Question I'm an Excel newbie that needs some help

I've searched around this forum in hopes to find a DB that only has players of yesterday. But all I can find is DB's that also contain players of today . Oh, yes once I get this game all set up I'll be sure to schedule an inaugural draft.

Now to my question: what's the best way to locate all the players from the 1950's through the 1980's in the master or historical DB's?

Just thought of one more question: should I go with the reserve rosters for all teams or should I have at least 1 minor league affiliate?

Thanks in advance for any help.

In answer to your second question -- considering how big you are going to make your universe, the inaugural draft will probably be about 200 rounds long unless you use the reserve rosters.

Thanks!

I posted my questions over in the Rosters mod forum but I thought I would post them here to see if anyone here can help me.

Again, its very much appreciated in advance.
Thanks!

To sort a column in excel, click on the column header to highlight it, then select the "Data" tab and then sort as desired.

I think I have just one more question....for now anyway. I have all the players I want to import but how do I export the modified master.csv file? And how do I import it into the game? I tried saving my work as a .csv file and importing it but the import failed.

If you need a screenie of my saved master.csv file just let me know.

You're going to encounter limits in Excel if you try working with all the files from the historical database. For certain tables, there are more rows than Excel can render.

I can't really help you on your questions, though.

Thanks Charlie. To clarify, I downloaded Gambo/Spritz's DB for OOTP 14 from your site (OOTPMods.com). I then extracted the master.csv file from the dl into a custom file folder. Then I opened the master.csv file using Microsoft WordPerfect Office 12 > Quattro Pro and sorted the players by the years they played. Then I trimmed off the players I didn't want to use and re-sorted the players by their Lahman player ID's and then saved the file as a master.csv. Then I tried to import my file but the import fails. So what am I doing wrong?

I don't know. This is outside my experience. My only guess is that the database may require that the master.csv match the player IDs that appear in all the other tables. The master.csv is simply the master list of all players in the database. But there are a number of other tables in the database with their battings stats, pitching stats, fielding stats, etc.

I've never attempted something like this on a large scale, but maybe those same players need to be removed from the other tables as well.

But I honestly have no idea. Spritze or Gambo might be the best experts to consult on how they work with databases on a large scale and make sure they work with OOTP.

i would test 1 player in a copied version of the db
delete all his years in pitching, hitting, fielding but 1
change the year to a year he did not really play

see if the year, age and stats you want come through on the import
now you could do the same for all the players you want, picking any year as the base 1 year for that player, or maybe just change the key year you want for that players

start a historical for taht new devised year
all the players you have remoddled will come in

now take the ml quickstart, save it as a template, then call in the template- (or make this new game the template and call it into the qs) and voilla you have the retired players you want, the current players and all current minor leaguers

but check with 1 player first for it might do odd things changing dates in the db, before putting any more time into it

if

I'm a little confused on what it is you're trying to create.
Are your teams and structure already setup?
Are their rosters already filled or empty?
Do you need to add todays players and the previous years players as well or just the ones from previous years?
Are you trying to create an entirely new master.csv or just import players to your game?
I'm thinking you just want to add the players and the easiest way to do that is to open the master and do your sorting. Make sure all the players you want to keep have a bbref id in the bbrefid column (they should).
Delete all columns except the year and bbrefid columns.
Delete all rows you don't want. Save it as a .csv and rename the extension to .txt
Your txt file should look like this (bbrefid, year):
aardsda01,2009
aaronha01,1959
abreubo01,2000
adamsba01,1920
adamsmi02,2011
adamste01,2003
Copy the .txt file to your ootp stats folder or folder of your choice.
Now do a historical import and use the .txt file. That'll import all your players.
That's the easiest way to do it providing it's what you want to do.
If your version of excel can't handle all the rows in the master.csv your using, then get Apache Open Office. It's free, works perfectly, and will handle more than you'll ever need.

Hey Bigrod! Thanks for helping me out good friend. It's very much appreciated!

Okay, just in case anyone may ant a Quick Start of my game, here's what it consists of:
  • Fictional game with 40 of the MLB teams to ever exist
  • Real players who began their careers in 1930 all the way through 2013
  • Since this consists of real players, only fictional coaches and scouts can be used
  • Season begins in April of 2013
  • Minors league teams are used...but...only AAA, AA and A are used
  • Rosters in season will be 30 with a 45-Man roster. September roster expansion will be 45
  • I will include the correct number of college and high school feeder leagues
Now to answer your questions Bigrod (my answers are in bold):

Q. Are your teams and structure already setup?
A. Yes, already set up.

Q. Are their rosters already filled or empty?
A. Empty.
Q. Do you need to add todays players and the previous years players as well or just the ones from previous years?
A. As I described above, I would really like for this game to be a combination of today's players and previous years players.
Q. Are you trying to create an entirely new master.csv or just import players to your game?
A. Well, I'm thinking with having such a very large number of players to have in the inaugural draft pool that it would very likely be best if I created an entirely new master.csv file.

By the way, the program I'll be using to make the csv file will be Microsoft WordPerfect Office 12. It has an-add-on called Quattro Pro which functions just like Excel. Again, thanks for the help. I'll post back with the results.

Update....July 4, 2013

I have run into a snag. As I said, I'm using the Gambo/Spritz DB for OOTP 14 and I'm trying to include all of the Hall of Fame players. However, there seems to be a problem. In their master.csv file, they have several former MLB players incorrectly listed as HOF'ers. Players such as but not limited to Jesse Orosco, Jerry Reuss, Tim Raines, Rick Reuschel, Allie Reynolds, etc are NOT in the HOF. I thought this DB was supposed to be updated for OOTP 14? Or am I missing something?

What I will now have to do is go back and edit my DB I'm currently assembling. This is annoying to say the least.

Edit: There's actually numerous incorrectly listed players as HOF'ers. Gambo, please correct this. Thanks!
