1953 Playoffs
![]() Cleveland Crowned Champions Wednesday, October 7th, 1953 Cleveland is riding skyhigh on cloud nine today after they won the 9th North American Series title in its team's history. The Indians put the Brooklyn Dodgers out of their misery with a 7-6 victory at Cleveland Stadium and took the series 4-3. 1953 Offseason St Louis Browns relocate to Baltimore and become the Orioles. ![]() Retirements ![]() Draft NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Monday, October 12th, 1953 It's draft day in the NABL. Clubs across the circuit will be trying to outmaneuver one another, hoping to conceal their most coveted picks until the last second. Once the action starts, though, all the mock drafts and predictions are out the window, and it's anybody's guess who will end up where. Grabbing the first picks are: Boston, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Chicago and New York. BNN predicts the first ten players selected will be: 1. Don Hoak, 25 year-old third baseman out of college. 2. Hank Aaron, 19 year-old left fielder out of high-school. 3. Jerry Lynch, 23 year-old left fielder out of college. 4. Walt Moryn, 27 year-old right fielder out of college. 5. Woodie Held, 21 year-old shortstop out of college. 6. Jim Finigan, 25 year-old third baseman out of college. 7. Bill Skowron, 22 year-old first baseman out of college. 8. Joe Cunningham, 22 year-old first baseman out of college. 9. Karl Spooner, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Wally Moon, 23 year-old center fielder out of college. Round One Only ![]() Baltimore Draft Picks ![]() Awards NL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced Monday, October 19th, 1953 In baseball circles, a player who has good range, a good arm and good hands is a great catch. Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 1953 in the National League go to these standout defenders: Pitcher: Billy Hoeft (New York Giants) Catcher: Joe Garagiola (Brooklyn Dodgers) First Baseman: Joe Adcock (Brooklyn Dodgers) Second Baseman: Billy Goodman (Milwaukee Braves) Third Baseman: Gil McDougald (Chicago Cubs) Shortstop: Johnny Logan (Brooklyn Dodgers) Left Fielder: Dale Mitchell (Cincinnati Redlegs) Center Fielder: Mickey Mantle (Chicago Cubs) Right Fielder: Carl Furillo (Brooklyn Dodgers) American League Names Top Gloves Monday, October 19th, 1953 It's been said that the best offense is a good defense. That's why contending teams are always looking to improve on the defensive side of the game. Keeping runs from scoring is just as good as driving them in. The top fielders have been chosen in the American League for 1953. Here are the Glove Wizard Award winners: Pitcher: Warren Spahn (Philadelphia Athletics) Catcher: Sammy White (Baltimore Orioles) First Baseman: Ferris Fain (Philadelphia Athletics) Second Baseman: Red Schoendienst (Baltimore Orioles) Third Baseman: Randy Jackson (Washington Senators) Shortstop: Phil Rizzuto (New York Yankees) Left Fielder: Frank Baumholtz (New York Yankees) Center Fielder: Jim Busby (Chicago White Sox) Right Fielder: Jim Rivera (Washington Senators) Mantle Captures 1953 Newcomer of the Year Award Tuesday, October 20th, 1953 His rookie season has paid off well for Mickey Mantle of the Cubs. He has hit the jackpot. The 22-year-old center fielder topped off his fine first season with the 1953 National League Newcomer of the Year Award. It was a season to remember for the Cubs newcomer. He wrapped up his inaugural year with a .312 batting average, 17 doubles, 5 triples and 44 home runs. Mantle also had 114 RBIs and scored 115 times. American League Best Rookie Named Tuesday, October 20th, 1953 Ray Jablonski put together some impressive numbers for Baltimore to garner enough votes for the American League Newcomer of the Year Award. The Orioles third baseman took the honor by hitting .291 in 154 games this season and finishing with 184 hits, 29 home runs, 99 RBIs and 97 runs scored. Loes Tops National League Pitchers Thursday, October 22nd, 1953 The Walter Johnson Award for 1953 has been presented and the National League winner is Billy Loes of Brooklyn. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Loes. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Dodgers star told reporters. Loes excelled with an impressive 20-4 record in 34 starts. In 278 innings he yielded 243 hits and 86 walks, while striking out 176 and compiling a fine 2.88 ERA. Walter Johnson Award Presented to Detroit Star Thursday, October 22nd, 1953 23-year-old Frank Sullivan of the Detroit Tigers put together a good year in 1953 for such a young player. Sullivan was named today as the winner of the American League Walter Johnson Award. Sullivan crafted an impressive 22-6 record and a 2.96 ERA. In 267.1 innings he allowed 230 hits, struck out 136, and walked 94. Ted Williams Named Premier NL Batsman Friday, October 23rd, 1953 Ted Williams got just what he wanted after deciding to enter the free-agent market: a strong offensive performance in 1953, highlighted by his selection as the National League Ty Cobb Award. The 35-year-old left fielder for Pittsburgh churned out a .332 batting average while amassing 187 hits, 26 doubles, 7 triples, 37 home runs, 102 runs and 93 RBIs. His performance virtually guarantees him a lucrative payday from whichever team he signs with during the offseason. Stan Musial Chosen AL's Best Hitter Friday, October 23rd, 1953 What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 1953 Ty Cobb Award in the American League. It had already been a very special season for Cleveland's Stan Musial, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake. All season long Stan Musial gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .334 as he collected 197 hits, 41 doubles, 10 triples, 40 home runs and 134 RBIs. Accomplishments Andy Pafko (Detroit) hits 3 HRs on 5/31 Eddie Mathews (Cincinnati), Gene Woodling (Browns), Stan Musial (Cleveland), Barney Olsen (Giants) each hit for the cycle. Johnny Sain (Browns) no hits Washington on 8/9 Ted Williams (Pirates) 2500th hit Stan Musial (Cleveland) and Ralph Kiner (Cleveland) 300th HR

1953 Hall of Fame Inductions
Charlie Gehringer Joins the Hall of Fame Saturday, October 31st, 1953 Charlie Gehringer played baseball a long time and he played it well. Then at the age of 39, he called it a career. In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, Gehringer has been voted into the Hall of Fame. "There is so much to love about this game," the newest honoree said during his induction speech at the North American BaseBall League Baseball Hall of Fame. "I couldn't imagine anything greater than my first major league game. Then I hit my first home run. Then the other landmarks came. But nothing tops today... to think that I made it to the Hall of Fame." The legendary second baseman put up some impressive numbers. Gehringer played in 2593 games, compiled a .318 batting average, hit 191 home runs, drove in 1492 runs and scored 1786 times during his career. North American BaseBall League Honors Ruth Saturday, October 31st, 1953 One of the best players ever, left fielder Babe Ruth, has received the ultimate honor for a baseball player -- being inducted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, which was held today, included tributes from his former teammates. One of them recognized his unparalleled work ethic, another his "naturally pure" swing, and yet another, his love for the game. Ruth received numerous awards during his playing days, but he said, nothing can compare to being enshrined into the Hall of Fame. In a career spanning 2750 games, Ruth batted .329 with 3204 hits, 766 home runs, 2239 RBIs and 2246 runs scored.

1954 Preseason Moves
Garagiola and Adams Dealt Friday, January 8th, 1954 After prolonged negotiations Brooklyn agreed to ship 27-year-old catcher Joe Garagiola to Baltimore for 25-year-old center fielder Herb Adams and 24-year-old minor league second baseman Skeeter Kell. The deal is awaiting confirmation from the league office but neither team expects any hang-ups. "It took longer than expected," said one GM, "but we knew that the deal was going to happen." For his 947-game career Garagiola has hit .274 with 937 hits, 429 RBIs, and 65 home runs. All-time Adams has played in 327 games, batted .300 with 1 home run and 212 base hits. Superstar Robinson Signs with Baltimore Tuesday, March 2nd, 1954 Baltimore fans could barely contain their jubilation as Jackie Robinson, considered one of the best at his position, opted to sign with the club. The deal, estimated at $296,080 over 2 years, is seen as a masterstroke for the General Manager's office and could well go down as one of the shrewdest moves in club history. Robinson is hitting the ball at a .305 clip over his career. In 1019 games he has delivered 1213 hits, 112 home runs with 635 RBIs and scored 661 times.

Bobby Avila Wins 1954 NL Batting Crown
Monday, September 27th, 1954 Cincinnati's Bobby Avila topped the National League in hitting this past year. The outstanding Redlegs second baseman posted a .358 average to garner the title. Avila 207 hits included 32 doubles, 3 triples and 12 home runs. This season's batting king also drove in 71 runs and scored 111 times. Aaron Takes Home AL Batting Title Monday, September 27th, 1954 For Hank Aaron of the Boston Red Sox, 1954 was a very good year. Aaron nabbed the American League batting championship with a .368 average. On the season, the 20-year-old right fielder registered 226 hits, 109 runs, 24 doubles, 12 triples, 24 home runs and 120 RBIs. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Sunday, September 12th, 1954 The biggest anxiety for 1954 new young players is getting drafted. For the young man with something to prove, simple entrance into the draft does not guarantee a big league contract. Some will suffer the excruciating torment of having to stand by as their competitors get picked before them, hoping that they get a slim chance to prove their skills anywhere. At any rate, teams now have 30 days to scout the draft pool before the draft is held. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Brooks Robinson, 17 year-old third baseman out of high-school. 2. Rocky Colavito, 21 year-old right fielder out of college. 3. Hector Lopez, 25 year-old third baseman out of college. 4. Elston Howard, 25 year-old left fielder out of college. 5. Earl Battey, 19 year-old catcher out of high-school. 6. Hal W Smith, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 7. Jim Pagliaroni, 16 year-old catcher out of high-school. 8. Jim King, 22 year-old right fielder out of college. 9. Johnny Blanchard, 21 year-old catcher out of college. 10. Ken Boyer, 23 year-old third baseman out of college.

Quite a pennant race in the AL. Five teams within three games of first place. Too bad Baltimore could only play the spoiler.

Thanks. I have a feeling Baltimore will be back and better than ever next year. With Grim and Conley coming back and maybe Kretlow will be consistent. The bats of Robinson and Jablonski hopefully will produce and if Thomas can hit more, except the production of home runs.
