The Hockey Facegen Project

Hey guys, so I know facegen isn't implemented into FHM yet but I thought about getting a head start so when it is available we can be ahead of the game!

I was going to start with all 30 NHL teams; and work my way from there. However there could be a few drawbacks, so I'm going to ask the community. Obviously the free version is the bald heads with watermarks. When facegen is turned on hase the FHM team decided what route we are going? Caps? Helmets? Chip in money from the community to do hair? Jeff could you possibly answer this or hint to some kind idea?

If I go ahead and start creating facegens with the free version and save them... Is it possible to go back and add hair at a later date? (To the already created and saved ones). Also I may have access to full version and can possibly play around with the hair. (I'd love to include facegen into the game with jerseys and actual hair...no helmets or hats; if we can provide a workaround.)

With that being said I'm also looking for input from the vets around here who have used facegen quite a bit. Looking for some tips and pointers... Do you guys mess with any of the sliders after you create a facegen? Also do you use side profile pictures or just use the straight on mugshots? I've done a bunch for personal use for OOTP and I noticed just straight on works great most of the time but importing into OOTP I've noticed changes/alters some of the facegen images on how they looked in the actual modeler program. Just looking for feedback and tips on that.

With having said all that I'd like to obviously create facegens for all players in all leagues so if any experienced guys or gals wanna help out I can add there name to the list below with the leagues and or teams they plan to do! Let me know what everyone's thoughts on this idea are!

NHL: Hockey13Playa (All 30 teams as of now)
AHL: ???
ECHL: ???
OHL: ???
QMJHL: ???
WHL: ???
British EIHL: ???
British EPIHL: ???
Finnish SM-Liiga: ???
German DEL: ???
Russian KHL: ???
Swedish Elitserien: ???
(other Leagues): ???

We can also do historic as well...

If this is a bad idea at the time being we can scrap the whole thing but I thought it'd be good!! Let's hear your feedback and comments!!!

I can do some NHL. Just let me know when FHM is going to have facegens. I have Chelios, Amante, Belfour, Roenick, Sharp & Toews already. I use then for OOTP.

If you want to split NHL we can... would you like to do East or West? We'd each have 15 teams!

Not doing 15 teams. I am still struggling to get to my MLB teams that have missing facegens. I can do the Blackhawks - current and some retired players. When they tell me that FHM will use facegens then I can do more.

Maybe split the work into divisions? I'll take whatever the hell stupid division the Blues and Blackhawks are in now after the Red Wings called the wah-mbulance and had themselves moved to the East, since they barely made the playoffs in the West last season.

Nooo, couldn't just move Nashville to the Southeast, Minnesota to the Central, and Winnipeg to the Northwest, could we? Noo, they had to moan...meh, whatever.

Enough of that rant. Let me know what you need, and I'll see what I can do. You should probably get started now, especially if you plan to do historical. I kinda doubt if this version will have facegen (too many bugs/problems with the core stuff to worry about extras), but the next probably will.

Also: This is your hookup to make facegens, everybody. Thanks to txranger for telling people about this site:

FaceGen Modeller: 3D Face Generator

I kinda hope they go with helmets when they do put it in. Keeps something on there to hide the logo mark you get when using that site. Hair wouldn't do that, and would probably just be extra work for the development team.

I am new to FaceGen, but why not just use the players photos from the NHL website? Resize to to 170x150, and they would fit perfectly.

EDIT: This is a couple samples of what mine looks like. I have NHL & AHL Team Logo's in, and I will be working on getting NHL players in.

Because when players switch teams the jersey does not. Now with OOTP it may be a tad different as MLB has caps, NHL does not. Hoping FHM uses helmets or hair. Also if FHM uses jerseys like OOTP it will make facegens look better.

Hats would be fine for now. Helmets would be good, but what about goalies?

Might have to go with hats for goalies. That, or masks open so you can see their faces. Probably hats, because old-school goalies had masks way different from the current style.

I can probably do the UK elite league. Actually I have the photos of practically all the players and think I have them at the right size just not had the time to name them properly and try them out. Some are better than others, the ones up on official team sites were usually ok but maybe for others had to just Google the player so maybe be a couple of years old and maybe a bit more of an action shot but better than nothing.

i know little of ootp, but i know i would rather see a player's actual face, with an inaccurate jersey, 100% of the time over a cartoony face, which is all i see facegen as. they feel childish/silly to me.

i feel like this will probably be a dichotomy of the baseball/hockey communities, though.

why don't we just do as the NHL2k series did and have actual faces with generic jerseys (all the same, white, etc) so they are interchangeable regardless of team?

The biggest advantage of facegen (for me) is that it works also for newly generated players, custom leagues and for lower level leagues that don't have facepacks for them. I like to "get personal" with my players (however weird that sounds) and to see their faces.

No offense, but I don't really care if the faces are real or not (especially fictional and new players ). Real pictures are better but they don't work everywhere and that's where I would like to use facegen (even with hats).

I even think I've read somewhere that facegen causes young players look young and they get older as the time goes. If this is right I find it pretty cool. Another possibilities like playoff beards are beyond cool

Just my 2 cents.

14 made facegens are cartoonish, real facegens are not in my opinion.

what's a real facegen? anyone got examples?

hell, i can't imagine too much work going into a relatively realistic facegen software. the graphical side wouldn't even be that hard.
