Ways to get the game to run faster?

I'm simming an MLB league and it's going more slowly than usual. Any ways to get it to run faster? I already did things like deleting players who never reached the majors once they retire and I don't save replays, news logs, injury logs or transaction logs.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you disable baseball cards?

Delete All Messages, or go into the folder in Windows Explorer (or Mac equivalent) and delete all of them past a certain real world date that you can live without.

This is from some time ago, but portions of it should still apply:

How To Improve Auto-Play Speed

Auto-play speed is affected by a number of things, most importantly your computer's hardware and the scope of your league. But, there are a few things you can do to improve the Auto-play speed:

1. Reduce the number of game logs and box scores you save. Go to Game Setup in the OOTP Menu. In the Global Setup tab on the left, edit down the Box Scores and Game Logs settings in the Auto-Save & Log Options section. The fewer box scores and game logs you save, the faster the game will auto-play.

2. In the same place as #1, reduce the frequency of auto-saving (if you dare). Less saves = more risk, but faster auto-play.

3. Go to OOTP Preferences in the Game Menu. In the Interface tab on the left, select "Simple dialog (faster)" for Auto-play Display. This will cause standings and stats to be hidden during auto-play but it will also speed things up.

4. Don't generate almanacs annually. Unclick the option in Game Setup, Almanac Options.

5. Don't generate baseball cards. Unclick the option in Game Setup, Player and Picture Options.

5. Some users have reported poor performance when they have an anti-virus program running. While we would not recommend you go without virus protection, you may want to consider disabling it temporarily to determine whether this might be a cause of poor auto-play performance for you. Some of this may be due to the fact that the game is constantly creating new dynamic report files, and your virus program may be taking the time to scan each of these.
EDIT: Actually, ALL of it still applies, I think.

You can also delete a bunch of files after each year.

Quote:
Files That Are SafeTo Delete To Improve Game Performance

messages - delete entire contents of this folder; NOTE: ALSO DELETEMESSAGE.DAT.
news/html - delete contents of all folders except images; do not delete thestyles.css file.
news/txt - delete contents of leagues* and teams** folders; do not deleteanything from players folder.

* Definitely delete the log.txt files generated from game logs. The other filesare not large or numerous, so consider leaving them alone.
** You can find, isolate, and save the team numbered files that correspond tothe team whose news is to be kept, if any.

For the anti-virus, don't disable it, just add OOTP's saved games folder to the program's exclusion list.

Even though it may be "safe" to delete these files, I would be interested in knowing the consequences of deleting the various files included in the folders noted above. I know, for example, that the consequences of deleting files in the news/html/players file is minimal because you can always recreate this html file in the game. The actual consequence, however, is that you lose that "snapshot in time" of that player (again, a minimal consequence to most gamers). But what, for example - if anything - are you losing permanently by deleting the contents of the txt/teams file?

I suppose knowing what the files in each folder would go along way to determining this. Some of this I know, but I suspect others here could relatively quickly write knowledgeably and definitively on ALL of these folders/files. That would be cool and helpful ;-)

This would also make it MUCH faster to copy the game files between two computers, so I'm very interested in knowing what is lost from deleting those files as well.

The files you are deleting are all regenerated again during the next season. You're not "losing" anything. In effect, old messages from the past season, boxscores, those kind of things are what you delete. They get overwritten by the game during the next season if you don't. It just speeds things up because OOTP now doesn't have to overwrite files.

In the case of a player who wants to save all his messages, etc etc, the Almanac is an option. I know a lot of people don't use it, it takes a long time to run for large leagues, but I use it all the time and will never run a league again without using it.
