Lots of questions...
Hello, everyone, and thanks to the mods for allowing me to join. I'm a long-time player of Baseball Mogul, and after hearing about OOTP for a long while, I thought I would drop in and see how this game works. I do have a whole lot of questions, however, before I take the plunge and purchase the game.
So, in no particular order: 1. Is there an option for an expansion draft? Is it operated in much the same way that the major leagues did in 1993 and 1998? 2. What about a contraction draft? 3. Is it possible to change the league and playoff structure? How many leagues and divisions can be made? 4. Can teams be moved to different cities, or to new stadiums? Does moving a team affect its revenue or attendance? How many cities are available to host teams? 5. How is the AI on trades or negotiations? Does the AI, for example, ever refuse to trade a player? Can you trick it with some dubious tactics - say, seven scrub players for a superstar? Is salary considered when trading or negotiating? 6. Are there stadium effects for the game? Does the fence distance, fence height, size of foul territory, wind, weather, and other quirks come into play? 7. Can you write up players from scratch? 8. Are there box scores and play-by-plays available for each game? 9. Is there an indication of "great plays" on defense? I think that'll do for the first barrage of questions! And thank you all in advance for the help. .sig forthcoming... oriole^ |

1. Yes
2. In theory, it may be possible, but I'm not sure on this one. 3. Yes. Almost certain you can make as many leagues/divisions as you see fit. 4. Yes, yes and you can move a team to any city, anywhere in the world. 5. There's room for improvement, but it's very solid. The AI does take salary into account. For example, you probably won't get away with trading a guy like John Lackey and his enormous contract. However, this also depends on your trade settings (difficulty settings range from very easy to very hard and whether or not you want the AI to "favor veterans" or "favor prospects") 6. As far as I know, fence distance/height has very little, if any effect on the game. For example, if you have fences 1000 feet away, it won't have any effect on home runs. By contrast, park effects ARE in the game. For example, Coors Field is the site of many a slugfest. 7. I think so. 8. Yes; just make sure that, in your settings, you opt to have the game save them. Otherwise, you're out of luck. 9. To an extent. The play-by-play will indicate it, if you have it on "full" ("short" only shows the play's result). However, it's purely cosmetic. There is a fielding statistic, though, that tracks it in a way (range factor and Zone rating). |

Lots of questions...
To add on to #6:
Yes, distances, wall height, and whatever other factors have no DIRECT effect on the game. BUT, you can use these distances, heights, "carry factors", as well as altitude and type of grass to create "ballpark factors". One user Gambo has created a spreadsheet where you can input these and it will give you "factors" that you can edit into the game. EDIT: Here is a link to that spreadsheet. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post3507360 Last edited by Ike348; 11-30-2013 at 09:04 AM. |

Okay, so to understand the thing about stadiums: there are certain factors that figure into the stats, but it's not a matter of feeding fence heights and such into the simulation, right? Except by using that third-party tool that Gambo built?

Correct, you can have 1,000 foot fences. The park factors determine play results so in that scenario you will see home runs of over 1,000 feet. The league totals will follow a simulation that has normal fences. The actual distance is cosmetic.

Having said that, moving a team can effect it's financial situation. You, as the commissioner can also set the finances to whatever you want for any team. Because the game has a fictional component all cities real and imagined are available to host teams. There are some interesting discussions about market sizes, revenue, attendance and relocation cities in the General Discussion Forums. There is a guy on here with an Endor League where the Ewoks (yes the Ewoks from Star Wars) play. The limits are pretty close to whatever you can come up with. Good luck, Tom

I am sure salary is a part of the equation the AI uses to asses value. I do not know how much or what weight it has but I am sure it is in there.
