OK, you like shockingly far apart? You'll love this, then.

How about 2002 Barry Bonds (.370/.582/.799, 268 OPS+) versus 1909 Bill Bergen (.139/.163/.156, 1 [as in, literally, one] OPS+)?

I simmed this 16,200 times so you can easily divide by 100 and approximate a single 162-game season:

Yes, that is an average season for the Drooping Bill Bergens averaging somewhere in between 3-159 and 2-160.

Here are how the "indiviual players" did on each team:

No commentary needed. Just gape in awe.

Just for kicks, here are some of the Barry Bondses' best hitting performances:

You might be wondering how one of the performances can result in 11 runs in 15 trips to the plate, with three homers and 14 RBI. That's not as hard to do as you might think at first when you consider the Bondses beat the Bergens 59-3, as they did in one of the games.

Barry Bonds RF really dragged that team down. A sub-500 OBP? Slacker.

Actually, I happen to think that how nine Bill Bergens did against nine Barry Bonds here is roughly the equivalent of how nine of any of us would do against nine Bill Bergens.

Out of curiosity - what were the best seasons by an individual Ichiro or Cabrera? Any statistical oddities - An Ichiro with 30 HR, or hitting .400? A Cabrera stealing a ton of bases, or tripling like crazy?

The closest real life got to being able to test that was the famous Detroit Tigers "team" for the game when the normal players went on strike to protest Ty Cobb being suspended.

No, I think the Marlins are a better test for that.

I didn't play them out as individual seasons, but as a 20,00 games sim. I would have to run 100+ different 162-game sims to get to that answer.

This is probably something that Markus and gang could work on for future iterations of the game.

Provide the ability to put replacement level (or identical level) players on teams in order to easily run statistical simulations like this.

Technically, this is what WAR and R/27 and other statistical calculations are trying to identify. However, it is really cool to do it yourself and see the results.

I think there are some factors that should probably be adjusted in order to limit some game induced outliers (injuries, hot and cold replacement level players, stadium, weather, stamina, etc...). These could be things that Markus and team could provide to do this quickly and on a more standard basis.

I could see a tournament to determine the best season of all-time. (Ruth '27 vs Bonds '04 finale?)

Cool stuff here.

Agreed, what do you think the pitching should be?
