Roster Sets

I am not new to the game, but I have no idea how to do what I want to do. If it's possible, I'll do it. If not, I'll change up what I plan to do.

I want to reset baseball history. Instead of having two major leagues in 1901, I want there to be four major leagues: AL, NL, PCL, and SA. I want to use REAL players from that era with some fictional players sprinkled in. The catch is that I want ALL players from that era to be available, thus Negro League players and any other players left out of the majors during that time: Cuban players (who else?).

Is this possible? Is there a database I need that has ALL players from history available to me? I can't seem to find anything specific at ootpmods or through search here.

There's nothing like that, sadly. The db with the most non-mlb players in it is Spritze's, but even that still has only a fraction of the Negro League and Cuban guys and only a handful of milb players who never made the majors.

I added the numbers to the Lukasberger post as a FYI. 27,784 players in total.

Having "ALL" players from that era available would not be do-able. But since you are open to using fictional players, if you use Spritze's db, turn off both Retire According to History and Players Miss Seasons Accdg to History, you should be able to have something pretty cool and close to what you want.

As an example, I started a historical league in 1890, pretty much the basic default OOTP historical setup. I left it with just the 16 MLB teams - with reserve rosters - for the first 12 years. Then, for 1903, I added a PCL and Federal League - both of which combine to serve as the Triple A affiliates for MLB, and I also added an independent Union Association (6 teams). I'm currently in 1908 and have had very little trouble stocking teams with players. Once in awhile I run a little short of position players (not catchers) on the Free Agent list, but I I can offset this by releasing a few players from some Triple A teams that are overstocked... And besides, I'm not using any fictional players; since you would be using fictionals, you should have no problem.

So if you were to start earlier - maybe 1890 or something like that - and let the game run (in order to build up reserve roster depth) before you get more involved and add your PCL & SA, your idea should work pretty dang close to what you want.

NOTE: I doubt you'd want to but DO NOT use real historical transactions unless you use the odb file from v12; v14 will not work with what you want to do... I don't know much about the v13 odb transactions file but I don't think it would work for you, either.

Good luck!

Hey Spritze, I am currently using a modded db that brings in - from your db that was through 2010 - your Negro and career minor-leaguers. How different would those totals from the totals you posted above? IOW, am I missing a significant amount of those guys that you may have added since the 2010 file?

Thanks in advance.

Open the master.csv you are using. the number of rows is the number of players in your db.

I have 18,288, but I forget how I got to that number (what combination of db's I used - I believe it was a combo of the neutered one - so I could have players debut w their original team - and various other non-major-leaguers from your high school one... but not exactly sure). However, just to be clear, I'm not so much curious as to how many MLB players may have been added to the db because they debuted in the years after my db (post-2010). I'm curious if you may have added significant amounts of minor leagues & Negro leaguers since your 2010 db.

I'll need to dive into ms-access and research, but if you have any idea, let me know.

Thanks

I add about 10 players a week. Currently adding 1899-1902 Negro and Cuban players as well as players who topped out in the PCL in 1903 and never made the majors.

So I'm assuming that you create an updated set of csv's every so often (to include your latest additions), and that the way for a chump like myself to get my paws on it would be to PM you for the secret site? Is that still the process?

Getting back to the original question, a 4-league setup is indeed possible.

Create the four leagues as SEPARATE (i.e. not subleagues of each other) and then associate them into a single association.
