AI Disconnect - Free Agents
I've noticed that certain (usually declining) players are asking for too much money in accordance with their abilities.
The disconnect in the game seems to be that the same AI directing the demand of the player is at the same time recognizing that the player is asking too much and he goes unsigned. A concrete example is in my game I did not offer an extension to Adam Wainwright after the 2018 season. He is clearly on the downside at age 37. In 2017 he had an excellent season. 15-7, 2.83, 1.01 WHIP. 2018 showed a steep decline at 10-10, 4.07, 1.31 WHIP. All of his ratings dropped. Out of 20 he is now a 12/14/15. His velocity fell from low to mid 90s to 86-88. All of his pitches are now rated just above average. He has 2.5 stars current and potential. His demand when negotiating an extension was 4 years, 21MM per. Forget that. Now his demand as a FA is 2 years at about 18MM. No team is showing interest and spring training is starting. A pitcher like him is not entirely washed up yet. IRL he would get a contract, I think. I've seen this repeatedly in the game. He'll sit out this entire year. Maybe even the next, and then retire ungracefully. Clearly, the AI is recognizing that his ask is way too high, but the AI is also calculating the ask. Seems odd to me. |

I see this issue posted from time to time yet it's never happened in my leagues. That suggests to me that there is some disconnect in the AI eval sequence. How is your AI eval set up? I have also read that if teams have too much cash player demands stay high. That makes sense. From a player perspective the actual amount of money matters less than rank ie " I want to be the 5th best paid etc.
Actually I just looked at FA signings in my league as I'm in the last week of ST and I have the opposite problem. Players who have no business getting any decent contract are getting ridiculous term and money. I'd much prefer that declining marginal players go unsigned. See belowFoote got 7 years $70M Carranza got 7 years $77M Note that one is fragile and the other is wrecked. The AI seems unable to include injury history into evaluation. I suspect that my AI eval of 30 30 30 10 may be the problem. On balance I think you are better off than me.

Often I have found that, when a player has a ridiculous demand listed, if you enter the screen to actually offer a contract, his demand is lowered than it is on the player screen and the free agent list screen. But, not always. Some players, just like other humans, can be too unreasonable and too greedy.
You can also try offering a contract at lower that when he's demanding and negotiate a deal that is less than whatever his demand is. Just don't lowball him too much that you make him decide to cut off all further talks with you. |

And yes, I think I'd rather have my problem. Also, there does seem to be a lot of money sloshing around the league. The first few years every team seemed impoverished. Now almost all of the teams are quite well off. I'd try negotiating an extension, but he never got into the range of reasonableness. His demand has now lessened to 2 years, but still wants 16.8MM per. |

![]() I can honestly say that I have always seen aging vets take less money and years and at worst in up in my Indy leagues or Asia. Last edited by SirMichaelJordan; 09-08-2013 at 05:41 PM. |
