), but the game my Raccoons clinched their first postseason after me failing most horribletastifistic at this game for over a year, and the Raccoons losing between 93 and 107 games in each of their first five seasons, on a cold night with six to play in their seventh year of existence.

We had a magic number of 2 going into the final week with our last remaining rivals looming on the final weekend of the year, and we were down by five quickly in the opener of our season against the Boston Titans, but, yes, Virginia, rallies do exist.

And here's the fabulous R.A. Koontz with the radio broadcast of the key moments (which HAVE been preserved in my dynasty thread

Two down in the top of the ninth, and now Isto Grönholm comes to the plate. He has two home runs today, and they are not going to pitch to him. Dicks calls for the walk. And they will put Grönholm on with four quick tosses.

Ryan Dickerson comes up. He is one for three today. He swings at the first pitch! It goes into left center and drops just in front of Daniel Hall! And now we have a flare here, with two on and two out. The Raccoons need an out now!

The "Demon" [our closer Grant "Demon" West] takes a deep breath. One ball and no strikes to Hernandez. Pitch! A swing and launched into centerfield. There comes Chris Smith and he has it, and IT IS OVER!!!

The Canadiens have lost and the Raccoons squeeze through the Titans, seven to six, and IT IS OVER!!! THE RACCOONS GO TO THE POSTSEASON!!!

I don't think any other details are really needed there, save that it was the 9th game of the season (and my OOTP career) and that he won Cy Young that year.

I have now played nine seasons (2012-2020) with the Plymouth Pilgrims in my fictional British and Irish League, with a few spectacular games - many of them play-off games, which obviously stick in the mind better.

A few highlights:

September 2012: Three amazing games in the space of a week, beginning with a 22-4 win over Dublin which was 7-4 going into the bottom of the 8th, before we proceeded to score 15 runs on 10 hits (helped by 3 errors!), sending 20 men to the plate in the 8th. Five days later, there was a 19-0 blowout at Norwich, jointly our biggest away win, but even more remarkable given that the very next night, Norwich turned it around to win 21-9 - the only time we have given up 20+ runs in a game.

June 2013: Trailing 5-2 going into the 9th in Dublin, we stole second four times in the top of the 9th and brought all four runners round to score, taking a 6-5 lead which we held to win the game.

October 2013: We blew a three game lead in the Championship Series and lost to Dublin in 7 games. Most painfully, in game four we were 4-0 up going into the bottom of the seventh and gave up a triple, three singles and a 3-run home run to fall 5-4 behind, eventually losing 7-5. From there, we fell apart to lose the series. Co-incidentally, that game four was actually 'played' today, 15 October 2013.

August 2014: Spectacular revenge over Dublin, with a 24-0 win - still the league record margin of victory as of the end of the 2020 season.

August 2015: A ridiculous 12-11 loss at Newcastle. We led 7-6 going into the 9th, and added four more runs in the top half of the inning to surely make the game safe at 11-6. However, we contrived to give up six runs in the bottom of the 9th, three of them with two outs, to lose the game.

October 2018: Our first no-hitter of any kind, a combined no-hitter, but in a massive playoff game. We had lost game 1 to defending champions Southampton, 1-0, and needed a response in game 2. We certainly got it, with our starter pitching seven no-hit innings before three relievers combined to complete the no-hitter and level the series, which we went on to win 3 games to 1 (but sadly lost in the next round!)

October 2019: Two fantastic fightbacks in the playoffs against Glasgow. Again we had lost game one and trailed 6-1 going into the bottom of the 7th in game two. We got one back in that inning, but the real highlight was scoring six in the eighth to take an 8-6 lead and eventually tie the series. Having won the next two, we had a chance to clinch the series in game five but trailed 7-2 after four innings. This time we just chipped away at the lead, scoring two in the fifth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth before adding two more in the ninth to take the lead, holding on to clinch the series 4 games to 1.

Game 4 of the first round of the playoffs in my fictional league (in a 5-game series). My team, the Stampede, was an expansion team in only their third year in the league. We were a bunch of upstart rookies and wannabe stars, and we were facing off against the team with the best record in the league, called the Alliance. No one in their right mind would have picked us to win, and indeed, we had gotten our behinds handed to us in the first two games of the series. We took Game 3 with a gritty win to push the series to 2-1, but things looked bleak right off the bat in Game 4.

My starter failed to retire a single batter in the first inning, allowing 4 runs and leaving a man on base when I pulled him and put in the guy who was supposed to start in Game 5. He promptly let up a 2-run homer. So we were down 6-0 before getting a single out, and it felt quite clear that we were losing the series. But we started chipping away. Ultimately, the score became 8-7 in the bottom of the 7th, and we had a runner on 3rd with two outs. He scored on a wild pitch to improbably tie the game.

In the top of the ninth, the Alliance scored again, making it 9-8. We got two men on base in the bottom of the ninth, but then my batter fouled off three straight bunt attempts for a strikeout. With my number 8 hitter due up, and the pitcher's spot after him, I had kind of accepted defeat at that point. But lo and behold, my rookie number 8 hitter, who was only in the lineup due to injury, tore into the first pitch he saw from their closer, and smoked it into the stands to force a Game 5.

We ultimately won that series with an 11-inning victory in Game 5, and then went on to lose in the next round, but that walk-off in Game 4 will forever be etched into my memory. David absolutely slew Goliath after being down 2-0 in the series, and it kicked off one of the best rivalries I have ever witnessed in OOTP (the two teams would meet in the playoffs three out of the next four years).

My best game occurred this June. Here's the writeup, my dynasty report--

6/12--The Yankees played one of the most bizarre games in the entire history of the franchise. The game started off innocently enough, with the Yankees taking a 8-1 lead into the bottom of the 3rd. With C.C. Sabathia on the mound, it looked like the Yankees were headed for a routine W. But, this is baseball. "Looked like" and "will happen" are not always the same. The A's scored 2 in the bottom of the 3rd, 1 in the 5th and their 4 run rally in the 6th tied the game, 8-8, and sent Sabathia to the showers.

In the bottom of the 7th, a solo HR by Cody Ross gave the A's a 9-8 lead. In the top of the 9th, a 3 run HR by Jesus Montero, off Dan Straily, gave the Yankees a 11-9 lead. Straily was immediately removed from the game and replaced by Ryan Vogelsong. Vogelsong's 1st pitch of the game was the only one he threw. Vogelsong hit Miguel Montero. Montero charged the mound and the benches cleared. Vogelsong and Montero were promptly ejected.

The Yankees thought things were back under control, when Mariano Rivera took the mound to put an end to the game in the bottom of the 9th. Derek Norris grounded out to rookie SS Addison Maruszak. but Maicer Izturis followed with a single to left and rookie Michael Choice, who is off to a fast start to his major league career, hit his 2nd career HR, in his 5th career game, to tie the game, 11-11.

Johnny Damon led off the top of the 10th with a ground ball base hit to left. But, he was erased when Albert Pujols followed with a 4-6-3 DP. The Yankees thought things were in the bag when Giancarlo Stanton hit his 2nd HR of the game, his 24th of the season (2nd in the majors, behind Blue Jays SS Bob Edwards's 27).

In the bottom of the 10th, Mariano Rivera was asked to do something he hasn't done all season--pitch 2 innings. He started the inning by getting Gaby Sanchez to ground out to 2B Derek Jeter. Yoenis Cespedes followed with a line drive double to left and Cody Ross's double to center scored Cespedes to tie game, 12-12. Rivera struck out Todd Frazier, who had just been acquired in a trade with the Mariners. But, the SO pitch to Frazier was the last one Rivera could throw tonight. He had to leave the game, due to a sore shoulder, and was replaced by Tony Sipp. Sipp struck out Derek Norris, to send the game to the 11th.

Henderson Alvarez started the 11th for the A's. He was already exhausted headed to the mound, but they were out of rested relievers and this would end up being Alvarez's 3rd appearance, in the past 5 days, of 35-50 pitches thrown. After David Ross led off with a single and Melky Mesa walked, Alvarez was mercifully removed from the game. (At least that's what people thought it happened.) In came Brett Anderson, who was already exhausted, but the A's didn't have any rested relievers. No matter how bad you'd expect an already exhausted reliever to pitch, Anderson greatly exceeded expectations on bad an inning a reliever could have. It had taken the Yankees 10 innings to score 12 runs up to that point, off 8 pitchers. It took 1/3 of an inning for the Yankees to score 12 runs off Anderson (10 charged to him, 2 to Alvarez). Anderson's line--1/3 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO. Anderson was finally mercifully replaced by starting pitcher Kyle Lohse, who retired the final 2 batters of the inning. Sipp retired the A's in the bottom of the 11th and the Yankees had a 24-12 win.

Stanton had 5 hits (1 2B, 2 HR, 1 BB), Derek Jeter had 4 hits (1 BB), Alex Rodriguez, Jesus Montero (1 HR), Melky Mesa (1 2B) and Addison Maruszak (who didn't even start the game) had 3 hits for the Yankees and Albert Pujols was 0 for 5 (2 BB). Danny Espinosa (1 2B), Michael Choice (1 HR, 1 BB) and Zach Lutz had 3 hits for the A's, while Todd Frazier was 0 for 6.

Meanwhile, A's 2B Rickie Weeks suffered a knee contusion and is expected to miss 1-2 weeks.

ATM--The Yankees placed former Yankees P Phil Coke on the 15 day DL, after he suffered shoulder tendinitis while throwing a shoe out the window to stop a cat from meowing. Reds CF, and former Yankee, Brett Gardner had 5 hits. The Blue Jays traded P C.J. Wilson to the Dodgers for 5 minor leaguers.

6/13--There was plenty of aftermath from yesterday's game--

1) The Yankees placed Mariano Rivera on the 15 day DL and called up P Jake Diekman. Rivera has a sore shoulder and is expected to just miss the minimum 15 days.

2) After yesterday's terrible outing, the A's traded P Brett Anderson to the Rays for minor leaguers 1B Cameron Seitzer and P Taylor Guerrieri (who now becomes their #2 ranked prospect, behind SS Paul Hamilton, who was the #1 pick in the country in the 2013 draft). Miguel Montero and Ryan Vogelsong were both suspended for 4 games.

3) To get another C onto the roster, the Yankees sent slumping rookie OF Mike Olt to the minors and called up C Austin Romine. Romine's having a bad year in AAA, but gets the call over Francisco Cervelli by virtue of the fact that he's already on the 40 man roster. Olt had a 17 game hitting streak in which he was one of the hottest hitters in the league, but overall is hitting just .328 OBA, .417 SLG, .745 OPS, .245 AVG, 8 HR, 26 RBI in his 1st 52 games in the majors.

4) The A's announced that Alvarez has diagnosed with a torn UCL in his elbow and will have Tommy John surgery. He went on the 60 day DL and Weeks went on the 15 day DL. To get some fresh arms, the A's called up former Yankee Sean Burnett and Vin Mazzaro, while 3B Miles Head was also recalled from AAA.

5) After yesterday's 11 inning classic, the teams now have to play a day game after a night game today.

6) YES has announced changes to the programming schedule. With the Yankees having a day off on the upcoming Monday, the 24-12 victory will be shown as the latest installment of "Yankees Classics". The scheduled showing of Barry Bonds's 800th HR game, which had been that night's scheduled showing of Yankees Classics, will be preempted.

I'm doing an inaugural sim of the 1969 system with an NFL-style playoff system, and two great games just happened in the same day. Someone who had just been called up from the minor leagues got a no-hitter, and there was a 1-0 game which ended with a solo homer in the bottom of the 9th inning.
In that year, I stumbled upon an awesome game to end the regular seson, between the Tigers and Angels. (btw, is there a way to contain those images a bit, so they don't take up so much space?)

Some more highlights from that SAME SERIES (NLDS, Cardinals-Mets, Mets win 4-2)
Game 1- Mets win 2-1 on a walk-off fielder's choice
Game 3- The aforementioned no-hitter
Game 5- Jerry Koosman throws a one-hitter in an 8-0 Mets victory
Game 6- 6-run 9th capped off by a walk-off grand slam leads Mets to an 8-7 victory to win the series.

This isn't a game that I actually 'played', just one involving two other teams in my league, but the finish was absolutely incredible.

After Newcastle had seen a 21-11 lead cut to 21-15 going into the bottom of the 9th, Nottingham got a further run back to cut the deficit to 5. With the bases loaded and two out, Newcastle made a pitching change to try to get the final out. Then this happened.

As of April 2021, the game is still the highest scoring ever in my league (next highest combined 35 runs).

I never thought to save screen shots like some others posted but there have been a few really good games in world series settings in my previous version of OOTP (just getting started on 14) where they ended in walk off wins or a dominating pitching performance to hold onto a 1 nothing win. Had a game that was a pitching duel and won 1-0 on a squeeze play in the middle innings then pitching made it stand up.

Here's the writeup, my dynasty report-- 6/12--The Yankees played one of the most bizarre games in the entire history of the franchise. The game started off innocently enough, with the Yankees taking a 8-1 lead into the bottom of the 3rd. With C.C. Sabathia on the mound, it looked like the Yankees were headed for a routine W. But, this is baseball. "Looked like" and "will happen" are not always the same. The A's scored 2 in the bottom of the 3rd, 1 in the 5th and their 4 run rally in the 6th tied the game, 8-8, and sent Sabathia to the showers. In the bottom of the 7th, a solo HR by Cody Ross gave the A's a 9-8 lead. In the top of the 9th, a 3 run HR by Jesus Montero, off Dan Straily, gave the Yankees a 11-9 lead. Straily was immediately removed from the game and replaced by Ryan Vogelsong. Vogelsong's 1st pitch of the game was the only one he threw. Vogelsong hit Miguel Montero. Montero charged the mound and the benches cleared. Vogelsong and Montero were promptly ejected. The Yankees thought things were back under control, when Mariano Rivera took the mound to put an end to the game in the bottom of the 9th. Derek Norris grounded out to rookie SS Addison Maruszak. but Maicer Izturis followed with a single to left and rookie Michael Choice, who is off to a fast start to his major league career, hit his 2nd career HR, in his 5th career game, to tie the game, 11-11. Johnny Damon led off the top of the 10th with a ground ball base hit to left. But, he was erased when Albert Pujols followed with a 4-6-3 DP. The Yankees thought things were in the bag when Giancarlo Stanton hit his 2nd HR of the game, his 24th of the season (2nd in the majors, behind Blue Jays SS Bob Edwards's 27). In the bottom of the 10th, Mariano Rivera was asked to do something he hasn't done all season--pitch 2 innings. He started the inning by getting Gaby Sanchez to ground out to 2B Derek Jeter. Yoenis Cespedes followed with a line drive double to left and Cody Ross's double to center scored Cespedes to tie game, 12-12. Rivera struck out Todd Frazier, who had just been acquired in a trade with the Mariners. But, the SO pitch to Frazier was the last one Rivera could throw tonight. He had to leave the game, due to a sore shoulder, and was replaced by Tony Sipp. Sipp struck out Derek Norris, to send the game to the 11th. Henderson Alvarez started the 11th for the A's. He was already exhausted headed to the mound, but they were out of rested relievers and this would end up being Alvarez's 3rd appearance, in the past 5 days, of 35-50 pitches thrown. After David Ross led off with a single and Melky Mesa walked, Alvarez was mercifully removed from the game. (At least that's what people thought it happened.) In came Brett Anderson, who was already exhausted, but the A's didn't have any rested relievers. No matter how bad you'd expect an already exhausted reliever to pitch, Anderson greatly exceeded expectations on bad an inning a reliever could have. It had taken the Yankees 10 innings to score 12 runs up to that point, off 8 pitchers. It took 1/3 of an inning for the Yankees to score 12 runs off Anderson (10 charged to him, 2 to Alvarez). Anderson's line--1/3 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO. Anderson was finally mercifully replaced by starting pitcher Kyle Lohse, who retired the final 2 batters of the inning. Sipp retired the A's in the bottom of the 11th and the Yankees had a 24-12 win. Stanton had 5 hits (1 2B, 2 HR, 1 BB), Derek Jeter had 4 hits (1 BB), Alex Rodriguez, Jesus Montero (1 HR), Melky Mesa (1 2B) and Addison Maruszak (who didn't even start the game) had 3 hits for the Yankees and Albert Pujols was 0 for 5 (2 BB). Danny Espinosa (1 2B), Michael Choice (1 HR, 1 BB) and Zach Lutz had 3 hits for the A's, while Todd Frazier was 0 for 6. Meanwhile, A's 2B Rickie Weeks suffered a knee contusion and is expected to miss 1-2 weeks. ATM--The Yankees placed former Yankees P Phil Coke on the 15 day DL, after he suffered shoulder tendinitis while throwing a shoe out the window to stop a cat from meowing. Reds CF, and former Yankee, Brett Gardner had 5 hits. The Blue Jays traded P C.J. Wilson to the Dodgers for 5 minor leaguers. 6/13--There was plenty of aftermath from yesterday's game-- 1) The Yankees placed Mariano Rivera on the 15 day DL and called up P Jake Diekman. Rivera has a sore shoulder and is expected to just miss the minimum 15 days. 2) After yesterday's terrible outing, the A's traded P Brett Anderson to the Rays for minor leaguers 1B Cameron Seitzer and P Taylor Guerrieri (who now becomes their #2 ranked prospect, behind SS Paul Hamilton, who was the #1 pick in the country in the 2013 draft). Miguel Montero and Ryan Vogelsong were both suspended for 4 games. 3) To get another C onto the roster, the Yankees sent slumping rookie OF Mike Olt to the minors and called up C Austin Romine. Romine's having a bad year in AAA, but gets the call over Francisco Cervelli by virtue of the fact that he's already on the 40 man roster. Olt had a 17 game hitting streak in which he was one of the hottest hitters in the league, but overall is hitting just .328 OBA, .417 SLG, .745 OPS, .245 AVG, 8 HR, 26 RBI in his 1st 52 games in the majors. 4) The A's announced that Alvarez has diagnosed with a torn UCL in his elbow and will have Tommy John surgery. He went on the 60 day DL and Weeks went on the 15 day DL. To get some fresh arms, the A's called up former Yankee Sean Burnett and Vin Mazzaro, while 3B Miles Head was also recalled from AAA. 5) After yesterday's 11 inning classic, the teams now have to play a day game after a night game today. 6) YES has announced changes to the programming schedule. With the Yankees having a day off on the upcoming Monday, the 24-12 victory will be shown as the latest installment of "Yankees Classics". The scheduled showing of Barry Bonds's 800th HR game, which had been that night's scheduled showing of Yankees Classics, will be preempted.

as5680 All Star Starter Join Date: Apr 2012 Location: Didcot, England Posts: 1,426	This isn't a game that I actually 'played', just one involving two other teams in my league, but the finish was absolutely incredible. After Newcastle had seen a 21-11 lead cut to 21-15 going into the bottom of the 9th, Nottingham got a further run back to cut the deficit to 5. With the bases loaded and two out, Newcastle made a pitching change to try to get the final out. Then this happened. As of April 2021, the game is still the highest scoring ever in my league (next highest combined 35 runs).
