I think it's starting to get into thinking about retiring time for De La Cruz. What did you give the man for his chin ratings, a 12 or something?

NOT A DRAW!!

Elmer Ray's fight just makes me sad, that sucks. However, it was good to see Mundt and some of the other forum guys pick up a wins. David Kane lives! I hope he still hate watches me when ever my guy fights.

He has been impressive so far. It will be a great story if he can get himself into the WCC for '09.

DLC's chin vs knockdown and knockout is a 6, so not too good. I think maybe the IBL will have to step in and suspend him for the third series of bouts in the IC. The guy is getting killed, and it's a shame because he went 12 rounds with Schmeling and was 9-2 after KOing Fred Fulton in June '07. Perhaps I should have put him in the Development League instead, although he's had the same amount of fights as your guy.

That was a really bad loss for Elmer, although Cantatore does pack quite a punch (five of his seven IBL wins have been by knockout). Hopefully he can bounce back, but it's frustrating that he has not been able to make the most of his opportunities. He's still young, though, so maybe he just needs to mature a bit.

Well, those ratings aren't as bad as I thought but yes not too good at all. The IBL almost pretty much has to suspend him for the third series. Man, if this was real life the IBL & state commissions would get killed if they let this dude fight again in a few months. It does suck that he seems to have flamed out but I guess being a super-aggressive fighter with no chin is not the best style to succeed with.

Bah, Elmer just makes me right now. Still, to make the WCC he needs to finish top 6 correct? So, hopefully, he takes care of business the rest of the way and can grab one of those top seeds. Course, not making the WCC till he hits prime might not be a bad thing either.

There will be seven fight reviews in the May '08 Boxing Monthly, with three of those WBC title fights. Part of the process of getting the non-IBL boxing world more fleshed out, even if only for my own storytelling benefit. Should have it done sometime during the next two days. Once that is done, the first June WCC fight card is a huge one, the June 7 event featuring two world championship bouts: Norton-Jackson (heavyweight) and Bautista-Sanchez (featherweight). There might be an article for early June before then, or maybe just an updated list of the scheduled WCC bouts.

BOXING MONTHLY

VOLUME 30, ISSUE 5 - MAY 2008

(following are selected entries from the magazine's "Fight Review" section)

Saturday 3 May: Boston, MA, USA
Jimmy Garrison (USA, 21-2-1(14)) UD12 Mike Glover (USA, 24-1(14))
(WBC welterweight title fight)

In something of a boilover, Kansas City's Jimmy Garrison ventured to Boston and gave hometown favourite Mike Glover a boxing lesson. Garrison scored a convincing unanimous decision win to claim the vacant WBC welterweight title (118-110, 115-113, 118-110). Garrison outlanded Glover by almost twice as many punches (394-202), with his penetrating left jab and sizzling combinations being especially effective. This particular alphabet championship has lacked distinction since Jose Napoles vacated it in October '06, with Garrison being the third fighter to hold it in the last seventeen months. Whether his title reign ends up being a long one or not remains to be seen, but he has certainly made a positive start.

Saturday 3 May: Boston, MA, USA
Cassius Clay (USA, 7-0(5)) TKO4 Maurice Simmons (USA, 11-5-1(7))
(junior-lightweight division)

In another eye-catching performance, Brooklyn's Cassius Clay decimated Philadelphia native Maurice Simmons on the undercard of the Garrison-Glover world title fight. Clay's lightning fists gave Simmons terrible trouble, and the bout was called off midway through the 4th. Simmons was never knocked down, but he was wearing some alarming swelling under his right eye and Clay had landed three times as many punches as him. Referee James Greene felt the Pennsylvanian was incapable of competing, so he stopped the bout. Clay was unimpressed, and said as much in an animated, colourful post-fight interview that brought a number of amused smiles from the journalists clamouring for a sound bite. Without a doubt, the young man is a future world title contender, as well as a great salesman.

Saturday 10 May: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Felix Trinidad (Puerto Rico, 16-0(13)) TKO8 Alfonzo Monzant (Venezuela, 25-4(19))
(junior-welterweight division)

Puerto Rico's Felix Trinidad stepped between the ropes for the first time since December, recording a convincing 8th round stoppage of former world title challenger Alfonzo Monzant. The Venezuelan was not the opponent he was hoping to go up against in his first bout for the year, as an April clash with Louisville's Michael Pattinson had to be called off due to injury. Trinidad had been looking to secure a world title shot by the end of the year, but that looks doubtful, especially considering that Eddie Perkins is now the unified WBA/WBC champion following his March win over Bruno Arcari. Trinidad's father and trainer confirmed that they are hoping to secure a fight with another Venezuelan in former WBO/IBO titlist Alejandro Vielma for later in the year. Vielma returned to action this month after more than a year of inactivity, and would certainly be a challenging proposition for the 19 year-old Trinidad.

Friday 16 May: New York, NY, USA
Eduardo Briceno (Venezuela, 3-0(1)) TKO3 Mario Lansman (USA, 4-3-1(2))
(featherweight division)

New York-based Venezuelan Eduardo Briceno opened up ESPN's Friday Night Fights card at the St. Nicholas Arena, not bad for a 19 year-old in just his fourth pro bout. Briceno looked fantastic in dispatching Bronx native Mario Lansman in the 3rd round, dropping him twice on the way to a TKO victory. The mild-mannered young man is certainly making a name for himself, and really impressed FNF commentator Teddy Atlas with his polished performance.

Saturday 17 May: Mexico City, DF, Mexico
Oscar Jimenez (Mexico, 25-3(21)) UD12 Raul Martinez (Mexico, 27-6-1(19))
(WBC lightweight title fight)

Oscar Jimenez regained the title he unexpectedly lost to current IBL competitor Asdrubal Rosales last July, defeating compatriot Raul Martinez in his second title defense. Martinez claimed the vacant title in November with a win over Puerto Rico's Daniel Seda and retained it in a February rematch, but struggled against the quicker Jimenez, who took a comfortable unanimous decision verdict (118-110, 117-111, 119-109). Martinez had been on a three-fight winning streak since current world lightweight champion Patricio Marquez stopped him in the 7th round of a March '07 clash, but it's unlikely he'll be getting a rematch with Jimenez considering the one-sided nature of the fight. Jimenez had only fought once since losing to Rosales, but the WBC felt he was worthy of a chance to regain the title, and he grabbed it with both hands.

Saturday 24 May: Las Vegas, NV, USA
Donnie Bates (USA, 42-3-1(32)) KO9 Larry Martell (USA, 28-5(20))
(WBC heavyweight title fight)

The dire state of the heavyweight division outside of the IBL was once again on display this month, as 36 year-old former WBC champion Donnie Bates regained the title he lost to Ken Norton in November '04 with a 9th round knockout of Larry Martell. It was the Houston native's fourth fight since announcing his comeback to the sport in February '07, and Martell's second defense after defeating Jamal Close to win the vacant belt last July. What makes Bates's "success" so ironic is that it was the efforts of Ohio's Michael Dokes while making his own comeback with the IBL that actually inspired Bates to return to the ring. Since then, Dokes retired for a second time and then decided to give it yet another shot by fighting Tyrell Biggs in March. Dokes has said he will not retire for good until he has secured a rematch with Bates of their infamous drawn September '02 title bout. So it looks like history will be repeating itself. Unfortunately.

Saturday 24 May: Las Vegas, NV, USA
Alejandro Vielma (Venezuela, 31-3-1(23)) TKO5 Leron Mathis (USA, 28-3(17))
(junior-welterweight division)

Former WBO and IBO 140-pound champion Alejandro Vielma stepped back into the ring for the first time in fourteen months on the undercard of the Bates-Martell farce, ending a period of activity that some were refering to as a retirement even though he claimed the IBO belt in his last fight. He didn't take the easy route for his return bout, taking on the New Yorker Leron Mathis, who challenged Eddie Perkins for the WBA championship in March '07. It was expected to be a contest, but Vielma made short work of Mathis, dropping him in the 2nd and 4th rounds before pounding him into submission in the 5th, leading to the referee jumping in shortly before the bell. Vielma has been spoken of as a future opponent for Puerto Rico's rising star Felix Trinidad, who defeated Vielma's compatriot Alfonzo Monzant on the 10th of May. When reporters raised the possibility of such a fight, Vielma appeared incredulous and stated in rapid-fire, heated Spanish that he was not going to be a "stepping stone for some teenager who hasn't proven anything yet."

Yep, just search the thread for Mundt and you'll find the posts he features in. Most recently he stopped Botha in his second International Conference bout, which just happened to be a rematch of a bout they had nine months earlier.

It was an unfortunate situation when both Scott Mundt and Ian Lord missed out on the World Championship Conference. Especially Lord, who lost by disqualification to Fred Boatwright after having a great run as the Inter-Continental Champion. I really hope both of them can get through '08 unscathed and earn a WCC berth for '09.

And like a year further into the timeline as well. You've done a great job with this thread.

SATURDAY 7 JUNE 2008

World Championship Conference
to be expanded in 2009

Story by Jonathan Gomez

Speaking at yesterday's press conference for tonight's blockbuster MGM Grand fight card, International Boxing League president James Molk revealed that his organisation plans to expand the total number of competitors per division in next year's World Championship Conference from sixteen to twenty. The announcement was not a huge surprise, as it's something that had emerged in various rumours for the last couple of months. The league is going ahead with the expanded field for a number of reasons. Firstly, it will accommodate fighters who elect to move up a weight class without affecting the number who are "promoted" from the International Conference. Current world middleweight champion Les Darcy and former flyweight champion Candido Tellez have already confirmed that they will be taking this step, even though WCC competitors have until the end of November to inform the IBL.

The change could allow as many as ten fighters from any particular division to move into the WCC from the IC at the end of '08. Molk stated that the league believed allowing only six of the 36 IC competitors to be promoted was "a bit harsh and restrictive", as it's likely that some fighters with only a single IC loss during the season will miss out on promotion. That is still a possibility under the expanded format, but a reduced one. There has been a basic consensus amongst league officials that, with the amount of talented pugilists under its banner, more of them should be given the opportunity to position themselves for a wolrd title shot. In addition, with the popularity of the WCC, more competitiors means more fights. However, the expansion will have no bearing on the rules for the 2008 WCC, under which those ranked from #10 to #15 at the end of the season will be relegated to the IC. The extra places in 2009 will not save them from relegation. Molk confirmed that a decision on the relegation/promotion numbers for 2009 and beyond will be made during the next couple of weeks.

Sparks fly at MGM weigh-ins

Friday afternoon's weigh-ins for the three WCC bouts on tonight's card proved to be a lively affair, with a good deal of trash talking being exchanged by the camps of the fighters involved, aswell as the fighters themselves. Mexico's former world welterweight champion Enrique Diaz did not take kindly to the brash attitude of Puerto Rico's Carmelo Barea, who is ranked at #8 but brings an eight-fight winning streak going back to September '06 into their clash. Diaz has not stepped into the ring since being comprehensively dethroned by his rival Emile Griffith in January. He questioned Barea's credentials simply be questioning the quality of the opponents he has defeated during his run of victories, and promised to give him a "reality check" in their clash. A loss will make Barea's 8-0 run meaningless, but if he is able to score an upset, Diaz will plummet out of world title contention.

There was genuine respect between Dominican world featherweight champion Miguel Bautista and his Mexican challenger, the Olympic gold medallist Salvador Sanchez. The same could not be said for their respective veteran trainers, Inoel Flores and Octavio Cardenas, who have had a long and often bitter rivalry during their time in the sport. In an unseemly display, they exchanged verbal snipes while their charges stepped onto the scales. The title fight will be a rematch of an IBL Challenger's tournament semi-final from October '06, where Sanchez dominated and knocked out Bautista in the 7th round. The Mexican went on to win the tournament but lose in his March '07 title challenge to compatriot Gilberto Vasquez, the only defeat of his pro career to date. Meanwhile, Bautista dropped a split decision to Keith Harrison in December '06 before running off a three-fight winning streak that concluded with his triumph over Vasquez in September '07.

Sanchez downplayed the importance of their previous clash, saying that Bautista is a much more confident and accomplished fighter now than he was back then. He noted Bautista's impressive efforts not only in dethroning Vasquez, but also in retaining the title in their January rematch, which Bautista had the better of despite it being judged as a draw. Sanchez said he'll have to be at his very best to emerge victorious, while Bautista was just as complimentary. He spoke of Sanchez's explosive wins over Orlando Salido in September and Vicente Saldivar in January and how he'll have to be weary of the 21 year-old's punching power. The fight's outcome will help to determine who challenges for the title in stage three of the WCC, with some observers predicting that if Bautista is defeated but gives a good account of himself, a rematch is likely. On the other hand, a Bautista victory makes the situation a bit uncertain, as there's a number of possible contenders.

One aspect of the Ken Norton-Peter Jackson world heavyweight championship showdown that has been surprisingly ignored (at least in the US) is Jackson's chance to create history and become the first Australian to claim the greatest prize in sports since Michael Fogarty held it from 1935 to 1937. 71 years is a long drought in any sport, and in the opinion of many, Jackson has a genuine chance to end it. Things didn't work out too well for him when he first fought for the championship in March '07 and Terone Haynes obliterated him in two rounds, but most observers see Norton as a better match-up for him, despite the fact that the San Diego Adonis was the one who took the title from Haynes last September. Norton's first defense against Max Schmeling was a shaky one, as he climbed off the canvas in round two to stop the German in the 4th.

If Jackson's entourage is any indication of his chances, he'll give Norton a lot of trouble. He was supported by fellow Australian IBL combatants Les Darcy, the world middleweight champion, and Jeff Fenech, who challenges Carlos Zarate for the bantamweight championship on July 26. Along with at least a dozen other hangers-on, they gave as good as they received to Norton's bloated, boisterous group, which included a couple of now retired fighters in former middleweight alphabet titlist James Toney and former heavyweight IBL Americas champion Sam McVey, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in April. While Jackson appeared relaxed and easy going, Norton was all business, deadly serious. His trainer Ernie Bennett was often whispering in his ear, keeping him focused on the task at hand.

Norton has spoken in the past of his legacy, and this is really a must-win if he wants to continue growing it and possibly set up a third meeting with Terone Haynes. The Californian slugger would also like to be able to achieve something that Haynes could not, which is to make two successful defenses of the IBL title. With the attitude that the IBL has had towards its heavyweight division this year, it's not clear who would next challenge for the title, regardless of what happens tonight. Much like with the Bautista-Sanchez stoush, the possibility of a Norton-Jackson rematch has been speculated on if Norton was to lose the championship. There's a number of important heavyweight contests scheduled for stage two, and the results of those will paint a picture of what is to come later in the year.
