25 man roster after season ends

I play an MLB setup with default dates for drafts, etc. After the season ends, when is the best time to adjust your roster....ie get players moved back to the minors, etc? As soon as your season ends? Before the end of the calendar year? Before spring training the following season?

I usually do a full organizational roster adjustment as soon as the off-season begins, sending guys up or down. Then, I fill up the active roster for spring training games so I can get the top prospects in my organization some more playing time before their seasons begin.

I've noticed though, that doing so causes the game to count the spring training game roster moves to count against their option years, so if you're running into a couple of guys who are in their last option year, they either have to stay with the big club out of spring training, or get DFA'd.

In any case, I only bring AAA and AA guys into spring training though, because they're the only ones who'd have a reasonable shot at making the opening day ML roster. A ball guys don't.

For me I dont call players up unless they are FA after the season, Minor or Major. A prospect that could make the team out of ST next season (and still has option years) or in some cases a player that I like that I want to see what he can do. I have had R.A. Dickey on my team since 2004 and for some reason despite the fact the AI automatically declines him arbitration he still is at AAA for me with about 30IP in the majors. He recently suffered a 6 month injury so he won't be playing for my team the rest of the season. This past season I traded or DFA'd 5 players after ST. 2 were claimed by other teams and since they both made decent $$ I let them walk after failing to trade them to the team that claimed them.1 Joaquin Benoit is at AAA for me making $300k (high for my league) and the other a middle IF who has about 60 ML AB's I traded for Gavin Floyd who will be my #3 SP in 2009.

Here's what I do.

On the first day of the offseason, if they're on my 40-man roster and they're not already on my active roster, I call them up to the active roster - there's no need to send them back to the minors even if they're most likely destined to go there once next season starts. If there's anyone in my minors who needs protecting from the Rule 5 draft, I put them on the active/40-man roster before December.

Once spring training gets close, I look at my team - if I think I'm a little thin at a particular position going into ST, I might add some of my prospects to the active/40-man roster to give them a try.

As soon as Spring Training starts, *anyone* who is on your 40-man roster but NOT on your active roster (i.e. in the minors) will be charged with an option year. For this reason, I keep all my 40-man guys on the active roster until the last possible moment (usually a day or two before opening day), as you never know when an injury might make room for a player you originally thought you'd have to cut - no sense in wasting an option year.

During the offseason, I use a separate text file to track which of the players on my 40-man roster I think have a legitimate chance to make the 25-man roster next year and which ones are likely cuts, but in the game they stay on the 40-man roster the whole offseason/preseason/spring training.

That's what works best for me.

One more thing I want to add: I like to prune out players on my 40-man roster during the offseason who have used their last option year and could still have some trade value to a more deperate organization. Sometimes it hurts, because you might find 1 or 2 guys who are proven winners, with + WARs, but who won't likely be opening day active roster guys. These roster move "victims" are usually bench guys, aging vets, or young pups who might have hit a ceiling too soon.

If you can open up 1 or 2 40-man roster spots to give rising stars a shot in ST, it's help, especially if you're looking more long term that winning THIS season.

That's how it is in real life. All that matters in regards to whether an option is used or not is where the player is during the regular season. If he's on the 40-man roster but in the minors, then he's using an option. If he is instead on the 40-man roster and 25-man active roster, then he's not using an option. (In real life players can spend up to 19 days in the minors during the regular season without it counting as an option; in OOTP the threshold is just one day.)

During real-life spring training, players routinely get optioned to the minors as the big league club slowly trims its 40 players down to the 25 allowed for opening day.
