Wacky Box Scores: Post 'Em!
Running a league with 32 teams that is evolving on its own in regards to offense and defense, I'm seeing quite a few incredible games that leave wacky box scores in their wake. I'm going to post one here, and hopefully some of you will post some of the wacky box scores you've generated in your own leagues.
In this game, the champion Black Cats of Sunderland clobbered the Rams of Derby County in a First Division tilt by a score of 31-2 on 1st July 1895, in front of what must have been an angry mob of 3,912. In this game, however, the Cats got "only" 19 hits while picking up 20 walks and benefiting from seven errors as well. One of the funnier things I noticed is the despite plating 31 guys, they also had an astonishing LOB total of 28 as well. An unfortunate young sod on the Rams named Edward Kemp took the brunt of the beating, giving up eleven runs on nine hits and 11 walks in four innings, throwing a total of 131 pitches of which only sixty-four managed to make it anywhere near the strike zone. Here's the wacky box score from that game:

Here's one other funny thing I just noticed: the game notes say that Jesse Robinson set a First Division record with six runs, which is true--no other player in Division history had scored six in a game before. But then in the same game, the notes say William Clark tied the division record for runs in a game with six, even though he set it in the same game. In other words, they didn't both set the record in the game. Robinson set the record first, then Clark tied it.
And it is true: in the ninth, Robinson and Clark both scored their sixth runs on a double by Laurence John, and Robinson did score his sixth run first. |

Here's a wacky box score. Only this one is a real one, from the California League this past season.

This game itself is not exactly wacky (though it's long, Mets won it in the 15th) but the boxscore from my team looks a lot like what Joe Madden would do...
![]() So let me explain... Everything is normal until the 9th... In the 9th, I pinch hit Collin Cowgill for Michael Saunders, then Marlon Byrd got hurt after a 4-5 night, so I took off the DH and put Sean Doolittle(who when he started baseball player was a right fielder and have the same RF rating as Duda) in the RF and switch Atchison in Duda's place to pitch. (Cowgill stays in and play LF now) I also switch in Jack Wilson to play 2B because Mets got a lot of groundball pitcher and Wilson can field much better than Daniel Murphy. Atchison managed to got on base in his AB on the top of 11th and I used Dillon Gee to pinch run because he is the fastest one left. Meanwhile, Cowgill got ejected for arguing a strikeout call and I runs out of fielders, so I was forced to use a pitcher to play LF (In this case, Matt Harvey). So yeah, I ended the game with Matt Harvey in left and Sean Doolittle in right...oh and Jack Wilson hit the game winning Home Run, go figure... got all that? ![]() (this game is at Twins, that's why there is DH btw) Last edited by tomwolf2008; 12-04-2013 at 01:47 PM. |
