Salary Settings Question

Alright so I'm new to the game, and I've attempted 2 different Leagues, both using real major league settings etc. Now in both of them I'd make it to the first offseason and than I quit both times because players would request absolutely rediculous contracts. Roy Halladay wants a 6 year 25 million dollar per year contract. Carlos Beltran wan'ts a 5 year 22 million per year contract. Paul Konerko want's a 6 year 19 million per year contract. Now I get they may not get exactly what they're looking for just like in real life. (I think for example Nick Swisher wanted a 6 year 120 million dollar contract this past offseason.) Now I never attempted to sign any of these guys so I don't know exactly what they would wind up with for contracts, but it just seems a little rediculous. Do you guys mess with the Salary Settings or do you leave them at the default settings? If you do mess with them than what do you usually set them to? I really want to have contracts as realistic as possible.

I leave them alone for modern. Low ball them and then when they counter try the middle ground then try offering them 15-20% less. I resigned Konerko to a 3 yr 13 per deal with a no trade clause.

Alright I guess it's time to see how good my low-balling skills are

Leave them alone. In my game all the players you mentioned asked for similar numbers but settled for far less. Swisher 5yrs 70m, Halladay 2yrs 34m, Beltran 2yrs 31m Konerko retired. I was able to sign Cano for 6yrs 126m, by far the biggest contract given out for the 2013-2014 off season. The biggest free agent signing 2014-2015 off season was Asdrubal Cabrera at 5yrs 85m.

Quitting your games because players are *asking for* these contracts, but not necessarily getting them strikes me as similar to giving your child up for adoption because he asks for a pony. Don't give up the kid, just don't give him the blasted pony!

Players make dumb requests all the time, and if they keep being unreasonable, they'll go unsigned into the mid-Spring before settling for something more realistic. Just like in real life.
