N.B.A. Title Fight

NBA Title Fight

#1 James J. Corbett 16-0-0 (5) vs. #2 Eddie Mustafa Muhammad 15-0-0 (13)

Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV. We are here tonight to witness the inaugural National Boxing Association (NBA) Heavyweight Championship Fight between James J. Corbett of San Francisco, CA, and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad of Brooklyn, NY. 'Gentleman' James J. Corbett comes into this fight with an undefeated record and impressive wins over Lee Ramage, Gene 'Tiger' Jones and Danny 'Bronx Bomber' Santiago, all of whom were undefeated at the time of their bouts with Corbett. The #1 ranked contender, Corbett is a technically sound and savvy boxer, with quick hands, good footwork and impressive defensive skills. The one liability that many experts point to is a lack of punching power but Corbett offsets that with a superior boxing skill set. The #2 contender, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, formerly Eddie 'The Flame' Gregory, also comes into this fight undefeated, with wins over 'Sailor' Ted Schnieder, James 'Tut' Jackson, and Arthur Schock, all also undefeated when meeting Mustafa Muhammad. Mustafa Muhammad has surprised many boxing experts with his knockout power and consistent success although being a smallish heavyweight. Mustafa Muhammad initially fought as a light-heavyweight as an amateur, but has campaigned in the big-boy circuit since turning pro. Some critics point out that Mustafa Muhammad's management team has done a good job of protecting their fighter with timely match-ups, not as competitive or impressive as some of the other fighters passed over for this title shot. Mustafa Muhammad, not worried about what critics think, believes that he can only knock down whoever steps into the ring with him and tonight will be a culmination for all his hard work.

Corbett is the aggressor to start out the fight and controls the tempo for the full, three minutes. Corbett is warned twice in the first round, once for a low blow and once for holding and hitting. 'Gentleman' Jim continues to control the pace and action, landing punches and cleverly getting out of range before Mustafa Muhammad can land. Mustafa Muhammad has been relegated to being a counter-puncher for these first, three rounds, a role that does not suit his style and makes him look like a stranger to the squared circle. Mustafa Muhammad's corner works to reduce the swelling around his right eye during the break. The fourth round is the best of the fight to this point as both fighters mix it up in the middle of the ring. This looks more like the fight we expected to see from Mustafa Muhammad. Corbett continues to paint his masterpiece over the next two rounds, peppering his opponent while avoiding any counters. Corbett has convincingly controlled the first half of this fight and Mustafa Muhammad looks like he is stuck in quicksand. Round 8 begins with thunder as Mustafa Muhammad finally unleashes his hands and lands a huge, right hook that lands flush and puts Corbett down with 2:38 left on the clock. Although dazed, Corbett manages to get to his feet at the count of eight. Mustafa Muhammad closes the distance and applies pressure, trying to end the fight. Corbett does a great job of clinching and tying up Mustafa Muhammad and manages to survive the round. Corbett has developed swelling around his right eye after the round and his corner will have to reduce the swelling while also trying to clear the cobwebs of of their boxer's head. Corbett seems to have found solid footing as he manages to get back to the technical boxing that captured the first half of the fight, here in the 9th round. 'Flame' rushes out of his corner and stuns Corbett with shots to the head and body, but Corbett rallies at the end of the round and makes is a very tough round to score. As we head to the championship rounds, Mustafa Muhammad probably needs a couple of knockdowns or a stoppage to win the fight. Mustafa Muhammad follows his corner's instructions and goes all out for the knockout. Although he wins the round, he might have waited too long to get started. We go to the 12th and final round. 'Gentleman' James J. Corbett does a wonderful job of avoiding any of Mustafa Muhammad's desperate overhand rights and hooks as he believes that he is ahead by a big enough margin to just dance away the final three minutes of this title fight. We will have to go to the scorecards to determine the winner.

Winner: Corbett
Result: (UD12)
Cards: 116-111, 115-112, 114-113, all in favor of Corbett
Punch stats: Corbett 330-702, 47% - Mustafa Muhammad 196-705, 27.8%

Seems only a matter of time before Louis repeats his performance against Sullivan on Corbett.

It all depends. Right now there is a total of 65 ranked HW's, so another santioning body will soon have a title fight when 35 more enter the official rankings. Louis could either be in line for a shot at Corbett for the NBA strap or possibly a box off for an initial title fight for the WBC or WBO, (I forget which one as I type this.)

The other thing is Corbett's defense hasn't been determined yet. I haven't done the random generator to determine the month and opponent. Louis, although the number #1 contender, isn't necessarily Corbett's next opponent unless it is determined that he has to face the mandatory #1.

It was a nice victory for the Brown Bomber though.

Sorry didn't realize there were a multitude of titles.

Any hope of one day having a unified champion?

Always hope, but everything is random so I cannot influence anything.

It looks like Joe Louis will end up fighting for the next, sanctioning bodies title (USBC) because Corbett isn't scheduled to have a title defense until November (determined by random generator).
