Do I know you from somewhere?

So I had recently completed a minor league trade with the Chicago Cubs, giving up a decent pitching prospect who was being squandered on my AAA team (my bullpen is pretty stacked at the moment), to get an infield prospect in return.

That was maybe a week ago (real time). Today, a story pops up in my inbox about a Chicago player getting injured off the field. It was Evan Crawford, the pitching prospect who had been in my minor league system, and my immediate thought was, "Oh man, I traded him just in time for him to get injured. Funny."

Only... I realized after a second that this story had him listed as a left fielder. Did Crawford have potential as a batter, and I had missed it? That didn't make sense. And then suddenly it hit me that I HADN'T traded Evan Crawford to the Cubs. I had traded a different pitching prospect. Puzzled, I looked at the news story again - it was Evan Crawford, no doubt, same facegen and everything, wearing a Cubs uniform. I checked my AAA team - yep, there he was, still pitching for me.

Seriously, look at this:

They're not the same player. Mine is 30 years old, Chicago's is 28. But both are real players - according to their History pages, my Evan Crawford was drafted in 2008, while Chicago's was drafted in 2009. My guess is that OOTP has a single facegen file for "Evan Crawford" and used it for both guys, but it threw me for one hell of a loop.

By the way, check your \Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 14\saved_games\[league name].lg\news\html folder. You will see that facegen files are named for player ID's, not names. Now check these dudes out in the player editor and confirm that they are two different players with different player ID's.

If so, NOW go a bit crazy thinking about how similar the faces are for these two different players. If you look really closely at the two images, I think you can see slight variations such as skin tone, width of noses, and eyebrow color.

Or have I myself entered . . . The Twilight Zone?

Yep, two different player ID's, and you're right, the nose and skin tone are just the slightest bit different.

EDIT: Confirmed in Photoshop. Nose is a pixel bigger on either side, and skin tone is off by 3 hex numbers.

Thanks, Bru. You've now made this horrifying.

The LF Evan Crawford hasn't played affiliated ball for 2 years, I will most likely retire him in the DB.

Heh, I did not realize that we were talking about real ballplayers. The better known Evan Crawford is a MR with the Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. And, uh, how do I put this? Umm, well, he's a white guy. You may want to do some editing and picture refreshing.

Ah! Note to Bruce: READ THE ENTIRE POST!

I think I missed or skimmed the part of your post under the photos. I was arrested by those piercing eyes!

Since he's playing indy ball this year I think we should keep him as active. So I changed him back. You can always retire him again if you disagree

I see a fantastic activating/retiring battle beginning to wage here.

Hah!

Afraid not. Sorry to disappoint. You'll have to watch a ballgame to get your entertainment for the day

haveband and I work well together so we'll sort this one out. Or he can just do as he likes since he's the boss.

EDIT: Just as a note, I changed the pitcher to Evan S. Crawford, since he's the one that shouldn't have the black facegen, which shows up correctly on the outfielder. So the facegen issue should be sorted as of next roster update. Anyone who makes a facegen for the pitcher will just need to use the initial.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.
