How smart is the AI with its bullpen?

So I have 28 man roster I carry 13 pitchers 5 starters 8 relivers I
Always have older ex starter or up in coming possible starter as a "Long Relife" role and also assigned as "Emergency Starter" so I always give this guy those two roles but is the AI smart enought to bring him
In as middle relife when my others are used up? Or if he is a LHP will the AI be smart enought to use him in as a LH specialist even if that role is not given to him? Or will he ONLY be used as
Long relife and Emegency starter?

Bullpen management could be better, but it's not bad by any stretch. The AI does play matchups a lot--that part I like. However, I feel like they leave the starter in too long...I guess that's a matter of opinion, though, because I've seen some questionable decisions in real life.

FWIW I use a 7-pitcher bullpen by default; sometimes, I go with eight pitchers depending on the state of my team at the time.

The AI does not use the pitchers' assigned roles as ironclad contracts....it will use them in other situations.....

I never play modern ball with gaggles of arms in the pen (5 is the standard in my leagues), so I can't say whether it will use pitchers as specialists (1 at bat appearances) outside of the role being assigned to them (or even if it uses the assigned pitchers in those roles properly).....but it will choose alternate pitchers for the other roles if the ones assigned to a needed role are currently tired....
