Can't sign draft picks?

I can't seem to sign any of the players I have drafted, the only option I have is to add/remove them from my shortlist

any help is appreciated, thanks

I'm going to guess that you're past the signing deadline?

If you go to the Team Menu > Unsigned Draftees, you should see the signing deadline for each player.

Some players may not be able to be signed as well due to transfer restraints (ex. Players contracted to Russian teams and certain European squads cannot transfer to the NHL until they become free agents. Especially true if they are playing in the KHL, VHL or MHL).

The problem is (if you are an NHL team) is that in many cases they never become free agents. They immediately, on the day of (their) free agency, re-up with their former team so you never get the chance.

I always end up not drafting players from eastern Europe.

I assume the problem only exists for overaged european players....i never had any problem signing 17-18 year olds from Scandinavia or former Eastern Bloc countries

As a junior team? Haven't tried, but I'm talking about my draftees.

Talking about the draftees too....after the draft when you check your unsigned draftees/RFA´s there you can see your signable 17-18y old european draftees along some greyed-out overaged (mostly european) players - the greyed-out are under contract and therefore not signable for you - Everyone else is ready to sign, check their stats - if they played already for american junior teams you can loan them out the following season if they played in any european league you must assign them to your respective AHL/ECHL team or let them play with the big boys (not recommended)

You have only from the offseason to Aug 31st to sign your unsigned draftees. When it comes to the KHL-based players, Jeff or Sebastian has already said it's a problem that they are having trouble coding correctly. The goal is for an NHL team to pay the KHL team a transfer fee like in European Hockey and then sign the player. It's just not working that way yet.

It can probably be remedied in commish mode where you can release the player and then sign him as a free agent.

Doesn't sound too unrealistic. This is also why NHL teams draft less and less Russkies

True but I think it was too much when I tested this last time. It was also true for Finns, Swedes etc.

Yes, probably it's too hard to get Russkies, but I think it's a step in the right direction. For every Nichushkin there is a Petrov, and so on.
I think that a good idea would be having the user a chance to know when exactly sign players. Right now it's a mess and you've got zero chance to actually understand anything.

Yeah and maybe before the draft you could know about some players that they declared to not go to NHL and prefer KHL.

The issue of players not wanting to leave the KHL for the NHL is not what the game is modeling. The issue in the game is that as an NHL team you aren't even given the chance to negotiate with the player because they are never free agents.

There should just be an exception added where the NHL team with the rights to a given KHL player should be allowed to negotiate an NHL contract that begins after the players KHL contract runs out even while they are currently under contract. As I write that I see it sounds convoluted but what I'm trying to say is: now the situation everywhere is that the only time you can negotiate with a player that is currently under contract (for contract extensions) is when they are on your own team, this should be extended to the case where a KHL player has NHL rights owned by another team. Obviously the player still has to play out his current KHL contract, but at least the NHL team can negotiate to have the player come over once that contract runs out (like with the Caps and Kuznetesov). That way you could still also have the situation of a player not wanting to leave Russia and just rejecting negotiations and continuing to re-up with the KHL.
