The PEBA is looking for a Community Manager

Are you the outgoing type? Do you enjoy making friends, building connections, and networking? Would you welcome an entryway into OOTP online league administration? Then you may be just what the Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance (PEBA) is looking for! We are seeking someone who can:

• Promote the PEBA in the OOTP forums and elsewhere
• Recruit new members and maintain a waiting list of applicants
• Manage special events such as the live Winter Meetings and Amateur Draft
• Foster and encourage discussion between members
• Promote PEBA writing - both its creation by members and its discovery by non-members

You do not need to have current or prior experience with the PEBA, nor do you need to manage a team. If you happen to have additional interest in managing a team, that may be possible to arrange (if not a PEBA team, then a team in our sister league, The League of the Rising Sun). What matters, though, is that you are truly passionate about facilitating communication between current and future league members.

What's in it for you? For one thing, you'll be assuming an administrative role with one of OOTP's best-known online leagues. The PEBA is a story-focused league that has been in play since 2007. During that time, we have built up an extensive collection of stories that have attracted attention from both within and without the OOTP community. We have featured heavily in OOTP promotional endeavors and have inspired major writing undertakings. Some examples include:

• Interviews with OOTP Developments
• See the PEBA on $25 a Day - An e-book by Ron Collins (available from Amazon and Smashwords) (read the interview with Brad Cook)
• Participation in the Grand Championship League (which we won!)
• The History of the PEBA, a 10-year anniversary look back at the fictional origins of the league
• The PEBAverse: Greatest Hits from the First 10 Years, a collection of our best writing
• Of course, several PEBA members are also OOTP Beta Team members who help shape the game's development. We also are the official home of Frank Esselink's StatsLab, the indispensable OOTP online league utility suite

This is the kind of passionate environment you will be involving yourself with. The benefits can be difficult to quantify. During my time as PEBA's commissioner and community manager, cultivation of organizational, communication, and political skills (yes, it can be a political job at times) have proven invaluable in my professional and personal life. I also cultivated friendships within the PEBA, and contacts external to the PEBA who have literally changed the course of my life.


Expanding on that second point, through my role with the PEBA, I met people who set me on a whole new career path. The PEBA's unique writing focus draws a lot of eyeballs beyond the OOTP community. People get interested and invested in the league's evolution even if they're not members. Some of those people get in touch to learn more about the league. In my case, one thing led to another and suddenly I have partners that have helped me start an exciting new professional creative endeavor.

Ultimately, you may not build a new career for yourself out of your PEBA experience, but you're almost certainly going to develop new skills and make new friends. It's a growth and social opportunity. And if you have ambitions of running your own league someday, what better addition to your résumé than to say you worked with one of OOTP's most visible leagues? There may even be an opportunity to take over primary responsibility for running the PEBA itself! Consider this a foot in the door for taking on a larger role in the OOTP online world.

Isn't that something? Nearly six years later, The PEBA is still a showcase for your excellent work. On more than one occasion, I have been asked about where our league's original art got its start, and I take each opportunity to refer the questioner to truthserum and the other generous artists of the OOTP community who helped us out. It's a great example of how one good turn begets another.

The same principle applies to the PEBA's search for a new community manager. Just like truthserum didn't expect his PEBA art to be prominently featured for years and years, and just like I never expected to embark on a whole new career thanks to my role as league commissioner, a new PEBA CM is likely to reap unexpected benefits. The PEBA is one of the most visible operations in the OOTP online league community. There is surely something to take out of your experience with the league. It can serve as your entry point to managing a PEBA team, or it can build your experience and cred for launching your own online league. You may even make a mark that lasts for years, just like truthserum.
