makes competing with that very difficult.

Lebron James is making 15 million instead of the 30-40 million per year he would bring in on an open market which allowed the Heat to hang on to and sign their other stars.

I dont think any American sport does this right. The NBA really hurts the earning power of their 4-5 biggest stars while MLB is crushing the value of players in their prime by not allowing Free Agency many times until they are past their prime which has teams overpaying for past their prime stars.

NFL is actually decent but I wouldnt want to play that sport with a non guaranteed contract like they do.

I wouldnt blame him at all for having "sour grapes". Id be upset if my team lost one of the best hitters in the league as well. Lets not act like it wouldnt upset everyone here to have one of the best hitters in baseball gone from their favorite team.

Former Red Sox (heck, darn near every FA that leaves their team) has a "phony attitude." Sad but true.

Honestly, I was not bothered in the least that Cano decided to walk away from the Yanks. He never got it.

You want to talk about a lack of respect? A lack of respect is not running it out down the line. Perhaps if he had a little heart and showed a little effort from time to time the Yankees would have made more of an effort to sign him. For a guy who does that, maybe you decide to reward with a 10 year deal, knowing they won't be the same at the end of the deal. A lot of the Yankees letting him walk had to do with his personality, of which he had none.

On another note, Cano got just what he wanted. An extra month off each year.

Have fun in Seattle!
