Historic League play?

Ive been wanting to buy a sim hockey game for years and since I love OOTP baseball i want to give this a go..My issue is the reviews seem to be across the board for this game. I know the baseball game has set a high standard.
As someone who only wants to play historic seasons, is it going to work? Ive seen comments where historic play does not work properly. For $40 I do not want another Football Mogul.

Its not ready for histoic play well not the way i want to it wont let you move players around from eara to earaand thats what i love to do but on the other hand it does let you sim out hocky like it was played for a total replay..its your call the game will get better and for that to happen fatser we have to saport it i think you should buy it and know that each year it will improve

And I don't want Football Mogul even for free. It is the game that is playable but totally unenjoyable.

it does not let you draft .. at all... in historic games. I am hoping this is on short list of things that will be added soon.

Did you turn the draft on at the start of the game? It has to be selected during the setup options. It's off by default, which places the rookies on their historical starting teams, but if you turn it on they appear as draftable free agents.

thanks for replying. Yes I specifically turned it on. I did not look for "draftable free agents"..... I didn't notice any entry draft, so assumed there were no draft selections.

Looking at the free agents list and sorting the ages from youngest to oldest, I think I see what you mean, that they all just get dumped to the free agents list. That's definately better...... but not really anything like having scouts scour the world looking for talent and then drafting them in a historical draft.

I mean the whole point of playing a historical scenario is to see how you'd do if you were the gm back then..... (i'm playing the 2000-2001 season, which had drafts, just for context)

If I am correct in my thinking, it still retires players when they retired historically. That's frustrating for me, and I love historical sims as well.. It changes how you can and would invest in players. Until that feature becomes a toggle feature, I am staying away.

Also, the scouting system is lacking, but is working as intended, and as of right now you cannot turn it off.

If historical play is what you want, I'd wait a patch or two before purchasing. Hopefully, it will get better for us hockey history buffs.. I have faith that it will, but it is going to take time. You might get lucky and see a price drop as well.

There is a toggle in the setup screen when you create a new historical game that allows you to turn on, or off players retiring in the actual year they retired. I have not tested it to see verify it works as it should, but the toggle is definately there. Make sure you have the latest version of the game if you don't see it.

As for waiting to purchase it, too late

I'm sticking with it for now though and not asking for a refund, as I am seeing that they are dilligently working hard on the project.

Actually I didn't even buy it for the historical feature, that was merely an unexpected, and wonderful bonus. So I am happy being patient and waiting for it to be fully completed.

Unless it has changed, previously the toggle existed, but you were not able to turn it off.

You are right!!!

The toggle is there, but is enabled and cannot be turned off yet. Thanks for the correction. At least, since the toggle exists, it suggests they plan to make it possible to turn it off eventually.

I'm not sure why you're not seeing a draft, there definitely is one. It should happen on July 10. What year are you starting in?

I found that I made the assistant in charge of draft and found my players in unsign draftees. Not sure if this helps.

My unsigned draftees page is completely blank, and my assistant is not in charge of drafts.

Try it yourself, 2000-2001 season, as the montreal canadiens. I'm set as comish and "cannot be fired" is set to on.

Would be interesting to see if anyone else can replicate this or if it's just me.

Just tried as manager of Pittsburgh with your settings. The draft happened as it should. Maybe you made a mistake with the inital settings?

Other things I found while doing this:
- in the draft I saw that some players had a potential rating (with stars) assigned to them. I tried to sort by that column, but that was not possible. It did change the order of the players, but it didn't sort by the potential rating. BUG!

- the Stanley Cup Finals between Detroit and Pittsburgh went to game 7. For fun I looked at the boxscore to see how the last game played out. I WAS SHOCKED to discover this (see attached image).

Mario Lemieux fighting twice in the opening period of game 7. I am sad and have no words for this...

Mario Lemieux always was a trouble maker

I am trying again, this time NOT in commishioner mode, and untoggled "cannot be fired"... I dunno exactly what your settings are so I am trying to change as few things as possible from default.

I am going to try it as pittsburgh this time and see what happens.

Also.... have you the latest version of the game? it could be possible that the bug is only in the newest version (i downloaded my version two days ago)

I used your settings (i. e. commissioner and cannot be fired).

I'm not sure. I've set the game up as you did, Montreal in commissioner mode/can't be fired in 2000-01, and I definitely get interrupted on July 10, 2001 by a prompt to take part in the draft. The only thing I can think of is that you might've accidentally turned the draft off when you were setting up. Can you try starting another game, make sure the draft option is selected, and then just let it run unemployed to the following August and see if the draft happens?
