Dilema - need help (Human vs AI issue)
I resigned 32 year old Travis d'Arnaud to a 5 year, 87.5m extension before the 2022 season, and now it's mid 2023, and he's declined (of course) from a 5 win player to a 2.5-3 win player, so barely league average. I have a superstar catching prospect in AAA who's totally ready to play in the majors.
I can trade d'Arnaud, plus another catching prospect (my scout rates him as a 61 curr/68 pot) and a ss/3b prospect (46 cur/68 pot) to a Cubs team who OSA says needs a catcher, but their current #1 is outproducing d'Arnaud. In return, I'd be taking on a horrific 1 year contract (11.5m) + sending them $6m in cash. So basically I'd be giving them d'Arnaud, 2 prospects, and ~17.5m in cash and getting back nothing. ------------------- Or I can trade d'Arnaud to a Pirates team who OSA says needs a catcher, and they really do, d'Arnaud would be a clear upgrade for them, and I'd be sending them an OF prospect as well (34 cur, 51 pot), and taking back a horrid 1 year contract (13.5m), and two prospects, a catching prospect with a 33 pot, and an OF propsect with a 46 pot. What deal do I do? Or do I just keep d'Arnaud?

No human GM interested in being competitive in the next 4 years would realistically take that contract. If you can find a team that's absolutely wretched and won't be better in a long time, maybe, but if I were that GM, you'd have to throw a slew of prospects to me for it to be worth my while.

But I'd basically giving them 13.5m in cash (taking back a worthless player). So it's be a 3.5 year 55mdeal.

I think I'm gonna not trade him. It'd be way too 'cheaty' IMO, even if I'm absorbing that much money. I'll just reap what I sewed when I signed a 32 year old catcher for 5 years (I sewed stupidity).
As for my other catcher, in AAA, I'll bring him up and try to use him as a utility guy at C, 1b, 3b and the corner OF spots next season.

Hard/Favor Prospects.
More info: Mets are ranked 6th in baseball in catchers, Pirates are ranked 30th. Pirates are in Win Now mode. More and more I'm thinking I should make the deal. They'd get an immediate HUGE boost to their catchers, and I'd get out of a contract, and I'd be taking back 13.5m in salary to offset some of the salary left on d'Arnaud's deal. Here's the deal I have in place right now (June 6th, 2023) Mets trade: Travis d'Arnaud 54 rating (3.67 years, 64.3m left on deal), AAA OF prospect Dan McCoy (34 cur, 51 pot), AAA OF Claudio Flores, AAA SP Alex Meyer (31 rating), AA 1b Ronald Nowak (59 cur, 66 pot), $6m in cash Pirates trade: 1b Prince Fielder 21 rating (9.04m left), SP Manuel Torres (5.7m left), A OF Jordan Koch (21 cur, 46 pot), A- C Tomas Gonzalez (21 cur, 33 pot) So, BASICALLY, they get immediate help at catcher, lose 2 horrible contracts, get cash, and a couple of good prospects. I'm eating basically 20.74m of the 64.3m left on the deal. I think it's pretty fair for both sides, but what do you guys think?

See what happens using very difficult. You won't be cheating on that setting I don't think

The AI is so completely over the top ridiculous using "very hard" that it's just not fun to play on that setting. I don't feel like giving up my firstborn child and naming rights to the stadium in every deal.

By decline from a 5 win player to a 2.5 or 3 win player do you mean WAR or the star values.
I follow this rule when it comes to unloading bad contracts. If the ratings drop is not accompanied by a related statistical decline then I go ahead and pull the trigger. The ratings drop (with scouting on) is a forecast by my scout and if he is clever enough to see the decline coming then I feel justified in moving the player before his level of play drops. This is why I pay my scout good money. Also, if the stats have not dropped then there is the possibility that my scout is wrong and the receiving team may be getting more then fair value. If the stats have already dropped then I don't do the deal or if there is a deal it is clearly done as a salary dump (cash going their way and low rated prospect(s) in return). Just a thought. You clearly give thought to playing the game realistically and the deals you have potentially worked out are not over the top ridiculous. If your team is on a tight budget like mine having that contract can be very restricting. |
