Cubs Win Early Showdown With Dodgers

Monday, 5/04/64 AP--In a battle of division contenders, the Chicago Cubs proved they were more than up to the task as they beat the defending World Series Champion, Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-1.

Although it wasn't Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale is the second half of the workhorse duo and took the hill against Cubs ace, Larry Jackson. The game played out rather evenly as each team scratched and clawed for their runs. The Cubs got started in the third when C Johnny Blanchard laced a one out double down the right field line. After Larry Jackson sacrificed him to third, Ron Santo reached first on an error by SS Derrell Griffith that allowed Blanchard to score. What looked like a routine grounder, bobbled in and out of his glove and hurrying the throw, pulled 1B Ron Fairly off the bag. The Cubs would return the gift in the bottom of the frame. With 2B Jim Gilliam at second and two outs, 1B Ernie Banks lost Tommy Davis's popup in the sun putting runners at the corners. Frank Howard then singled up the middle tying the score. The teams traded zeroes until the eighth when SP Larry Jackson helped his own cause leading off the inning with a single. After Santo struck out, 2B Bill Mazeroski singled putting Jackson in scoring position. Clemente then struck out but Orlando Cepeda, being the clutch hitter that he is, singled to left-center bringing Jackson home. In the bottom of the eighth, 2B Jim Gilliam led off with a double into the gap in left-center. After Ron Fairly flied out and Davis struck out, manager Leo Durocher, called on reliever Masanori Murakami to face the dangerous Frank Howard who hit a lazy pop fly to left. The ninth demonstrated Dodger manager, Walter Alston's, penchant for leaving his starters in too long. SS Ron Hansen drew a walk to start the inning. Banks beat out a dribbler down the first base side for a hit. Then, Blanchard was hit in the side by a 1-2 pitch to load the bases. OF Matty Alou was brought in to pinch hit and hit one to deep left field that looked like it might get out but was chased down by LF Frank Howard on the warning track. Hansen tagged up and scored. Reliever Wade Simmons, who was brought up for the injured Broderick Hunter, came on and mopped up for the victory. With the win, the Cubs took possession of first place and are quietly on a six game winning streak. Notes: SP Broderick Hunter has been placed on the 15 day disabled list with an oblique strain. With winning comes recognition as the Cubs went from 11th to 2nd in the power rankings. Last edited by SurfRat61; 07-10-2013 at 04:09 PM. Reason: sp |

I don't get it. How can the scheduling start at the same time yet the Reds have played 5 games more than me? I know it happens due to rainouts but I have yet to have one. Not that big a deal, I guess.

SS Ron Hansen has gone cold but I can't ignore the glove. I have seven guys who can tear the cover off the ball but how to best maximize my lineup is like playing chemistry set. Santo, Clemente, or Williams could rotate between 1,3, & 5 and not miss a beat. I love Clemente in the leadoff role but Mr. Durocher (AI) insists it should be Santo and at this point I'm hard pressed to argue. Not a bad dilemma to have. Anyway, here are the standings and the NL/AL leaderboards: |

				McLain Outduels Koufax

I beat him! I beat Sandy Koufax! And of course it came at a price as Clemente is now day to day for the next week with a mild oblique strain. Maybe Pittsburgh knew something here. Going to have a problem once Hunter comes off the DL. Who do I send down? All are pitching well.

Nothing to exciting here. Doubleheader today with the Big Red Machine and no "Arriba". Might put him in for the first game since he's only reduced 16% but worried about worsening his injury. Anyway, down at the beach ready to sail so here's the sports section.
