What would prevent players from gaining experience by playing a position?

I'm running a league using neutralized stats and random debut. I have it set to base fielding ratings on "entire career".

Does this setting make it impossible to train a guy up by playing him at a position he's not rated (or not rated highly) in? Even a SS with good skill ratings can't gain a 3B or 2B ratings, because the experience points won't budge off 0.

I haven't seen this problem in other leagues. Anyone know the explanation?

Thanks.

From my exp trying to get a real player to learn a new position during ST & regular season he will never get above a 2 or 3 and then it resets back to 0 come the off season. Also check his ratings if it is 0 then he wont ever learn it. Taking say Albert Pujols and try putting him in LF won't work, even though he played some LF IRL.

I think you need to turn player development on to let experience accumulate at a new position. Recalc before the next season will keep the development from taking players too far out of their historical norms.

This is consistent with what I've seen in other leagues. Experience-based development that is then wiped out at recalc (it would actually be cool and sensible if gained experience was immune from recalc).

At any rate, I do have development turned on, but turned down by about 25%.

My experience with real players has been that they learn a position reasonably quickly if they have good skill ratings and/or they player a higher position in the hierarchy (i.e. a SS learning to play 3B or 1B). But I can't get anyone to budge in this league.
