Most of the time I'll play with the current MLB data or I'll make a huge fictional league. When I actually play with a team, I like to rebuild it from the top down, especially if it's been a losing franchise. I'll sell off the older established players for younger prospects & lower ticket prices to reflect my rebuilding period in an attempt to get more people to the ballpark to see the young guys play. I'd rather see a team full of young potential talents work their butts off despite all the losses than an underachieving team of overpaid egos.

I play real MLB teams but fictional players. I play out the first game of every month and sim the rest month to month. Obviously stopping to deal with injuries, trades, call-ups etc. For the most part I allow the minor league managers to manage my minor league system. But I monitor it and make adjustments if I feel they are needed.
I also play in commissioner mode to keep from being fired. I like to go into rebuilding mode from time to time and prefer to see out the outcome.

Thanks for keeping the replies comin' in!
I've decided to take on the Mets... I created myself as a hot young prospect. I played out the first 6 games in the season in full. Now I am playing around 1 game per series... usually see the pitching match ups and which ever match up excites me is the game I play. I am 16-11 as of right now. And I am loving this game, and how in depth it is. Still need to get the giant learning curve down but its really fun. And I am simply amazed by all the customization features as well as facegen. Like I had said I created myself and seeing my in game as a facegen it looks spot on! Pretty damn awesome if you ask me! |

I play out my games.
I manage only, and let the AI handle everything else(I basically make the pitching changes and pinch hitting decisions). Been playing this way since OOTP7 or so. I think playing this way comes from all my years playing Strat and other similar games as a kid. I played these games almost exclusively solo. Playing wasn't as much about winning, it was more about creating my very own baseball world. One good thing about playing this way, I don't need house rules. I guess the bad thing would be, you can't really do a lot of bragging when you win a championship or two. |

Great thing about this game is there are so many ways to play. Usually I don't even manage a team, I like to follow the team and the stars of a league in commish mode, either historical or fictional leagues. Sometimes I do manage teams, again in either historical or fictional leagues - never been interested in playing the current 2013 roster.

With each new version, I'll set up a semi-fictional league using the MLB quickstart and do a fantasy draft where I get nothing but prospects and maybe one or two established players if I can, like Trout or Kershaw. I always allow draft pick trading so I can trade for high picks and get a good crop of young players each year. When players start getting close to 30 or getting too expensive, I'll usually jettison them for picks and/or prospects.

I can only get into Mets dynasties. The one expansion team dynasty I liked, the league got corrupted.
![]() As for the Mets, I micromanage the entire organization from the GCL on up. I set all the minor league lineups, rotations, and depth charts. I can't trust the AI to not be horrible with it.

I haven't decided on a location or name/logo yet!
As for why, because I am new to OOTP and love how you can customize anything and everything. So I wanted to start a dynasty as a team that isn't to good, and after I go through a rebuild phase to relocate them. I've never been a fan of the double New York teams in any sport so wanted to relocate them! And we all know NYY>NYM. So therefore they will be playing ball somewhere else!

Just got the game. First post, actually...
I played a game with the 1989 Cubs up until the August 1st limit on the demo. Then I played a game with the 1993 Blue Jays up until August 1st, realized I couldn't wait long enough to see if this game maybe went on sale in October, and purchased it. Now into Spring Training 1994 with the Jays. So far, the only way of playing that really interests me is a historical start with player development and fictional players. That is, I want a start that is familiar to me, with familiar names and faces (downloaded some face gens and logos... sweet), but I don't want things to play out completely historically. I want an alternate reality that starts at a point in time and can diverge wildly from there. Unknowns (fictional players) that rise to greatness are cool, but in my mind, they need some real players around them to provide the context that an entirely fictional league would lack. And my interest level in MLB has been pretty low for the last 5 years, so a 2013 start would almost feel like a fictional start at this point... When I played the Cubs, I played out a lot of my games and found a lot of interesting decisions. When I played the Jays, I found that I had my 9 hitters that were the best hitters on the team, and 4 backups who were mostly defensive specialists (actually, this being the 1993 Jays' weak pitching staff, for a while I ran with 13 pitchers and only 3 backups). So there wasn't a lot of pinch-hitting or substituting to do. And it's mostly a station-to-station team, so really in-game strategy was pretty minimal altogether. So I seemed a large percentage of the season. Still tons of fun, but I think from now on I will play mostly NL teams or remove the DH. Not going to remove the DH with the 93 Jays, because Molitor isn't much of a 3rd baseman. I am wondering if maybe the trade AI is a little weak and I should play more for realism/sim than to try to win. But considering I started with a defending WS winner, I figure this can be a game to just mercilessly game the system and see how well I can do. Anyway, despite trading for Juan Gonzalez and Jay Bell in 1993, I still lost in the playoffs to Seattle. So, next year, I signed Randy Johnson in free agency to try and keep that from happening again... Unfortunately, didn't get to see Olerud hit .400, which was my real goal of starting with this team. .389 with 32 HR's is pretty good, though. |
